Gary: Hello, Monarch fans, and welcome to the Hudson Homer's podcast to steal

2

:

a line from my friend, Aaron Zielinski,

the best and only ODU baseball podcast.

3

:

I am joined as always by CB.

4

:

CB, pretty awesome week here.

5

:

How are you

6

:

CB: Pretty great week, man.

7

:

I mean, it went 3 1.

8

:

Frankly, I'll be honest, uh, a little

disappointed we didn't win on Friday

9

:

also, but that was just me being greedy.

10

:

Like, uh, I think you said on

Twitter, uh, it's not easy to win a

11

:

road series in the Sun Belt, so we,

we gotta be happy with, uh, taking

12

:

the series win there at Marshall.

13

:

And of course, Tuesday at Harbor

Park, Uh beating uva 7 to 4 score

14

:

wasn't anywhere near that close.

15

:

They got a few cheap runs at the

end That was just a phenomenal night

16

:

Gary: Yeah, that was a fun one.

17

:

And we're going to talk more

about that here in a little bit.

18

:

We've got a jam packed episode for you.

19

:

Kyle Edwards is going to

be hopping on with us.

20

:

To talk about the games this past week

and how he got his nickname Batman.

21

:

Uh, then we're also gonna have Mike McCue,

who played for ODU, uh, from 85 to 87.

22

:

They're having a ODU Baseball

Alumni Weekend out at the Buds.

23

:

Some good opportunities to meet some

alum that are gonna be out there.

24

:

We've got all that for you.

25

:

But I think first we gotta do dollars

for dingers and bucks for bags.

26

:

We hit a few this week, not a ton, but

we are up to 35 for dollars for dingers.

27

:

And on the bucks for bag side, we are at

63 stolen bases, 63 for 80 on the season.

28

:

So if you haven't started already, start

putting your dollar bills in a jar or a

29

:

savings account or something, because, uh,

boys are gonna help drive some donations

30

:

to help the program moving forward with,

dollars for dingers and bucks for bags.

31

:

CB: Yeah, because we got what is

it four more weekends, uh, and then

32

:

conference play So they can they can add

a little damage here for in the year.

33

:

They can they can up those numbers We're

we're get respectable slowly inching

34

:

numbers, you know, again, we're not trying

to do too much of anything, but they're

35

:

uh, They're doing all right on both Yeah,

36

:

Gary: It's crazy to think of where

we're at in the season and how many

37

:

games that we have already played.

38

:

And yeah, I mean, we got two

home Sunbelt series left.

39

:

That's it.

40

:

We've got ULM this weekend and

then App State in two weeks.

41

:

And that's it for the bud.

42

:

CB: there are only seven games left at

what is currently constructed as the bud.

43

:

Yeah, that is a kind of crazy.

44

:

Gary: It's a little scary when

you think about how quickly time

45

:

flies, but let's talk about the

game over at Harbor park on Tuesday.

46

:

You, you hit the nail on the head.

47

:

It was not even as close

as the score indicated.

48

:

CB: Yeah, it was 7 to 1.

49

:

I mean, they, they came out three runs of

the first inning, got another run of the

50

:

second, and, and frankly, UVA really never

looked like they had a shot in the game.

51

:

Um, yeah, they got a few

runs there in the ninth.

52

:

Honestly, you know Lincoln Ransom had

pitched a really great eighth inning.

53

:

I didn't really agree with him

coming back out for the ninth inning.

54

:

Uh, I think it should have been

Vincent Becherra the whole time.

55

:

Uh, if nothing else just because

you know Bash, he's a senior.

56

:

He's from Norfolk.

57

:

He's one of the few kids

who's actually from Norfolk.

58

:

For him playing at Heartland

Park was a big deal.

59

:

I know he went over and thanked

Finney at the end of the game for

60

:

letting him get the pitch in the game.

61

:

And so he having Bash come out and be

able to close out the end of the game.

62

:

Was a big and yeah, they scored a few

runs, but it really and you know, they

63

:

had big hitters up and a chance I mean,

I think it was uh, ethan anderson came

64

:

up with a chance to tie the game I

still really wasn't worried about it.

65

:

Uh, despite knowing ethan

anderson from cox high school is

66

:

a phenomenal baseball player He's

been killing it for uva all year.

67

:

I wasn't worried about it.

68

:

Uh, so What a night what

a wonderful fun night

69

:

Gary: It was a great night and yeah,

when bash came in, I figured, all

70

:

right, UVA is probably going to put

up a couple of runs, but I think

71

:

bash is going to get us out of it.

72

:

Um, I didn't feel as confident early

on because I've seen this UVA team put

73

:

up a boatload of runs and we've talked

about it here about how they're probably

74

:

the best, if not the top three, uh,

best offenses in the country, but we

75

:

just kept kind of stacking some runs.

76

:

You get three in the first.

77

:

Come back, get another one there in the

second, adding a couple more in the fourth

78

:

and the fifth, and, you know, being up

seven to one, they're going into the ninth

79

:

was definitely a little bit of a relief.

80

:

And I imagine for the guys on this team

to come out and score early, probably

81

:

gave them a boatload of confidence.

82

:

The rest of the game that

they were going to win,

83

:

CB: Yeah, maybe it's because I was

there and I was like in the dugout I

84

:

mean, so when I take pictures usually

You You know, I'm right, I'm kind of

85

:

in our bullpen if I'm on the ODU side.

86

:

And so I'm there, I'm with the players,

but it's not quite the same as this time.

87

:

I'm actually, I was in the dugout.

88

:

Like I was standing on

the steps in the dugout.

89

:

It's, it is a very different, you know,

you're high fiving guys and they're

90

:

coming in and out of the dugout, you

know, so it's a very different feel.

91

:

And I.

92

:

I was never worried.

93

:

Uh, Brandon Pond started the game

two and two thirds, gave up one run.

94

:

Uh, he was exactly what we

needed to start the game.

95

:

Steven Trone came in.

96

:

He's been killing it lately.

97

:

Our side arming, uh, sophomore righty, two

in the third scoreless looked outstanding.

98

:

And then Nick Slopezio, our

freshmen, two scoreless innings, no

99

:

walks, two hits, four strikeouts.

100

:

I mean, those three guys just, you know,

Set the tone and just dominated the first,

101

:

uh, what, seven innings of the game.

102

:

Gary: Nick had some

nasty stuff on the mound.

103

:

I mean, striking out four of

the eight batters that he faced.

104

:

Uh, I mean, he had some pretty filthy

stuff and that's the kind of things

105

:

you want to look for in these midweeks

that these guys who are maybe trying to

106

:

crack into the weekend, they're setting

themselves up for next year, just a great

107

:

performance from the pitching staff in

general against one of the best offenses

108

:

in the country, being able to shut them

down like that was really impressive.

109

:

And the offense had their back this time.

110

:

CB: Yeah.

111

:

And it was great.

112

:

And, and of course, like you said, the

offense, we got off to a great start.

113

:

Um, you know, we, we had three

runs there in the first inning.

114

:

Uh, Kyle drove Edwards drove in a run.

115

:

Uh, who else drove in the first

candle of already drove in a run.

116

:

Tyser had a couple of great hits and,

and, you know, he, He looked really good.

117

:

He looked locked in, just

hitting nice hard line drives.

118

:

He even stole a base, uh, which was

incredibly fun to see, uh, Tyser.

119

:

They were in that same kind of attempting

to, um, steal second game to make the

120

:

throw so our guy could steal home.

121

:

They didn't bite.

122

:

So Tyser just took second and got

to do the kind of, uh, rev up,

123

:

vroom, vroom celebration they do

on second base, which is very fun.

124

:

Um, you know, it was

just a really good night.

125

:

I mean, it was, our guys were on the ball.

126

:

The energy was through the roof.

127

:

Um, and a bunch of UVA fans left

sad, which is just very enjoyable.

128

:

Gary: I think the crowd was over 4, 000.

129

:

I mean, I imagine the energy in there

was, was just electric for those guys.

130

:

And hopefully that's sign of things to

come when the new bud is built and we

131

:

start getting bigger crowds at the bud

on a regular basis, but Tyser getting

132

:

a stolen base was not something I

had on my bingo card for Tuesday, but

133

:

we'll gladly take it and put another

dollar in the jar for bucks for

134

:

CB: The best part wasn't the stolen base.

135

:

It was that he went from second to home

on not a like easy play I don't think

136

:

there was a throw ended up but he He

went on the next the next batter got a

137

:

hit and I think it was maybe maverick

It was either maverick or evan holman.

138

:

I'm not i'm off the top of my head

right now, but um, Tyser went second

139

:

to home and looked great doing it.

140

:

So, I mean, typically when he runs, he

looks like he's in pain the whole time,

141

:

which I, I really relate to as I am

in pain the whole time whenever I run.

142

:

Uh, and Jake's a much bigger,

uh, stronger man than I am.

143

:

So, but it was, you know, it was

a great night and it was very fun.

144

:

I saw, I probably didn't see everybody.

145

:

I saw a ton of our alumni.

146

:

Um, a lot of our recent guys for the last

10 years or so were out there watching

147

:

the game, uh, So I saw some of their

families and so it was just that was

148

:

just overall just uh, it's it's always

great When we play at harvard park,

149

:

it's a shame that it's been so long and

hopefully we don't have any issues to

150

:

prevent this from happening Uh every

year because it's just such a fun time.

151

:

It's a great venue

152

:

Gary: It is and with their ranking,

it helps boost our RPI a little bit.

153

:

It helps boost the conference RPI,

which is already in pretty great shape.

154

:

But last I checked, we were

the 3rd best conference by RPI.

155

:

And I want to say, if they were picking

the team of 64, just based on the RPI

156

:

ranking, there would be 9 teams from

the Sunbelt to make the tournament,

157

:

which is just freaking ridiculous.

158

:

Uh, so just another boost for the team

when you talk about anything that could

159

:

happen in the postseason and then also

boosting up your conference as well.

160

:

Uh, cause that was a good day

in general for the Sunbelt.

161

:

Coastal went to UNC and beat them and did

their really long home winning streak.

162

:

So great day for ODU, great

day for the conference and.

163

:

What we all hope is going to be a

lot of Sunbelt teams getting in that

164

:

post season tournament this year.

165

:

CB: You know and that really speaks to

what we've been kind of saying about

166

:

this odu team is they are a very good

team And that when they have a day like

167

:

this so they go out and hit like they can

hit It And the pitching is doing exactly

168

:

what it's been doing all year being

outstanding They can beat anybody here.

169

:

They are beating the number

10 team in the country.

170

:

Probably the best offense in the country

Um, and then went in had a good weekend

171

:

finally got a road series win against

marshall We have some not super strong

172

:

teams I mean again, i'll say every

weekend in the conference is is a tough

173

:

weekend But the teams they're playing the

last four they've got three of them are

174

:

below So Oh, do you and the standings,

they could really get on a little run

175

:

here, have some great momentum going

into the conference tournament, you'd

176

:

be going to conference tournament, if

you make a lot of noise, as you said,

177

:

the Sunbelt is a great conference.

178

:

You end up being, if you're the

runner up and the Sunbelt tournament,

179

:

you're probably going to go.

180

:

To the NCAA tournament.

181

:

So they, the season is really still

in ODU's hands, even though as we

182

:

sit here, what is it, 21 and 18,

nine and nine in conference, you see

183

:

that not super impressive, right?

184

:

But again, the context of what those

numbers are and the fact that they're

185

:

in a great spot to really do some damage

here in the last month of the season.

186

:

Gary: Absolutely.

187

:

And I felt going into this Marshall series

that this was a series that we had to win.

188

:

If we wanted to be in any kind of

serious contention for the Sunbelt

189

:

tournament in terms of seeding.

190

:

Uh, cause I felt like this was a team

that on paper, we should go beat.

191

:

They had been really

tough to beat at home.

192

:

This is the first time they've lost

a series at home in the new ballpark.

193

:

And.

194

:

Didn't quite get off to the best start,

losing 4 2 in that Friday opener.

195

:

But there's a lot more to that story

than the live stats and very fun

196

:

radio broadcasts we all got to listen

197

:

CB: Yeah, man, I, you know,

we all gotta start somewhere.

198

:

I guess that's what I'm

gonna say about that.

199

:

You know, if you listen to the Marshall

stream this weekend, um, I guess

200

:

apparently much like ODU, they can

only, uh, do this video streaming of

201

:

one, uh, Game at a time they chose to

go with softball because softball is

202

:

more competitive for them uh, I guess

there's some karma in the fact that

203

:

uh, Costa carolina went up and beat

the softball in their weekend series,

204

:

uh, but the the stream was pretty

terrible I mean, I think the uh, it was

205

:

a case of you know Nothing wrong again.

206

:

You we all have to break in somewhere

I would have rather had maybe someone

207

:

with some experience and then have

the person with less experience

208

:

kind of be there as, as a extra.

209

:

Uh, it just sounded like, like I said,

I said one day, it sounded like they

210

:

went to the frat house and said, who's

sober enough to drive and somebody

211

:

mumbled me and they just grabbed him

and put them in a booth, uh, the guy.

212

:

It was, I think it was a different

guy doing the, the color commentary or

213

:

whatever, being the second guy in the

booth in the game on Sunday, I don't

214

:

think he'd ever seen a baseball game

before, if I'm being honest, he kept

215

:

saying points, he kept saying that

Marshall had a three point deficit.

216

:

And I was like, I don't, are they going to

do a, are you going to shoot from the arc?

217

:

What are we doing here?

218

:

Uh, so that that was a I mean at one

point I was like Is this actually better

219

:

than just looking at the live stats?

220

:

I'm not i'm not positive that it is.

221

:

Gary: It was somewhat helpful on

Saturday, except they missed an

222

:

entire bat in the ninth inning.

223

:

And then Sunday they went to

commercial and then just didn't

224

:

come back to the game for at least

ten minutes and I turned it off.

225

:

I will say they have some

incredibly nostalgic radio ads.

226

:

Cause I'm guessing it's a local station.

227

:

They probably don't have a lot of ads,

but it was all like old PSAs and like

228

:

funny kind of hacky radio bit stuff.

229

:

That was pretty entertaining, but

it, it looped through about four

230

:

times before I realized they're

never going to go back to the game.

231

:

So I just kind of stopped listening, but.

232

:

There's a, there, there's a reason

that Pierce didn't put that radio

233

:

link in the, uh, pregame social media.

234

:

CB: I mean they're you know, and I can't

even blame them for you know, if you just

235

:

have technical difficulties again I'm

assuming whoever is doing the producing

236

:

is probably a student also and it's it

was very clearly a student radio um,

237

:

and yeah, I did have the wonderful like

terrible acting and there there was a

238

:

uh, a nostalgia field to it, but I mean

I Appreciate it I hope they get better.

239

:

I hope they get the practice helps

because boy it was it was hard

240

:

to listen to I'm glad we won.

241

:

If we, if we, if all that was happening

and we were losing the games, I

242

:

really would have had a bad weekend.

243

:

Gary: That would have made it tougher,

but we did drop the game on Friday.

244

:

But what you probably didn't know

from the radio or the live stats is

245

:

the guys were hitting the ball hard.

246

:

Anyone I talked to who was at the game,

even some of the players will tell you

247

:

they were lighting the ball up with over

a hundred mile an hour exit velocities.

248

:

They were just hitting it.

249

:

Right at people.

250

:

And then on the other side, Marshall

really wasn't getting a lot of great

251

:

contact, but they were finding holes.

252

:

They were dropping the ball in and.

253

:

At the end of the day, a loss is a loss.

254

:

They lost that game.

255

:

But after hearing that from some of

the parents that this wasn't just

256

:

completely inept lineup that we have

seen sometimes from ODU this season,

257

:

especially in road series, I felt

much better going into Saturday.

258

:

But, uh, you know, I thought we

were in great shape on Friday, TJ

259

:

Aiken, leading that thing off with

a solo home run was pretty nice.

260

:

CB: Yeah.

261

:

TJ, you know, he's a big kid.

262

:

Um, he's, he's kind of played with kind

of that athletic fast guy, you know,

263

:

bunt singles and things, but he, he's

every bit of six, two, six, three.

264

:

He's, he's a, when he puts some.

265

:

When we get him here and get

some muscle on him throughout the

266

:

year He's gonna be a guy that's

gonna hit some home runs for us.

267

:

It was nice to see him Uh a little

surprising, but again, once you

268

:

really take a second think about who

he actually is Yeah, it was great to

269

:

see him hit a home run good for him.

270

:

Gary: Kenny LaVarie drove in

the other run with the solo shot

271

:

himself there in the seventh.

272

:

Uh, just couldn't really

string enough hits together and

273

:

find those gaps in that game.

274

:

But I don't think that our

pitching was bad at all.

275

:

I mean, Jay Kass, he got up two

runs and three in the third inning,

276

:

four hits, had three strikeouts.

277

:

Callan Davis came in, uh, he did give up

a run, uh, but he had a, had a strikeout.

278

:

And then John Holobetz.

279

:

four and a third of show of no earned

runs, four hits, four strikeouts.

280

:

Uh, you know, from, from all accounts,

he threw the ball really well.

281

:

Uh, just one of those games where

baseball kind of sucks sometimes

282

:

where the bleeders become hits and

the things that you smoke are outs.

283

:

CB: Yeah, and again john halibut's, uh

friend of the podcast fan of the podcast.

284

:

Love that guy Uh another fantastic relief

outing for him these these long friday

285

:

relief outings Just looking great Uh,

you know, they said four and a third,

286

:

four strikeouts, the one unearned and

Jay Cassidy, you know, that's, I mean,

287

:

really two runs and three and a third,

that's what you want out of them.

288

:

I, again, the pitching was good.

289

:

If you give up four runs at a college

baseball game, that's going to

290

:

give you a pretty good shot to win.

291

:

So it just, as you said,

apparently unfortunate luck on

292

:

the hitting side that night.

293

:

Gary: And I will give some

credit to Marshall's pitching.

294

:

I thought that they threw

the ball pretty well.

295

:

Drew Harlow is their starter.

296

:

He went seven, gave up

two runs on four hits.

297

:

No walks, nine strikeouts.

298

:

Uh, Nicholas Weyrich came in, in relief,

got the last two innings, had two

299

:

strikeouts, didn't give up a hit or a run.

300

:

I think the, the big thing I've

noticed from this game, Marshall

301

:

Pitching had 11 strikeouts.

302

:

They only had one walk

and they hit two batters.

303

:

Uh, so they were throwing the ball in the

zone and Harlow was just pumping strikes,

304

:

uh, through seven innings, only through

102 pitches through a boatload of strikes

305

:

in the zone to go challenge hitter.

306

:

So.

307

:

They did a good job on their end and

that's what Marshall had done recently.

308

:

I mean, they limited, uh, a really good

Louisiana offense, uh, to very few runs.

309

:

They just couldn't score.

310

:

Uh, so we got through two of their

three best pitchers on Friday and

311

:

ended up coming out with a loss, but.

312

:

The fortunes changed the rest of

the weekend and I have to give

313

:

some credit here to Ginger Holman.

314

:

Uh, and then also Angie Holobets,

who forwarded the picture.

315

:

Um, I guess Ginger has been sacrificing

rubber chickens after we lose games

316

:

so that we'll win the next one.

317

:

Uh, and before the game on Saturday,

she put one under a lawnmower going

318

:

into Saturday and that, uh, apparently

propelled us to some, some voodoo victory.

319

:

CB: I mean, if she's doing after losses,

we haven't had many losing streaks.

320

:

We haven't lost two in a row often.

321

:

So it's working.

322

:

Keep, keep it going.

323

:

Gary: I ended up seeing

some of the older pictures.

324

:

There was one that was hooked up

to, it looked like, like medical

325

:

leads for like an AED or something.

326

:

And another one, there was a rubber

chicken in a pot of boiling water.

327

:

So there's some, uh, some serious

superstition on the parent group

328

:

CB: Hey, whatever works.

329

:

Cause like I said, we got the

Saturday win three to one.

330

:

Um, again, you know, didn't score

enough runs, but scored more than them.

331

:

You know, I, I would argue three runs

is not going to win you most games,

332

:

but as we saw this weekend or heard

this weekend, or maybe didn't hear this

333

:

weekend, you know, I think Marshall isn't.

334

:

Their pitcher did great though.

335

:

Bryce Blevins, he pitched eight

innings, gave up three runs.

336

:

Only one of them was earned.

337

:

He threw 120 pitches.

338

:

That's, that's one thing Marshall has

kind of consistently done year after year.

339

:

They, they throw their starters a lot.

340

:

Um, which for us as a team has not really

been the case, but he pitched great.

341

:

Just, you know, was on

the wrong end of things.

342

:

Cause Blake Morgan.

343

:

Great start.

344

:

Four innings.

345

:

Uh, only one run a walk for strikeouts.

346

:

Uh, Ben Moore was outstanding

in the middle of the game.

347

:

Uh, three innings, two

strikeouts, only one hit.

348

:

And then Jacob Gomez, he only

needed 16 pitches to pitch two

349

:

scoreless innings and two strikeouts.

350

:

I mean, that was, frankly,

usually he throws more pitches,

351

:

he usually gets more strikeouts.

352

:

I mean, that was just, our pitching

looked, I mean, again, I didn't get to

353

:

see it, but our pitching, uh, was dominant

on Saturday, which was great to see.

354

:

Gary: I thought the pitching

was great all weekend.

355

:

Definitely on Saturday.

356

:

But we were kind of in a funk early.

357

:

We really weren't hitting the ball well.

358

:

Blevins, for Marshall was

really, I mean, he was dominating.

359

:

It was a similar approach that we

saw on Friday where he was pumping

360

:

a lot of strikes into the zone.

361

:

And kind of the, the strategy on him

for a lot of teams is try to run up the

362

:

pitch count and get him out of the game.

363

:

'cause he is one of their best pitchers.

364

:

I think by statistically he was the best.

365

:

Uh, but we, we didn't look real great

at the plate in, in terms of what we

366

:

were seeing and what we were hearing.

367

:

Uh, but Jake Tyser coming through

and breaking the seal with a solo

368

:

home run to right to get us going,

end up getting two more runs in

369

:

that inning because we got guys on

base, because we increased pressure.

370

:

Uh, I think the final scoring on those

last two runs was a passed ball and

371

:

then a throwing error on the catcher.

372

:

So both of the runs were unearned,

but we got runners home from

373

:

second and third on one pass ball.

374

:

And that was it for the offense.

375

:

But that was enough with the

way that our pitching was

376

:

CB: Yeah, and you know, that's a case

of, you know, Marshall, unfortunately

377

:

at this point, I mean, what are they?

378

:

They're 13 and 26.

379

:

They're 6 and 12 in the Sun Belt.

380

:

You know, they're,

they're not a good team.

381

:

I mean, let's just be real.

382

:

They played enough season.

383

:

I think you, it's fair to say that.

384

:

Um, and the sign of not a good team is

you kicked the ball around on defense.

385

:

They had four errors.

386

:

The pass ball didn't count

as part of your errors.

387

:

So it's, it's just a case of, You

know, when you're not good, those

388

:

are the kind of mistakes you make.

389

:

Now, hopefully, with the new stadium

and being in the Sun Belt, a very

390

:

competitive, uh, conference, hopefully

they can start recruiting better and

391

:

getting some better teams in there

and becoming much more competitive in

392

:

the Sun Belt in the next few years.

393

:

I think that's kind of been what's holding

them back for the last several years.

394

:

So, hopefully, in the future, we'll see

a lot more competitive martial teams.

395

:

Gary: Absolutely.

396

:

Well, the finale, the rubber match

on Sunday was definitely not a

397

:

competitive game, but for all the

right reasons, if you're an ODU fan.

398

:

CB: we, we run ruled them as I like

to say, even though, um, it was

399

:

a run rule in, in nine innings.

400

:

Uh, but yeah, I mean, that was one,

uh, again, if you're in the Marshall

401

:

team, I'm sure they've just had a lot

of this this year, even though they

402

:

said the Louisiana series, they held

them close, even though they got swept,

403

:

but this was just a case of, uh, ODU

just dominated them like right from the

404

:

jump, they just scored a ton of runs,

didn't stop scoring, just kept it going

405

:

Gary: Yeah, put up those 12 runs and

somehow did not manage to hit a home run.

406

:

So I think that's the offense we've

kind of been waiting for of truly small

407

:

ball, singles, doubles, getting guys

over sack flies a whole lot of that.

408

:

Uh, you know, if you're going

through our, our lineup here, Bryce

409

:

Jones actually started in left

TJ Aiken was the D H on Sunday.

410

:

Bryce goes two for four

drives in three runs.

411

:

Uh, Evan Holman went two for

three at the dish and had a walk.

412

:

Uh, and then Kyle Edwards, who is going

to be on here in just a little bit, went

413

:

two for four and drove in five runs.

414

:

Uh, so really just up and down.

415

:

The lineup on Sunday, you have production.

416

:

I think everyone had at least a

hit or an RBI who came in the game.

417

:

And that is what you want to see when

you're trying to play this small ball type

418

:

of offense is production one through nine.

419

:

And we got it Sunday.

420

:

CB: and again, Marshall, you know, making.

421

:

Mistakes, you know, we we scored 12 runs

on 10 hits They marshal walked eight guys.

422

:

They hit five guys They didn't actually

make any errors, but they just put so

423

:

many guys on base That at a certain

point you you just can't stop guys from

424

:

scoring Um the number of times I mean,

oh do you I mean we're the left on base

425

:

We had we had 10 guys left on base.

426

:

So I mean there were even more chances

to score Uh, so it was just a case

427

:

of, like I said, I mean, I love seeing

Bryce Jones come out, have a great game.

428

:

Uh, it's been very nice to see,

again, a kid I've been watching since

429

:

he was probably 15 or 16 years old.

430

:

Um, and he's a guy, you know, we

don't think about him necessarily

431

:

being a veteran on this team, but he

is, it is his third year on the team.

432

:

He was a, he was a red shirt and then I

saw as last year as a, as a red shirts

433

:

freshman, didn't play much, didn't get

to play much into this year, but he's.

434

:

He's kind of showing himself as someone

who has been around is a little more

435

:

mature and getting those chances.

436

:

Uh, it's great to see and Evan Holman.

437

:

He's we've talked about his

defense over and over again.

438

:

Evan is phenomenal.

439

:

He threw a guy out in the uva game.

440

:

Um, he's always great behind the dish

and he's such a Good sneaky hitter.

441

:

I mean again two for three in this game

of the walk just a great offensive day

442

:

Gary: We've talked about a lot like

left field had kind of been up for

443

:

grabs, left field had been up for grabs.

444

:

Uh, we kind of threw a new

wrinkle into the mix this weekend

445

:

with Alex Boucher not playing.

446

:

Uh, he came up with a, what

I think is a hamstring injury

447

:

in the final game against JMU.

448

:

Did not play against UVA,

did not play in this series.

449

:

So, Jake Tyser got, you know,

inserted there at first base.

450

:

Uh, I think he had a little bit of a rough

go of it on Friday, but settled in nicely.

451

:

For Saturday and Sunday, but that

allowed Coach Fenwood to keep TJ

452

:

Aiken's bat in the lineup while kind

of having a little bit of a defensive

453

:

upgrade by putting Bryce Jones in left.

454

:

And then everything pays off by

both guys hitting, both guys having

455

:

graded bats and just adding some

more depth to this lineup despite

456

:

missing one of your better hitters.

457

:

Alex Boucher.

458

:

CB: that should be a thing that these

guys should really take out of this

459

:

weekend and feel great about The fact

that they were able to beat uva to win

460

:

a conference series on the road Without

one of their best hitters in the lineup

461

:

I mean that that's a big accomplishment

because if you can hit and compete and do

462

:

this well And then also, again, I don't

know if it'll happen tomorrow against

463

:

BCU, if it'll happen later against ULM,

or if it's going to be another week, you

464

:

know, hamstring injuries are, are tricky.

465

:

Who knows exactly when Alex is going

to come back, but if you can go out and

466

:

compete this well without one of your

best players, that says a lot about

467

:

the, you know, the heart these guys are

showing, which is what you like, the

468

:

grit to go out and compete that way.

469

:

Gary: Absolutely.

470

:

And want to take a look at

the Sunbelt standings here.

471

:

Uh, didn't get a ton of separation this

week with the series that were going on.

472

:

Louisiana, uh, did lose their

series at coastal Carolinas.

473

:

They're 15 and three in conference.

474

:

Now, uh, you got coastal Troy

and Southern miss and a three way

475

:

tie for second at 11 and seven.

476

:

Uh, JMU, Georgia state at 10 and eight.

477

:

And we're with Georgia

Southern at nine and nine.

478

:

Uh, unfortunately we had.

479

:

The ugliest thing that can happen

in a college baseball season,

480

:

App state in Arkansas state tied.

481

:

So you have this ugly eight, nine, and one

for app state right behind us, which is

482

:

going to make it a whole lot of fun for

tiebreakers, uh, going down the stretch,

483

:

but we are two games out of the two seed.

484

:

Uh, and that would be tied for the

number one seed in the east with coastal.

485

:

So I know they have a tiebreaker on us,

but things didn't really shake out as

486

:

much as I think some people were hoping.

487

:

Got a little separation, but not a ton.

488

:

CB: Yeah, I don't think it's going

to, I think you're going to have to

489

:

wait until maybe the last weekend of

the year to see too much separation.

490

:

Cause I mean, it's like,

oh, do you even go.

491

:

Two in one.

492

:

I mean, okay, then you're

right at nine and nine.

493

:

Um, so they're gonna

have to sweep App State.

494

:

That's what I'm getting out of

that, just to keep that ugly, weird

495

:

tie from being, because Arkansas

State, they're not coming back.

496

:

I know if they win the last 12

of the season, I'd be shocked.

497

:

Uh, they're at the bottom.

498

:

Gary: They're going to have a

tough ride down there at four 13

499

:

and one, ugh, saying one after it.

500

:

CB: Do we know how that happened?

501

:

The tie?

502

:

Would they just run out

of time on Sunday or what?

503

:

Gary: I don't know.

504

:

I would, I would guess it's

either time or weather.

505

:

I'm trying to think.

506

:

I think the weather was clear in

both of those locations on Sunday.

507

:

So it might have been a

getaway day timing issue.

508

:

But either way, uh, ties

don't belong in baseball.

509

:

I hate seeing them in the standings.

510

:

I hated it when I was doing SID work and

had to try to figure out tie breakers

511

:

with a, uh, a one in the tie column.

512

:

Uh, so it's not fun, but ODU still has

everything right there in front of them

513

:

to go up and get one of those top seeds.

514

:

And I think their schedule moving forward

can kind of create some opportunities.

515

:

CB: And you know, we talked about, you

know, I think the first podcast of our

516

:

season, you know, before we hit this,

uh, before we even played the games,

517

:

we, we talked about this kind of buzzsaw

here in the middle of the season, right?

518

:

You know, we were going to play, I've

got my schedule coming up, making sure

519

:

I have all the, all the names correct.

520

:

But we played, uh, at UVA,

played three games at Coastal.

521

:

We played at ECU.

522

:

Had JMU to home for three games

and then played UVA at Harbor Park.

523

:

So that was a nine game stretch.

524

:

Uh, if I told you before the year that ODU

went four and five and a nine game stretch

525

:

playing three top 25 teams, will we feel

okay about that prior to the season?

526

:

Gary: know that I would, cause I was

thinking three and six is probably

527

:

the most likely outcome, but.

528

:

uh, they've exceeded my

expectations through that tough

529

:

CB: Yeah.

530

:

I mean, I, I feel, again, I think walking

away, I think they could have won more.

531

:

I think we could have beat

UVA in both those games.

532

:

We lost UVA.

533

:

I think we could have beat ECU.

534

:

Yeah.

535

:

I think we could have won

another one against Coastal.

536

:

So I I think we could have won more

but I think walking out of there Facing

537

:

three top 25 teams in a nine game stretch

Winning a conference series and going

538

:

four and five overall Not too bad.

539

:

And again, I think it speaks to As we

now go to where there's four conference

540

:

weekends left, three of those teams

are below ODU in the standings.

541

:

I think this team is poised to maybe

go out and really dominate their

542

:

competition, uh, and get themselves

in a much better spot going into the

543

:

tournament, make themselves a much better

hot street going into the tournament

544

:

and feeling good heading down there.

545

:

Gary: Yep.

546

:

Definitely a lot of opportunity.

547

:

Well, we're going to take a quick break.

548

:

When we come back, we'll have

our interview with Kyle Edwards,

549

:

and then quickly followed by our

conversation with Mike McHugh

550

:

about ODU baseball alumni weekend.

551

:

So stay tuned and thank

you so much for listening.

552

:

Hello, Monarch fans, and welcome

back to the Hudson Homer's podcast.

553

:

Uh, we have a special guest for you today.

554

:

We are joined by ODU baseball starting

shortstop, Kyle Edwards, Kyle.

555

:

Thanks so much for

hopping on with us today.

556

:

Kyle: Yeah, thank you.

557

:

I appreciate it.

558

:

Gary: I think first and foremost,

like how is the team feeling coming

559

:

off of another series when this time

on the road and also knocking off a

560

:

pretty good and ranked UVA team, I

561

:

Kyle: Uh, we're feeling pretty good.

562

:

Um, the game on, um, I think

it was, no, Tuesday, right?

563

:

Gary: think it was two great.

564

:

Kyle: Um, that was, it was fun.

565

:

I mean, we had 4, 000 fans out there and,

you know, we don't, we don't get that

566

:

type atmosphere at the bud, we get, you

know, good, a good amount, like for, for

567

:

us, but 4, 000 was, was pretty big and it

was just a fun environment to be around

568

:

playing a good opponent and, uh, we just

had a lot of energy and fed off the fans.

569

:

And, uh, we came out swinging

and we're ready to go.

570

:

And then, uh, we got on the bus and.

571

:

Went to, uh, West Virginia, play

Marshall and, uh, it was, it was an

572

:

all around good weekend, you know,

Friday, uh, we hit, we hit some balls

573

:

pretty hard, you know, all around the

yard and, uh, we only got two runs.

574

:

We played some good baseball.

575

:

Um, they had their best guy and

one of their best guys out there.

576

:

And, uh, You know, we had him around

and it just didn't go our way that day.

577

:

But then we came back on Saturday and,

uh, that guy had a pretty good ERA

578

:

and he'd been pitching well all year.

579

:

And we just kind of found some ways to,

to get some runs in and, uh, maneuver

580

:

that went around and that was a good

day at the energy was high and, uh,

581

:

Sunday was just an all around great day.

582

:

Like from the jump, we started off

with a bunch of walks, getting the

583

:

bases loaded in the first inning,

scoring two runs, um, and then we

584

:

just kept them coming from there and

it was just an all around great day.

585

:

It was somewhere on a good day

for the team and good weekend.

586

:

Gary: How good did it feel in that first

inning against UVA to finally break

587

:

through and score on those guys after

two shutouts going up to Charlottesville?

588

:

Kyle: It felt pretty good.

589

:

Uh, they have a good pitching staff.

590

:

So, um, just getting to them, I mean,

third time's the charm and, uh, we've

591

:

played those guys since I've been here

pretty well, uh, you know, they got

592

:

the best of us when we went up there

twice, but that's how it is sometimes.

593

:

And just to get that win, especially

with them being number 10 and just

594

:

to break through was just fun and

just watching all the energy, all the

595

:

pitchers and all the headers, just,

Kind of mess together and being in a fun

596

:

environment was, was really, really cool.

597

:

CB: Yeah, how big of a deal was that?

598

:

I know, I think you told me you had

played at Harbor Park, uh, in high school.

599

:

But, you know, obviously since you've been

at ODU, it's been five years since they

600

:

were able to play a game of Harbor Park.

601

:

Nobody on the team was able to play.

602

:

I think John Keane, who is now

one of our coaches, he was on the

603

:

team last time we played there.

604

:

Even the coaching staff, only Chris

Finwood and Mike Marin are still there.

605

:

So it's the thing that really

nobody had experienced.

606

:

So how was that getting to

play there in a college game?

607

:

Like you said, 4, 000

people, that atmosphere.

608

:

What was that really like?

609

:

Kyle: Uh, it's a lot

different than high school.

610

:

Cause high school, you know,

there's not many fans out there.

611

:

There's, you know, your parents and then

some, some spectators that just come and

612

:

watch and in a high school, like it feels

like you can't get out of the infield.

613

:

Um, but the college atmosphere

is, is pretty crazy.

614

:

And, uh, just a bunch of good ball

players being on the field at once.

615

:

And it just felt like, you know,

it felt like a day you were

616

:

just like in the big leagues.

617

:

It's a big park, um, got a big scoreboard,

got 4, 000 fans filling the stadium

618

:

a little bit and it, it was just fun.

619

:

There's not really much else to say

other than it was just a great day.

620

:

Great place to play

that day and that night.

621

:

And it, you know, turned out in our favor.

622

:

CB: Yeah, my favorite part was

I think about the fifth inning.

623

:

I turned to um, whoever was

standing around me and I said,

624

:

you know, the best part is all

these UVA fans are about to leave.

625

:

Uh, and then you look up in the seventh

inning and there were like three orange

626

:

shirts left in the whole stadium.

627

:

Like, it was great.

628

:

Kyle: Yeah.

629

:

That was, that was, that's pretty cool.

630

:

Always when you get the other

team's fans to leave early.

631

:

CB: You got to play against

Ethan Anderson, who you

632

:

were teammates with at Cox.

633

:

You guys won a state

championship together at Cox.

634

:

Is that cool getting to get

to play against him there?

635

:

Kyle: Yeah.

636

:

It's always good playing against him.

637

:

He's a really good player

638

:

CB: Yeah, it is.

639

:

Kyle: he's had a good season and

still having a good season, obviously.

640

:

And, um, it was just, it's just always

cool, especially with me playing in

641

:

Charlottesville the last two summers.

642

:

So I know a good amount of those guys.

643

:

Um, so it's always fun just

connecting with past teammates

644

:

and, you know, lifelong friends

and it's just always a good time.

645

:

Gary: Friday up at Marshall, you

know, we, we weren't able to watch,

646

:

they weren't streaming the game.

647

:

So we had this janky radio

broadcast and live stats.

648

:

But from everyone I talked to who was

actually at the game, it sounds like you

649

:

all were hitting the ball hard, right?

650

:

Just right at him and kind of

Marshall was getting almost.

651

:

Just finding little holes, blooping

things in, taking advantage of stuff.

652

:

To me, it didn't feel like it was,

you know, a, a bad game, just kind of

653

:

a bad luck kind of situation there.

654

:

Kyle: Yeah.

655

:

I mean, they had, I think they had maybe

eight hits and we had like four or five,

656

:

but, uh, we were barreling some balls up.

657

:

I mean, Luke, who's been, uh,

been tremendous this season.

658

:

He, I mean, he had one of the most

unlucky days I I've seen in a while.

659

:

I mean, he hit four or five balls,

I mean, right at every outfielder

660

:

at a hundred miles an hour.

661

:

And I mean, up and down the lineup,

we were, if we were probably playing

662

:

at the bud, who knows, probably

would've had seven homers, but you

663

:

know, we weren't playing at the bud.

664

:

So we were playing in West

Virginia and it's a new park.

665

:

It was a cool little park.

666

:

Um, there's nothing really around it,

but it was a nice little park to play at.

667

:

And it just, you know,

she wasn't going our way.

668

:

They were.

669

:

They were swinging, they were swinging

the bats and they were just, you know,

670

:

blooping them between, uh, the infield and

our outfielders and through some holes.

671

:

And it's just how, how

the game is sometimes.

672

:

And, you know, you just gotta, you

can't change anything about it.

673

:

It's just how it goes.

674

:

CB: You know, when you talk about

getting through some holes, you

675

:

and Kenny don't let a lot get by

you on that side of the infield.

676

:

I know we had Kenny on, we talked

about how much pride you guys take.

677

:

Um, a lot of trash talking you

guys do about how good you are.

678

:

Like, talk to me about, about that,

about the pride you take in your defense.

679

:

Kyle: Um, I, I take, I

know I take a lot of pride.

680

:

I love defense.

681

:

That's probably one of my favorite

things to do, um, on a baseball field.

682

:

Uh, it's just always been fun

for me no matter where I'm at.

683

:

That's just kind of, that's just

kind of like my bread and butter.

684

:

And, uh, I think, uh, I've played

with Kenny obviously for three years.

685

:

This is the third year now.

686

:

Um, and I think this year Kenny has really

like found a, found a love for defense.

687

:

Like he's, he's always been

good at it, but I think he's

688

:

really found a passion for it.

689

:

And especially with like being next

to him, like we're always like,

690

:

man, this left side, you might as

well just, Hit it somewhere else.

691

:

Cause it's not really

going to get through here.

692

:

Like, so hitters just unlucky kind

of being up there and that's just

693

:

kind of how we take it in every day.

694

:

Like if you want to hit it to the

left side, then, you know, you're

695

:

going to be in a bad mood all game.

696

:

CB: I mean, it is like that.

697

:

You see a, you see a ball hit there

where it is, it's at the point where

698

:

it's surprising if a ball gets through.

699

:

So, I mean, that's impressive

that you guys do that.

700

:

Kyle: yeah.

701

:

Gary: I think Kenny said that if you

hit the ball to the left side, you

702

:

might as well not even run to first.

703

:

I think that was his exact words

on the podcast a few weeks ago.

704

:

Kyle: Yeah.

705

:

That's, that's what we

talked about all the time.

706

:

CB: And you know, what I think

was even more impressive here is

707

:

I've been watching you play ball

since you're about like 14 or so.

708

:

So I've always known you're

outstanding defender.

709

:

Uh, but last year when you came

in, uh, kind of the second half

710

:

of the year, you played a lot of

outfield and didn't miss a beat.

711

:

I mean, you were phenomenal out there

for, I think you were telling me you

712

:

hadn't played hardly any outfield

and you were outstanding at it.

713

:

So I mean, it's just one of those,

it's very impressive to see that

714

:

the athleticism and that baseball

intelligence just goes everywhere.

715

:

Kyle: Yeah.

716

:

Uh, the, honestly, I actually

really liked the outfield.

717

:

Um, if I had a chance to play

outfield, I would love to do it.

718

:

And I would treat it just like shortstop.

719

:

The last time I played the outfield

other than last year was my freshman

720

:

year high school, uh, in the fall

league, uh, when I was at Salem, and I

721

:

was actually playing center field and

I was using an infield mid out there.

722

:

And, uh, then I got to college and

use an outfield mitt obviously.

723

:

And it was like, uh, it was, it felt

just different out there because felt

724

:

like you had a mega mitt, like when

you go to Omaha and you try on that

725

:

mega mitt, that's what it, that's

what it kind of felt like last year.

726

:

But I actually, as much as I

love the infield and shortstop, I

727

:

actually really like the outfield.

728

:

And, um, if one day I was

asked by outfield, I would

729

:

do it with the shortstop.

730

:

No regret and no questions.

731

:

Cause I would love to do it and it's fun.

732

:

CB: Yeah.

733

:

I mean, whoever would choose to

put you out there, they wouldn't

734

:

be making a mistake, man.

735

:

You would, you would hunt them down.

736

:

That's for sure.

737

:

And the arm, I mean, the

arm plays out there too.

738

:

So that's great to see, man.

739

:

Kyle: Yeah.

740

:

It's all it's, it's, it's cool.

741

:

Like watching, like when, when an

outfitter throws somebody out, like.

742

:

I love to see it.

743

:

Cause it like, I've been out there before

and when you throw somebody out, it's

744

:

like the best feeling in the world.

745

:

Cause it's like, you feel like

you have an absolute bazooka.

746

:

CB: Yeah.

747

:

That's one of the few things I ever

was able to do halfway decently in

748

:

baseball was throw from the outfield.

749

:

So I definitely understand that feeling.

750

:

It's, there's nothing better than

getting somebody from, you feel like

751

:

you're a mile away and you get them out.

752

:

It's like, that's, that's

pretty great feeling.

753

:

Kyle: Yeah,

754

:

Gary: Something about seeing that

throw come from your hand and

755

:

one hop perfectly to the catcher

and they turn and get the tag.

756

:

There's just something

very satisfying about it.

757

:

Kyle: there is no doubt.

758

:

Gary: Your nickname is Batman.

759

:

A lot of people call you Batman.

760

:

I think CB even calls that

when we hopped on here.

761

:

What is the origin story of that nickname?

762

:

Like, when did you pick that up?

763

:

Who gave it to you?

764

:

And how does it just keep catching on

with no matter who you get teamed up with?

765

:

Kyle: Um, so it started last year.

766

:

Uh, I wasn't really on the

field much like, uh, throughout

767

:

the first half of the season.

768

:

And then we played Princeton in a

midweek and I don't really know, like,

769

:

I don't really know if there's like a

specific backstory to it, but I remember

770

:

just the night before Princeton.

771

:

Uh, I was watching, uh, one of the Batman

movie and like, I came out the next day

772

:

and I didn't start, but I got in the

game and I hit like a double and a Homer.

773

:

And I was just like, I just took

like, obviously a bat and then a man.

774

:

And I called myself Batman.

775

:

And I just started just talking

to myself that way and making

776

:

it like a positive thing.

777

:

And then like, when I got in the lineup,

like I would go up to the plate and I'd

778

:

be like, all right, Batman, here you go.

779

:

And then it kind of, I feel like that

carried me a little bit in the, like

780

:

how my mentality was and just like being

able to swing the bat because Batman,

781

:

like you always look at him, he's always

like the hero and he's always like,

782

:

he's always defeating other people and

he's just like the man of the hour.

783

:

And like, that's like kind of how I

took my approach in and just like felt

784

:

like that I could just do anything

when I just said that to myself.

785

:

CB: I love that.

786

:

The origin is literally you going, Batman.

787

:

Fantastic.

788

:

Gary: Oh, awesome.

789

:

Well, I wanted to ask you, you've

been with the team for a bit.

790

:

You've been around a

lot of different guys.

791

:

Yeah.

792

:

What are some of the odd, like

new traditions and superstitions

793

:

that the team is doing this year?

794

:

We, we always ask the pitchers

what they do in the bullpen.

795

:

Uh, so we've got to ask the position

players, like what are some of

796

:

those pregame rituals and traditions

you all have adopted this year?

797

:

Kyle: Um, I don't know if there's

anything really that has changed,

798

:

um, like from what we do.

799

:

And, you know, it's just, we show up

when we need to stretch and stretch

800

:

and take BP and, uh, BP's great.

801

:

And then we kind of just all go in

the locker room and bond a little bit.

802

:

And I don't really know if there's any

like superstition, we don't really have

803

:

like any team superstitions, I would say.

804

:

But.

805

:

Uh, something that is a little different

and started this weekend is this

806

:

the first time since I've been here.

807

:

We wore white pants on the road.

808

:

We wore white pants with Hudson

blue tops on Sunday because we

809

:

won with them at Harvard Park.

810

:

And played really well.

811

:

And then we just happened to

play really well too on Sunday.

812

:

And so you'll be seeing probably

a lot of white pant Hudson tops

813

:

on the road from here on out.

814

:

So I think that's, that's new, but

other than that, I really, I don't

815

:

think there's really many superstitions.

816

:

We have this like hitters, like before

the game, like as a team, like some

817

:

people have their own obviously, but

I think like as a collective group,

818

:

there isn't really one that I can

point out on the top of my head,

819

:

Gary: So it's just the

bullpen being weirdos.

820

:

CB: You guys gotta get TJ, TJ Aiken

on board with the thumbs down.

821

:

Cause he, every time he gets a hit,

y'all are in there in the dugout.

822

:

Like, give me your thumbs

and TJ's does not pay.

823

:

We gotta, we gotta lock this freshman up.

824

:

You know, we gotta, you're

an upperclassman Kyle.

825

:

You gotta take care of this kid.

826

:

Kyle: Yeah, TJ needs to

start doing that for sure.

827

:

I actually didn't notice that.

828

:

So next time he, I don't

know if he'll listen to this,

829

:

but next time he does that.

830

:

So starting tomorrow, he gets a

single and he doesn't do that.

831

:

I'm gonna have to, I'm gonna

have to, uh, get him straight.

832

:

CB: Yeah, he's getting in there.

833

:

I told him the other day, I

said, left field's yours, man.

834

:

Just take it.

835

:

And, but he's, he's getting

all these hits and just leaving

836

:

those guys hanging in the dugout.

837

:

We can't, we gotta be a team.

838

:

We can't do that.

839

:

Kyle: Yeah, that is true.

840

:

CB: So you've been hitting, uh, you've hit

a little bit all over the lineup, right?

841

:

You were leading off some, you've

hit the two hole, three hole cleanup.

842

:

Um, and you know, going back to

other years, obviously you've

843

:

hit down lower in the order too.

844

:

Where do you feel works best for

you or does it even matter to you?

845

:

Kyle: I don't think there's

really a, a specific spot that

846

:

works best for me, I think.

847

:

And I don't think there's like,

as long as I'm, to me, as long

848

:

as I'm hitting in the lineup.

849

:

Like, I feel like it doesn't really

matter where I am, but I think that

850

:

the way that our lineup is now has been

like very, very good and very consistent

851

:

from, for the last couple weeks.

852

:

And so I, you know, I was, I like

leading off, like I've usually

853

:

let off throughout my whole life.

854

:

Um, but I don't really think

I have a specific spot that.

855

:

Um, that is like, I need to be here.

856

:

That's the comfort level.

857

:

Like whether I'm in the nine, I'm in

the four, the one, two, three, seven,

858

:

matter what, I think just being able

to compete and win from any spot lineup

859

:

is what's honestly what works for me.

860

:

CB: Yeah, I like hearing you say that

because I mean when I when I watch it bad

861

:

I don't think it really matters because

you are you have a very versatile bat You

862

:

know, you can hit for some power when you

sometimes you can hit for you know You're

863

:

a great line drive hitter and I think when

you're able to Go direct to the ball and

864

:

use that lever because I mean, you know,

you're not a you're not a real tall guy

865

:

But you are, you know six foot six one.

866

:

I'm not sure where you're at.

867

:

But and you know, you're a

skinny kid But you're strong.

868

:

Um, and the times I see where you

know, sometimes I think you get a

869

:

little You know Where you're kind of

trying to coil and kind of explode.

870

:

And occasionally, so maybe your head

kind of going up and down and that's

871

:

where I've seen you struggle some, but

when you like to let this past week,

872

:

it was very clear, like no head still,

you're just going straight to the ball.

873

:

And it's like, man, you are a dangerous

hitter when you got everything

874

:

going in the right direction.

875

:

Kyle: Yeah, that is true.

876

:

Was at a luncheon the other

day over at the chart way.

877

:

And, uh, it was just a bunch of like

people that fund our scholarships here.

878

:

And the one guy, he was at the game.

879

:

He was sitting, sitting at my table

and he goes, be honest with me.

880

:

When the bases were loaded with two

outs at Harbor park, were you trying

881

:

to hit that thing over the fence?

882

:

And, uh, I just was honest with him.

883

:

I was just like, yeah, like

those first few pitches, man.

884

:

I was just trying to let one eat.

885

:

Like, there's really nothing loose.

886

:

We had a good lead at that time.

887

:

And, uh, I mean, sometimes I can, like, if

there's a spot like that and, you know, we

888

:

have a decent lead and I, I like hitting

with runners on like early in the count,

889

:

I'll try and really just explode on one.

890

:

And sometimes that gets me into

trouble and, you know, sometimes it

891

:

works out, but I think when I just

stay very calm and like, don't try

892

:

and do too much is when everything

starts going in the right direction,

893

:

CB: Yeah, I mean, it's crazy.

894

:

I'm I'm with you in the right situation.

895

:

Yeah, you got a big lead and basic

juice, man Take your hats go for it.

896

:

Why not?

897

:

But like you said then you get once

you get two strikes like alright Now

898

:

we're back more controlled swing So

it's it's just that kind of thought

899

:

process is great to hear because I

meant just probably shows the you've

900

:

always again You've always been a high

IQ ball player to me But just think

901

:

like that probably a couple years ago.

902

:

You might not have that

same thought process.

903

:

That's good to hear

904

:

Gary: All right, Kyle, we got one

more question for you, and it's

905

:

one that we've asked everyone

who's come on the show so far.

906

:

Uh, we know we're getting the college

football video game back this summer.

907

:

I'm personally hoping that leads

to the college baseball game

908

:

eventually coming back as well.

909

:

They make a college baseball

game and you're in it.

910

:

What is your overall rating?

911

:

And are you going to absolutely

dominate your teammates while

912

:

playing against them with yourself?

913

:

Kyle: I mean, personally, I

would say my rating is a 99.

914

:

But, uh, I have some pretty good

teammates who are good at like, uh,

915

:

and we'll be the show, as you know.

916

:

Um, so there'd be some good matchups.

917

:

I think, uh, I would dominate some

people and some people would dominate

918

:

me, but, uh, in the long run, I'm going

to be competitive and it's going to

919

:

be a, it's going to be a good game.

920

:

Cause that's just, I'm not,

I don't want to lose anybody.

921

:

Don't ever want to lose anybody,

but, uh, you know, you can't

922

:

really win them all, but.

923

:

I'm going to try and win them all.

924

:

Gary: So I think you and Luke

are in the 99 overall bucket.

925

:

So the two of you hitting together

there at 99 would be pretty solid.

926

:

We had a couple guys that went like the

humble route with like 82 and things like

927

:

that, but glad to, glad to hear the 99.

928

:

CB: I love it.

929

:

I think as a hitter, you got to believe

like you, you fail so much as a hitter.

930

:

You got to believe you're a 99.

931

:

Otherwise you'd never succeed.

932

:

That's great, man.

933

:

Kyle: Yeah.

934

:

I mean, I think, I think just off that,

like, like you said, like, you got

935

:

to believe her the best one up there.

936

:

Cause, um, I mean, for me, like

personally, like from my freshman year to

937

:

last year to this year, like, you know,

I've been at the top of the world and

938

:

I've been at the bottom of the world,

like the difference between the two years

939

:

is just going out there thinking that,

You're, you're better than everybody else.

940

:

And you're that 99 overall rating.

941

:

So I think, you know, obviously like when

you say, when, when I say 99 overall,

942

:

like, I'm not trying to be like, Oh, I'm

the best player like to ever walk this

943

:

earth, but it's just like trying to, you

know, tell yourself that you're a great

944

:

player and hitting is already hard enough.

945

:

So you gotta, you gotta just tell

yourself you're the best one there.

946

:

And, um, then it'll lead to good things.

947

:

CB: Nah, man.

948

:

Don't back off it.

949

:

You're a 99 pal.

950

:

We got you, but we know what you meant.

951

:

You're 99.

952

:

We're believing it.

953

:

Gary: Well Kyle, thanks

so much for spending a few

954

:

minutes of your day with us.

955

:

Uh, good luck against VCU on Tuesday

and then of course this weekend at

956

:

the bud against Louisiana Monroe.

957

:

Thank you so much, Kyle.

958

:

Kyle: Thank you.

959

:

CB: Thanks Kyle.

960

:

Appreciate it.

961

:

Gary: Welcome back to the

Hudson Homer's podcast.

962

:

CB and I are joined by a second

special guest for today's episode, Mike

963

:

McHugh, who is a ODU baseball alumni

and is going to be hosting some really

964

:

awesome ODU baseball alumni events

this weekend against Louisiana Monroe.

965

:

Mike, thanks so much

for hopping on with us.

966

:

Mike: Hey guys, it's great to be with you.

967

:

And again, you guys do an awesome job

keeping us, uh, keeping us informed.

968

:

We appreciate it.

969

:

And I'm really.

970

:

Uh, thankful to you guys for having

me on to be able to talk about some

971

:

of this good stuff we got going

on and Monarch baseball, baby.

972

:

Gary: Oh yeah.

973

:

Well, thank you so much for

the kind words there, Mike.

974

:

We definitely are hoping to support

your group in any way you can, but I

975

:

know you were at ODU from 85 to 87.

976

:

Uh, tell us about your time playing

at the Bud, any cool people you played

977

:

with, played for, and then, uh, what

was life like for you after ODU?

978

:

Mike: Yeah, it was, uh, you know

what, I wouldn't, I wouldn't

979

:

change it for, uh, for anything.

980

:

And it was, uh, you really look back and

you look back at how you were impacted

981

:

by those people and the time, you know,

and the times that you spent there.

982

:

Um, you know, I played for

Newman for Mark Newman.

983

:

And he was a tough coach to play for,

but many, many years later, you know,

984

:

I found myself, uh, really, you know,

reiterating things that I learned

985

:

from him, not baseball related either.

986

:

You know what I mean?

987

:

So as you get into the business

world and, and things like that,

988

:

um, I really appreciated what he,

to me in, in that, in that respect.

989

:

And I think a lot of guys that we

had, you know, and like I said, he

990

:

was tough, tough guy, but, uh, new

baseball and, uh, prepared us just

991

:

for, for everything beyond baseball.

992

:

And, um, so that was,

yes, back in the eighties.

993

:

And so I spent, uh, three years there.

994

:

That's a long time ago, but you know,

I spent three years there and, uh,

995

:

wound up signing, uh, after that.

996

:

I signed after my junior year out

of the, I played in the valley for a

997

:

couple of years and, uh, signed with

the Dodgers, uh, played with the Dodgers

998

:

organization, uh, for a couple of years.

999

:

And then, uh, Dr.

:

00:50:00,699 --> 00:50:04,629

Jobe took care of the rest of that and

I had Tommy John and I was kind of done.

:

00:50:04,639 --> 00:50:08,719

But, uh, yeah, then after that,

I went on, I coached for a while.

:

00:50:08,769 --> 00:50:14,119

Uh, I coached actually, uh, Bunch

of different places, uh, started

:

00:50:14,119 --> 00:50:17,499

out in, you know, just some local

smaller schools up here in Jersey.

:

00:50:17,729 --> 00:50:22,479

Um, and, uh, then I eventually

went out to, uh, Kansas State.

:

00:50:22,909 --> 00:50:27,849

I was pitching coach out of Kansas state

and then, uh, actually to back, back

:

00:50:27,849 --> 00:50:32,519

home, back East to one of our, uh, one

of our old nemesis is, uh, Charlotte.

:

00:50:32,629 --> 00:50:35,199

I was a pitching coach at

Charlotte for, uh, for a while.

:

00:50:35,239 --> 00:50:39,379

So, and then, uh, then I grew

up and realized I needed to,

:

00:50:39,379 --> 00:50:41,209

uh, I needed to get a real job.

:

00:50:41,209 --> 00:50:47,039

So, uh, I got into, uh, I get into the

mortgage business and, and then like, I

:

00:50:47,039 --> 00:50:50,379

always say, you know, now, now what I'm

doing, I'm selling pharmaceuticals and,

:

00:50:50,379 --> 00:50:56,399

um, now, so, uh, uh, You know, it's been

a, it's been a rollercoaster, but, uh,

:

00:50:56,399 --> 00:51:01,969

I kind of done a lot of stuff and, um,

you know what, I, I look back fondly on,

:

00:51:01,969 --> 00:51:07,099

um, on my time there at Old Dominion,

and it's, uh, it was a great fit for me.

:

00:51:07,709 --> 00:51:13,469

And, uh, I love, I love how the program

has grown and, and the school itself.

:

00:51:13,474 --> 00:51:16,869

I mean, it was quite a bit different,

as you can imagine back then.

:

00:51:16,869 --> 00:51:17,939

So, there you go.

:

00:51:17,939 --> 00:51:19,209

There's me in a nutshell.

:

00:51:19,209 --> 00:51:20,069

CB: Now, am I correct?

:

00:51:20,079 --> 00:51:22,749

You played with, uh, when

Wiley Lee was playing there?

:

00:51:22,749 --> 00:51:23,389

Mike: Yes, sir.

:

00:51:23,469 --> 00:51:24,279

I uh, yep.

:

00:51:24,309 --> 00:51:25,629

I played with Wiley.

:

00:51:26,239 --> 00:51:27,409

I played with a bunch of good Nick.

:

00:51:27,409 --> 00:51:28,949

I don't know if you guys know Nick Booth.

:

00:51:28,979 --> 00:51:31,059

Uh, he was there my freshman year.

:

00:51:31,249 --> 00:51:34,299

Um, Sean O'Hare, Kevin Burris.

:

00:51:36,344 --> 00:51:44,504

Great left handed pitcher Tommy West

Like I said Wiley Oh God Tommy Bell

:

00:51:44,534 --> 00:51:50,944

senior So Tommy's dad Terry was already

gone Terry had left before I got there,

:

00:51:51,104 --> 00:51:55,604

but Jimmy Martin Rodney Imes, there's

just a couple to name, to name a few.

:

00:51:55,614 --> 00:51:57,814

We had a good, we had a

good, we had a good year.

:

00:51:57,834 --> 00:52:01,644

86, we had a really good, or

85, we had a really good year.

:

00:52:01,684 --> 00:52:06,284

Yeah, we were, uh, seventh in the

country, I think, at some, at one

:

00:52:06,284 --> 00:52:10,644

point, and then, uh, yeah, we ran

into a buzzsaw down in South Carolina.

:

00:52:10,954 --> 00:52:13,114

Seems to be, seems to happen, doesn't it?

:

00:52:13,469 --> 00:52:13,889

CB: it does.

:

00:52:13,909 --> 00:52:15,869

South Carolina has not

been friendly to us.

:

00:52:15,869 --> 00:52:19,809

But yeah, you got the 85 team, that whole

group of guys, they're one that if you

:

00:52:19,809 --> 00:52:23,779

look back through the ODE record books,

you see that year and those names a lot.

:

00:52:23,789 --> 00:52:26,489

So that's, what was it like getting

to play on a team like that?

:

00:52:26,529 --> 00:52:27,579

Was that prominent?

:

00:52:27,579 --> 00:52:30,989

Mike: it was, uh, it was tough to get

in the lineup, I'll tell you that.

:

00:52:31,059 --> 00:52:38,229

Um, but, uh, yeah, I was, I was a relief

pitcher and, um, and I always see, I

:

00:52:38,229 --> 00:52:42,859

always joke with Tommy Bell senior and

he'll tell you this, uh, cause Tommy

:

00:52:42,859 --> 00:52:45,779

was, you know, Tommy was like a fifth

year senior at the time when we, and

:

00:52:45,789 --> 00:52:49,309

we actually won, we were actually a

Sunbelt back then, the old Sunbelt.

:

00:52:49,809 --> 00:52:53,549

And, um, we had, we actually at that

point in time, believe it or not, you

:

00:52:53,549 --> 00:52:55,359

know what we did, we hosted a tournament.

:

00:52:57,159 --> 00:52:57,919

At the bud.

:

00:52:58,289 --> 00:53:01,409

So, um, I know that's kind

of a sticky subject, right?

:

00:53:01,409 --> 00:53:03,019

But, uh, hopefully not for too long.

:

00:53:03,039 --> 00:53:05,359

But, uh, um, yeah.

:

00:53:05,359 --> 00:53:10,669

So we hosted the Sun Belt tournament

and, uh, we were in our, in the

:

00:53:10,669 --> 00:53:11,849

last game of the tournament.

:

00:53:11,899 --> 00:53:12,994

It was, you know, pretty good.

:

00:53:13,124 --> 00:53:16,594

Packed crowd and I think we went,

I know it was extra innings.

:

00:53:16,594 --> 00:53:22,974

It was, it was late, you know, and,

um, Tommy bell had come into the

:

00:53:22,974 --> 00:53:24,884

game because Jimmy Martin got hurt.

:

00:53:24,944 --> 00:53:29,384

Our third baseman got hurt and T bell

didn't play a whole lot, you know, but

:

00:53:29,694 --> 00:53:33,329

you know what, he was always ready,

stayed ready and he gets a, you know,

:

00:53:33,999 --> 00:53:37,719

To end the game, he gets like a hundred

hopper in the middle, you know, in the

:

00:53:37,729 --> 00:53:40,939

middle infield, we score the winning

run, walk off, place goes crazy.

:

00:53:40,939 --> 00:53:43,919

And I always, I, cause now we're in

the 14th inning or whatever it was

:

00:53:43,929 --> 00:53:46,629

13th inning, and I was ready, I was

in the bullpen ready to come in.

:

00:53:47,069 --> 00:53:49,929

And I just tell him every time I

see him, thank you for getting that

:

00:53:49,929 --> 00:53:52,099

hit because I, cause I was next.

:

00:53:52,809 --> 00:53:55,279

And, uh, I don't know

if I was ready for that.

:

00:53:55,339 --> 00:53:57,599

So, but that was great

playing with all those guys.

:

00:53:58,059 --> 00:54:00,449

Um, and they'll all be there this weekend.

:

00:54:00,589 --> 00:54:05,824

You know, let's, uh, we get a good

turnout and, um, It's, uh, it's great

:

00:54:05,824 --> 00:54:09,274

seeing them and great, uh, reminiscing,

you know, we'll tell the same stories

:

00:54:09,274 --> 00:54:10,794

over and over again, but it's all great.

:

00:54:10,934 --> 00:54:12,584

And, uh, hopefully we'll

get some more people.

:

00:54:12,584 --> 00:54:16,144

We'll get some of the young, the

young old timers coming out too.

:

00:54:16,284 --> 00:54:16,634

So,

:

00:54:17,514 --> 00:54:18,754

but, uh, yeah, it was great.

:

00:54:19,449 --> 00:54:21,989

CB: Yeah, I saw a few of the

young old timers, uh, this

:

00:54:21,989 --> 00:54:23,359

past Tuesday at Harbor Parks.

:

00:54:23,359 --> 00:54:26,319

Um, I'm sure a few of them are going

to be out there, uh, to see you.

:

00:54:26,319 --> 00:54:27,289

Mike: Well, I hope they are.

:

00:54:27,359 --> 00:54:31,779

Like I was telling Gary, I was

like, you know, the alumni.

:

00:54:31,984 --> 00:54:32,314

thing.

:

00:54:32,324 --> 00:54:33,954

We actually do the alumni weekend.

:

00:54:33,954 --> 00:54:37,194

They do the whole alumni golf

tournament and stuff in the fall.

:

00:54:37,224 --> 00:54:38,354

We try to get down for that.

:

00:54:38,354 --> 00:54:42,304

And this is kind of, I kind of try to,

uh, market this a little different.

:

00:54:42,304 --> 00:54:44,504

This is more like, you know,

kind of a baseball thing.

:

00:54:44,504 --> 00:54:46,764

It's more of an old old timers weekend.

:

00:54:46,774 --> 00:54:51,864

So, um, hopefully that will kind

of stick, you know, but, uh, the O.

:

00:54:51,864 --> 00:54:52,154

D.

:

00:54:52,154 --> 00:54:52,334

A.

:

00:54:52,334 --> 00:54:52,564

F.

:

00:54:52,564 --> 00:54:53,754

They do a great job.

:

00:54:53,754 --> 00:54:54,824

Java lines.

:

00:54:55,054 --> 00:54:58,819

Um, He's stepped up and

really helped us a lot.

:

00:54:58,819 --> 00:55:00,779

I don't know if you guys know

John, but he's a great guy.

:

00:55:00,989 --> 00:55:05,819

Um, and, uh, he stepped up and

they've stepped in and, and really

:

00:55:05,819 --> 00:55:10,369

kind of, um, taking the ride with

us, you know, and, and, and gotten

:

00:55:10,369 --> 00:55:13,659

this thing to where it is now we're

in our fourth year of doing it now.

:

00:55:13,999 --> 00:55:18,359

Um, so, um, we're kind of hoping that

it's going to get bigger and bigger.

:

00:55:18,429 --> 00:55:20,299

So hopefully this will help,

:

00:55:20,509 --> 00:55:21,379

Gary: yeah, absolutely.

:

00:55:21,389 --> 00:55:25,459

Anything we can do to spread the word

on this to our baseball alumni that

:

00:55:25,459 --> 00:55:29,899

are out there Um, you know, what,

what events do you have going on?

:

00:55:29,899 --> 00:55:33,879

And like, what's the best way that fans

can help support what you all are doing?

:

00:55:33,924 --> 00:55:35,204

Mike: yeah, that's great.

:

00:55:35,224 --> 00:55:38,124

We, uh, we actually, you know,

we got a whole weekend plan.

:

00:55:38,124 --> 00:55:41,614

We got, you know, and like I said,

this thing kind of, kind of started

:

00:55:41,644 --> 00:55:43,434

very organically, you know what I mean?

:

00:55:43,434 --> 00:55:47,094

It was during COVID, we're all sitting

there, everybody's doing their own

:

00:55:47,094 --> 00:55:49,164

thing, not going out, not doing anything.

:

00:55:49,164 --> 00:55:52,194

And eventually I just started

a text group and said, what's

:

00:55:52,194 --> 00:55:53,554

going on out there, Monarch?

:

00:55:53,554 --> 00:55:55,344

So, you know, who's

around, who's doing what?

:

00:55:55,354 --> 00:55:57,094

And you know, we're all

sitting by ourselves doing the

:

00:55:57,094 --> 00:55:59,104

same thing, drinking alone.

:

00:55:59,564 --> 00:56:04,909

Um, and, uh, that started and then that

started, Hey, we got to get together.

:

00:56:04,909 --> 00:56:06,109

And of course we couldn't do it.

:

00:56:06,119 --> 00:56:09,839

at was like the, the April of:

:

00:56:09,889 --> 00:56:12,109

So that was like right

at the beginning of it.

:

00:56:12,119 --> 00:56:14,519

So of course we couldn't,

there was no season that year.

:

00:56:14,519 --> 00:56:19,439

So then the following season we, we

planned it for:

:

00:56:19,449 --> 00:56:23,239

You know, that was the first time we had

seen a lot of guys in 35 something years.

:

00:56:23,729 --> 00:56:28,319

Um, And then, uh, at that, you know,

during that time, that's when Newman

:

00:56:28,319 --> 00:56:30,169

had passed, Mark Newman had passed away.

:

00:56:31,029 --> 00:56:33,969

Um, so we, we kind of

did a tribute to him.

:

00:56:34,489 --> 00:56:39,789

Um, and we had a bunch of guys come

back and it was great, but so we do

:

00:56:39,819 --> 00:56:44,129

the, the ODAF, they'll have a, um, a

tent set up for us down on Rally Alley.

:

00:56:44,769 --> 00:56:48,929

Um, and they put on a nice spread for us

and drinks and, you know, food and stuff.

:

00:56:49,089 --> 00:56:52,459

And, uh, so this year we

got, we got that going.

:

00:56:52,459 --> 00:56:55,149

That's going to be, I guess the

game time's at four, I believe.

:

00:56:55,149 --> 00:56:57,089

I was just texting back

and forth with John.

:

00:56:57,119 --> 00:57:03,209

And, um, so the, the, the game is at four

rally alley picnic, you know, old timers

:

00:57:03,209 --> 00:57:05,709

picnic is going to be at, um, three 30.

:

00:57:06,209 --> 00:57:09,829

So, you know, between

30, that'll be going on.

:

00:57:09,849 --> 00:57:10,829

Come down and see us.

:

00:57:10,829 --> 00:57:14,019

We'll have some, uh, stuff, you

know, we'll have some merch going on.

:

00:57:14,019 --> 00:57:14,699

Some nice stuff.

:

00:57:14,699 --> 00:57:16,279

I don't know if you can see

the sweatshirt I got on.

:

00:57:16,339 --> 00:57:19,519

This is a, one of the things,

it's a nice lightweight pullover.

:

00:57:19,529 --> 00:57:22,929

and what any money we raise from, you

know, we try to get people to kind

:

00:57:22,929 --> 00:57:26,309

of give, you know, and give back, we

give it right to the right to John

:

00:57:26,319 --> 00:57:30,099

and right to the, the foundation

for the, for the baseball program.

:

00:57:30,099 --> 00:57:31,909

So we got that going on.

:

00:57:31,909 --> 00:57:37,514

We got the, um, The rally alley

cookout and that's the main day.

:

00:57:37,524 --> 00:57:38,354

You know, that's the main day.

:

00:57:38,354 --> 00:57:40,594

Well, a bunch of us are playing

golf on Friday at Cypress

:

00:57:40,594 --> 00:57:42,424

point, but that's not expected.

:

00:57:42,424 --> 00:57:44,324

If you want to play, tell

them to reach out to me.

:

00:57:44,334 --> 00:57:49,434

However, they on Facebook, um, we've

got a Facebook page too, if that would

:

00:57:49,444 --> 00:57:51,324

be the best way to get any information.

:

00:57:51,804 --> 00:57:53,634

It's ODU baseball alumni.

:

00:57:54,544 --> 00:57:59,384

So if they, if they can go on there,

they'll get all the information they need.

:

00:57:59,874 --> 00:58:07,504

And then after the game on Saturday, we

have a private room over at Max Barge.

:

00:58:08,204 --> 00:58:09,754

Um, over on Cali.

:

00:58:10,994 --> 00:58:16,269

So we got a, uh, we got a private

room, live entertainment, food, And

:

00:58:16,299 --> 00:58:17,439

we're not paying for your drinks.

:

00:58:17,439 --> 00:58:19,409

You got to pay, but they're

giving us a break on drinks.

:

00:58:19,409 --> 00:58:23,229

So, uh, they're giving us, you know,

happy hour pricing on drinks and stuff.

:

00:58:23,229 --> 00:58:26,099

So that'll go from like six

to nine, something like that.

:

00:58:26,629 --> 00:58:30,759

So it's kind of a good, uh, good

way to kind of get together.

:

00:58:30,759 --> 00:58:34,299

And then, uh, you know, and then Sunday

we kind of wrap it up and some will stay

:

00:58:34,299 --> 00:58:37,949

for the game and some will go home, but,

uh, and then we'll do it well, hopefully

:

00:58:37,949 --> 00:58:41,619

we'll do it next year, but, uh, this

is, uh, you know, this is a good one.

:

00:58:41,679 --> 00:58:43,789

So hopefully we'll get

some people out there.

:

00:58:43,789 --> 00:58:47,399

Gary: That, that sounds like a pretty

fun schedule of stuff that's going on.

:

00:58:47,689 --> 00:58:51,479

Uh, and you know, for fans, if you

were at the series last weekend, uh,

:

00:58:51,479 --> 00:58:54,679

the cool family kind of did the same

thing where they had that tent in the

:

00:58:54,679 --> 00:58:59,399

back rally alley, rented out, uh, and

there's a good gathering of, of people.

:

00:58:59,399 --> 00:58:59,629

So.

:

00:59:00,024 --> 00:59:03,314

Even if you just have regular tickets,

you can still go back there and say hello

:

00:59:03,314 --> 00:59:05,244

and definitely check out the merch tables.

:

00:59:05,244 --> 00:59:09,124

And I know just like when you're, you're

buying stuff from, from our site, all

:

00:59:09,124 --> 00:59:11,144

the money is going back into the program.

:

00:59:11,144 --> 00:59:13,624

So that is a, that's really,

really awesome to hear.

:

00:59:13,624 --> 00:59:14,404

Mike: Yeah, it's great.

:

00:59:14,424 --> 00:59:18,804

And, um, if they, if anybody wants

to, if you want to take part in the,

:

00:59:18,804 --> 00:59:23,404

um, in the rally alley cookout, I

don't, I think you got time just to,

:

00:59:23,404 --> 00:59:26,114

if you can just email John the lines,

:

00:59:27,174 --> 00:59:31,724

Just email him and say, Hey, we're

coming to the picnic at, uh, at Rally

:

00:59:31,724 --> 00:59:33,774

Alley and I got two people or whatever.

:

00:59:34,054 --> 00:59:37,024

So that would be, uh, just so he's got

it, just so we can get a head count.

:

00:59:37,024 --> 00:59:42,664

CB: I definitely would suggest anyone go

down there and talk to our alumni, talk

:

00:59:42,664 --> 00:59:46,514

to the guys, listen to like, as you said,

telling those same old stories, go down

:

00:59:46,514 --> 00:59:47,414

and listen to those same old stories.

:

00:59:47,414 --> 00:59:48,704

I'm personally, I love, talk to them.

:

00:59:49,224 --> 00:59:50,814

Hearing people tell baseball stories.

:

00:59:51,654 --> 00:59:54,754

There's nothing more fun than somebody

talking about, you know, this thing

:

00:59:54,754 --> 00:59:58,304

that happened 30 years ago You can

tell they've told the story 40 times

:

00:59:58,784 --> 01:00:03,404

Uh, probably the last Month, but it's

still just I I like hearing old baseball

:

01:00:03,404 --> 01:00:07,714

stories So if nothing else, you know

get down there hang out see some alumni.

:

01:00:07,724 --> 01:00:08,864

Here's some great stories

:

01:00:10,329 --> 01:00:10,459

Mike: Yeah.

:

01:00:10,469 --> 01:00:12,669

And like I said, there's going to

be some good players, some, some

:

01:00:12,669 --> 01:00:13,989

good ex players down there too.

:

01:00:14,059 --> 01:00:17,399

Like I, yeah, you know, you got,

you guys know James Williams, right?

:

01:00:17,409 --> 01:00:18,529

He's got the ODU page.

:

01:00:19,089 --> 01:00:20,409

He'll be there, of course.

:

01:00:20,459 --> 01:00:24,069

It's wall to wall ex players and,

you know, and some, like I said,

:

01:00:24,069 --> 01:00:25,649

some, some really good ones too.

:

01:00:25,669 --> 01:00:28,829

You know, Terry Bell will

be there and, uh, Biersie.

:

01:00:29,579 --> 01:00:31,149

I hope Finney gets, comes down.

:

01:00:31,149 --> 01:00:34,459

I go, I think about the years,

how the years have gone by.

:

01:00:34,509 --> 01:00:38,649

And, uh, you'd ask me about, you know,

back in the day, um, Back when I was,

:

01:00:38,679 --> 01:00:43,529

you know, when I was first coaching

back in the 90s early, God, early 90s.

:

01:00:43,539 --> 01:00:47,164

That's I know Finney from way

back when You know, we used to

:

01:00:47,164 --> 01:00:51,024

work, we used to work the camps

at Old Dominion when Mac was here.

:

01:00:51,154 --> 01:00:52,394

Pat McMahon and Newman.

:

01:00:52,634 --> 01:00:57,524

Um, but Finney was, I think maybe in his

first year at, uh, at VMI at the time.

:

01:00:58,414 --> 01:01:01,874

Also on that, I wanted to mention

something else too, if I could, guys.

:

01:01:01,924 --> 01:01:05,624

We're gonna do a little, uh, a little

shout out too, it's kind of a, uh,

:

01:01:05,664 --> 01:01:07,604

remembrance of, uh, Tim Parenton.

:

01:01:08,294 --> 01:01:12,344

Tim was a, he was a, uh,

assistant coach here, um, with.

:

01:01:12,784 --> 01:01:14,004

with pat mcmahon.

:

01:01:14,094 --> 01:01:16,904

I never played with him, but I

worked for him for some camps.

:

01:01:17,314 --> 01:01:20,094

He was a wonderful guy and he

went down to, he was head coach

:

01:01:20,094 --> 01:01:21,774

at north florida, I believe.

:

01:01:21,784 --> 01:01:24,284

And uh, he recently, he just

passed away this past year.

:

01:01:24,884 --> 01:01:27,764

And um, so we're gonna,

we're gonna honor him.

:

01:01:28,194 --> 01:01:31,644

Just to let them know we're thinking

about them and, uh, you know, let them

:

01:01:31,644 --> 01:01:33,144

know they had an impact on some of us.

:

01:01:33,144 --> 01:01:36,494

So that'd be great if we could get

some of some of those guys, you know,

:

01:01:36,494 --> 01:01:38,784

that actually played for him and I'm

sure there'll be some of them there.

:

01:01:38,814 --> 01:01:42,474

So I encourage them to

come up and talk to me.

:

01:01:42,474 --> 01:01:43,004

Gary: Well, Mike.

:

01:01:43,464 --> 01:01:46,744

We're just going to push the fans

that go hang out at Rally Alley,

:

01:01:46,804 --> 01:01:50,474

uh, in the back there, say hello,

uh, pick up some, some merch and

:

01:01:50,474 --> 01:01:52,024

know your support in the program.

:

01:01:52,504 --> 01:01:55,734

I'll likely be down there on Saturday

myself, so I'll be down there.

:

01:01:55,734 --> 01:01:58,144

I'm sure with a box full of

koozies I'm trying to get rid of.

:

01:01:58,524 --> 01:02:01,959

Uh, so we'll, uh, we'll add that to your

collection as well for a free giveaway.

:

01:02:02,369 --> 01:02:05,589

Uh, but Mike, really appreciate

you coming on and promoting this.

:

01:02:05,709 --> 01:02:08,999

Uh, we'll put it out with all the

social media links, uh, and of course

:

01:02:08,999 --> 01:02:10,549

onto your Facebook page as well.

:

01:02:10,559 --> 01:02:13,029

So that way everyone can, can

get the word out there, but

:

01:02:13,038 --> 01:02:14,009

thanks so much for joining us

:

01:02:14,069 --> 01:02:15,199

Mike: Hey, anytime guys.

:

01:02:15,199 --> 01:02:19,959

And again, thank you guys for all

you're doing and, um, keep it up and,

:

01:02:19,959 --> 01:02:23,849

uh, we'll be talking soon and make sure

you come down and see me on Saturday.

:

01:02:28,680 --> 01:02:30,220

Gary: Welcome back Monarch fans.

:

01:02:30,230 --> 01:02:34,930

I hope you enjoyed the conversations

with Kyle Edwards and Mike McHugh.

:

01:02:34,930 --> 01:02:36,360

Kyle was awesome.

:

01:02:36,370 --> 01:02:38,630

Gave us a lot of really great info there.

:

01:02:39,150 --> 01:02:41,900

Just an awesome kid to finally

have here on the program.

:

01:02:41,900 --> 01:02:42,630

What do you think, CB?

:

01:02:42,860 --> 01:02:43,960

CB: I love Kyle.

:

01:02:43,960 --> 01:02:45,130

I've been, I've been watching him.

:

01:02:45,130 --> 01:02:49,650

I think he committed to ODU when he was

a freshman in high school, which I don't

:

01:02:49,650 --> 01:02:50,880

think you can't even do that anymore.

:

01:02:50,890 --> 01:02:52,280

They can't even talk to you that early.

:

01:02:52,770 --> 01:02:56,480

Uh, and so I've been able to watch him

probably since he was about 14 years old

:

01:02:56,480 --> 01:02:58,480

and I've always just been such a big fan.

:

01:02:58,490 --> 01:03:02,055

He is, he's Always been a

phenomenal, uh, defender.

:

01:03:02,085 --> 01:03:04,805

He was a great hitter in high

school when he came to ODU.

:

01:03:05,145 --> 01:03:06,195

He struggled as a hitter.

:

01:03:06,195 --> 01:03:08,275

I think he kind of forgot

who he was for a while.

:

01:03:08,275 --> 01:03:11,535

And so it was wonderful last year

to see him take over the second half

:

01:03:11,535 --> 01:03:13,605

of the year and really be who he is.

:

01:03:13,635 --> 01:03:16,975

And he's been, you know, consistent

force in the lineup and on

:

01:03:16,975 --> 01:03:18,055

the field for us this year.

:

01:03:18,055 --> 01:03:24,505

So it's seeing a kid From Hampton

Roads play at ODU for me as a

:

01:03:24,505 --> 01:03:27,055

kid from Hampton Roads who went

to ODU is always a great thing.

:

01:03:27,055 --> 01:03:29,755

And so I'm always, those guys are always

gonna have a special place in my heart.

:

01:03:29,755 --> 01:03:30,975

Gary: Also enjoyed talking to Mike.

:

01:03:30,975 --> 01:03:33,865

It sounds like they're going to have

some pretty cool things set up over the

:

01:03:33,865 --> 01:03:37,470

weekend, so can't encourage you enough

to One, get out to the bud because we

:

01:03:37,560 --> 01:03:40,730

only have a few games left in the bud

and it's current configuration and

:

01:03:40,730 --> 01:03:41,950

you're going to miss it next year.

:

01:03:41,950 --> 01:03:46,880

I promise you to get to the bud, pop over

to rally alley, uh, you know, go to the

:

01:03:46,890 --> 01:03:50,450

back there where that 10 is set up and,

and get to meet some really cool baseball.

:

01:03:50,450 --> 01:03:52,450

I'm excited to meet an

awesome crowd there.

:

01:03:52,650 --> 01:03:56,180

I pick up some merge, help support

the program because we kind of have

:

01:03:56,180 --> 01:03:59,040

the same mission with what we're

doing for the monarchists and what

:

01:03:59,040 --> 01:04:00,280

they're doing with their alumni group.

:

01:04:00,530 --> 01:04:03,960

They just want to support the program

and get as many people involved in

:

01:04:03,960 --> 01:04:05,260

helping the program as possible.

:

01:04:05,820 --> 01:04:06,050

CB: Yeah.

:

01:04:06,050 --> 01:04:08,650

I mean, I'm sure there'll be guys

from all different eras, but even

:

01:04:08,650 --> 01:04:12,310

if you just talk to some of the guys

on the teams Mike played with, uh,

:

01:04:12,310 --> 01:04:15,430

the 85 team, they were ridiculous.

:

01:04:15,460 --> 01:04:18,350

If you go look through the, the

ODU media guide at any point,

:

01:04:18,690 --> 01:04:20,140

the 85 team is all over it.

:

01:04:20,140 --> 01:04:23,380

I think Wiley Lee and Todd

Azar both played for team USA.

:

01:04:23,380 --> 01:04:25,520

I mean, they were, they

were some ballplayers.

:

01:04:25,529 --> 01:04:26,340

They were some dudes.

:

01:04:26,340 --> 01:04:26,960

Gary: Yeah, definitely.

:

01:04:26,960 --> 01:04:27,570

I think, what would you say?

:

01:04:27,580 --> 01:04:29,510

51 and 11 was their record was

:

01:04:29,625 --> 01:04:30,645

CB: it was 50 and 11.

:

01:04:30,645 --> 01:04:32,565

Yeah, I think, like I said, I think

they were up to number seven in the

:

01:04:32,565 --> 01:04:36,345

country and that's back when the

Bud was, was one of the best, uh,

:

01:04:36,375 --> 01:04:37,815

places in all of college baseball.

:

01:04:38,190 --> 01:04:43,470

Uh, as you look at it today, almost

40 years later, it seems shocking,

:

01:04:43,480 --> 01:04:45,620

but it was, it was a premier place.

:

01:04:45,620 --> 01:04:48,440

Gary: Well, we will very hopefully

be getting back to that kind of

:

01:04:48,460 --> 01:04:50,360

status here in the next two years.

:

01:04:50,360 --> 01:04:53,860

There's so much excitement around

rebuilding the bud and getting

:

01:04:53,860 --> 01:04:55,500

all those, those cool features.

:

01:04:55,500 --> 01:04:59,910

And most importantly, allowing us to

host regionals and super regional.

:

01:04:59,940 --> 01:05:03,770

So at the end of the day, that's where

we want to be pretty much every season.

:

01:05:03,770 --> 01:05:04,279

If we can.

:

01:05:05,245 --> 01:05:06,235

CB: Yeah, I mean, that's the goal.

:

01:05:06,245 --> 01:05:10,375

That's the hope is that you, you

know, we, we all want that:

:

01:05:10,385 --> 01:05:11,805

season to happen every year.

:

01:05:11,875 --> 01:05:15,195

I mean, that was such a special year

for anybody who was a part of it.

:

01:05:15,225 --> 01:05:21,545

And, um, there was that bittersweetness

of not being able to get to host

:

01:05:21,585 --> 01:05:24,795

the conference series, get to

host the regional that you earned.

:

01:05:24,795 --> 01:05:24,855

Yeah.

:

01:05:25,215 --> 01:05:28,595

And that's one of the things I think

that's as special as that whole season

:

01:05:28,595 --> 01:05:31,995

will be will always be there will

always be that kind of memory at the

:

01:05:31,995 --> 01:05:34,215

end that kind of like, ah, that's

such a shame that we didn't get to do

:

01:05:34,225 --> 01:05:36,395

what every every team should get to do

:

01:05:36,395 --> 01:05:40,415

Gary: I've, I've always been the mindset

of, we need to make sure we're rewarding

:

01:05:40,415 --> 01:05:42,725

the teams that win a lot for us.

:

01:05:43,105 --> 01:05:45,225

Baseball is one of them

and women's soccer.

:

01:05:45,225 --> 01:05:46,055

They want a lot.

:

01:05:46,450 --> 01:05:50,230

And I have to give a shout out to

ODU men's tennis, who just won their

:

01:05:50,320 --> 01:05:52,870

second consecutive Sunbelt title.

:

01:05:52,880 --> 01:05:54,470

They are going to the

big dance for tennis.

:

01:05:55,100 --> 01:06:00,240

Congratulations to that team on just

continuing to be an elite program for us.

:

01:06:00,670 --> 01:06:01,260

It's in the school.

:

01:06:01,340 --> 01:06:01,790

CB: tennis school.

:

01:06:01,790 --> 01:06:05,180

Yeah, and I'll be honest, I, you know, I

know our tennis team has always been good.

:

01:06:05,180 --> 01:06:08,790

I really before this year, I hadn't

been out to see a tennis match

:

01:06:08,840 --> 01:06:12,340

and I went and I saw the men and

women both playing the same day.

:

01:06:13,180 --> 01:06:14,279

It was a it was a great time.

:

01:06:14,279 --> 01:06:16,100

I wish I'd have gone more frankly.

:

01:06:16,305 --> 01:06:16,985

They have those 10 a.

:

01:06:16,985 --> 01:06:17,145

m.

:

01:06:17,145 --> 01:06:19,695

starts and sometimes on

a Saturday, uh, 10 a.

:

01:06:19,695 --> 01:06:19,835

m.

:

01:06:19,835 --> 01:06:22,615

is a little too, uh, early

for me to start if they would

:

01:06:22,625 --> 01:06:24,505

do the more like a 1 a 1 1 p.

:

01:06:24,505 --> 01:06:24,795

m.

:

01:06:24,795 --> 01:06:25,555

or even at noon.

:

01:06:25,575 --> 01:06:28,645

I think I, but that's that's my

fault for not going out supporting

:

01:06:28,645 --> 01:06:30,035

them as strong as I should have.

:

01:06:30,404 --> 01:06:34,490

But I, I really enjoyed, uh, Give me watch

both the men's and women's tennis teams.

:

01:06:34,490 --> 01:06:36,940

I got to take some pictures

and it was a fun time.

:

01:06:37,380 --> 01:06:40,860

Um, so it definitely, I hope they go

down and man, I'd love to see them make

:

01:06:40,860 --> 01:06:44,840

a strong run down in the, uh, and so

they'll be tournament and good luck to the

:

01:06:44,850 --> 01:06:48,480

women's tennis, uh, this week they have

the conference tournament and I, I fully

:

01:06:48,480 --> 01:06:49,830

expect they're going to go and dominate.

:

01:06:49,840 --> 01:06:52,850

They, they have not had

much competition for them.

:

01:06:52,850 --> 01:06:54,940

There are some really good tennis players.

:

01:06:54,940 --> 01:06:55,710

Gary: They are dominant.

:

01:06:55,730 --> 01:06:59,480

They won their second consecutive regular

season title in the Sunbelt looking for

:

01:06:59,480 --> 01:07:01,029

their second straight Sunbelt title.

:

01:07:01,400 --> 01:07:03,550

Uh, so good luck to them, uh, for sure.

:

01:07:03,550 --> 01:07:07,670

But let's turn our attention

back to the fun slate that we

:

01:07:07,670 --> 01:07:09,440

have this week for ODU baseball.

:

01:07:09,720 --> 01:07:13,290

And we get to start with, you know,

those guys down the road for me here.

:

01:07:13,290 --> 01:07:17,360

VCU coming to the bud on Tuesday

:

01:07:17,660 --> 01:07:20,960

CB: It is always a good time

and you get to beat VCU.

:

01:07:21,170 --> 01:07:25,550

I mean, it just, it just really,

and, and we, we tend to, I

:

01:07:25,550 --> 01:07:26,930

don't know, I, maybe I'm wrong.

:

01:07:26,930 --> 01:07:30,080

It feels like we beat them more often

than we lose to them in baseball.

:

01:07:30,170 --> 01:07:34,300

Um, but they, I mean, I

do, uh, I do enjoy VCU.

:

01:07:34,300 --> 01:07:36,070

They always have, they're

always good people.

:

01:07:36,430 --> 01:07:37,660

Um, know a few of guys.

:

01:07:37,660 --> 01:07:38,410

I got a kid.

:

01:07:38,440 --> 01:07:39,070

Um.

:

01:07:40,350 --> 01:07:42,980

James McCready, uh, who is

from Greenbrier Christian.

:

01:07:42,980 --> 01:07:46,450

He was a teammate of Bailey Mattel

in high school, uh, Phil Forbes, the

:

01:07:46,450 --> 01:07:48,460

fifth, he played up in Newport news.

:

01:07:48,670 --> 01:07:51,730

Um, and they got cam knuckles who

played for the peninsula pilots.

:

01:07:52,100 --> 01:07:54,560

Um, looking at their stats, it

looks like those guys don't play a

:

01:07:54,560 --> 01:07:56,640

ton, but maybe because it's a mini

week, maybe they'll get in there.

:

01:07:56,650 --> 01:07:57,815

Maybe they'll throw them in there.

:

01:07:58,455 --> 01:08:03,135

Um, but, uh, they're, you know,

EC, uh, VCU is always a good team.

:

01:08:03,545 --> 01:08:06,565

Uh, just looking up here, Brandon

Ikey, speaking of the pilots, he

:

01:08:06,585 --> 01:08:10,205

plays for the Tri City, uh, Chili

Peppers, which has had some of the

:

01:08:10,205 --> 01:08:11,795

most fun uniforms you'll ever see.

:

01:08:12,345 --> 01:08:16,715

Um, and he, he dominated all summer

and I see here he is hitting three 40

:

01:08:16,725 --> 01:08:19,910

with 19 doubles, eight homers, 40 RBIs.

:

01:08:20,439 --> 01:08:21,770

So he's just dominating all season.

:

01:08:21,779 --> 01:08:22,950

He is their third baseman.

:

01:08:22,960 --> 01:08:25,800

He is a phenomenal

hitter guy is just strong

:

01:08:25,850 --> 01:08:30,899

Gary: VCU so far this season, they're 25

and 14, they're 7 and 4 in the A 10, which

:

01:08:30,899 --> 01:08:32,970

has them tied with Dayton for second.

:

01:08:33,559 --> 01:08:37,470

They're similar to the tie scenario

that we saw in the Sun Belt, they

:

01:08:37,470 --> 01:08:40,260

actually had their final game against

Dayton cancelled, so they have

:

01:08:40,260 --> 01:08:41,609

one less game than everyone else.

:

01:08:41,979 --> 01:08:42,190

St.

:

01:08:42,190 --> 01:08:47,080

Louis is in first in the 8 10 at 8 4,

Richmond is 7 5, along with Fordham

:

01:08:47,080 --> 01:08:51,010

right behind them, so a little logjam

there in the 8 10, but, I mean, they,

:

01:08:51,040 --> 01:08:54,090

I feel like they just always have a

solid program, like, they're never a

:

01:08:54,090 --> 01:08:55,830

team you're gonna go in and steamroll.

:

01:08:56,149 --> 01:08:59,800

Uh, you were talking about, like,

historically, uh, according to ODU's

:

01:08:59,809 --> 01:09:05,290

records, uh, we are 32 28 against them all

time, so pretty damn competitive series.

:

01:09:05,830 --> 01:09:08,920

Um, we're actually have a losing

record against them at home.

:

01:09:08,920 --> 01:09:13,130

We're 12 and 14 or 19 and 13

against them up at the diamond.

:

01:09:13,450 --> 01:09:17,229

Uh, I know from my days of being

in school from Oh five to Oh nine.

:

01:09:17,670 --> 01:09:21,600

This was always a big one for us when

it came to conference play, because

:

01:09:21,600 --> 01:09:23,040

we were all in the CIA together.

:

01:09:23,120 --> 01:09:26,370

We hated VCU for a number of

reasons, mainly basketball.

:

01:09:26,720 --> 01:09:29,200

Uh, but it was always

just a good environment.

:

01:09:29,520 --> 01:09:32,390

Uh, so expecting it to be a fun one.

:

01:09:32,399 --> 01:09:35,510

We get the return trip up here to

Richmond in a couple of weeks, but.

:

01:09:35,510 --> 01:09:35,645

Yeah.

:

01:09:36,055 --> 01:09:36,944

Uh, 6 p.

:

01:09:36,944 --> 01:09:37,395

m.

:

01:09:37,455 --> 01:09:42,175

game on Tuesday at the Bud

weather forecast looks amazing

:

01:09:42,175 --> 01:09:43,234

for some evening baseball.

:

01:09:43,555 --> 01:09:44,835

CB: Yeah, I know you're right.

:

01:09:44,885 --> 01:09:48,225

We actually need to feel Uh strongly

against them towards basketball

:

01:09:48,225 --> 01:09:50,975

now because they think they're

too good to play us Um, so that's

:

01:09:50,975 --> 01:09:53,365

another reason to really hate vcu.

:

01:09:53,625 --> 01:09:56,225

Uh, I am excited my buddy will flanders.

:

01:09:56,265 --> 01:10:00,155

Uh, he's a student coach with them

Uh, so i'm very excited to see is one

:

01:10:00,155 --> 01:10:03,675

of my really good friends I talked to

him all the time about baseball stuff.

:

01:10:03,675 --> 01:10:07,755

He was uh at paul d camp Uh, last

year when they helped them go to the,

:

01:10:07,755 --> 01:10:09,405

uh, the junior college world series.

:

01:10:09,855 --> 01:10:11,375

Um, and so it's exciting to see him.

:

01:10:11,375 --> 01:10:14,555

He chose to go to VCU over

coming to coach with ODU.

:

01:10:14,565 --> 01:10:17,015

So, I mean, you know, I'm just

gonna we need to make him show

:

01:10:17,015 --> 01:10:18,684

him that he made some bad choices.

:

01:10:18,885 --> 01:10:21,375

We were talking the other day about

how disgusting their uniforms look.

:

01:10:21,870 --> 01:10:25,680

Um, so need to make sure to to give will

a hard time about wearing that gross stuff

:

01:10:25,680 --> 01:10:29,590

Gary: Well, if, if he survived a season

with my buddy, Daniel Rollins down at

:

01:10:29,590 --> 01:10:34,040

Pauldy camp, uh, I guess we can give him

the excuse for the uniforms, but shout out

:

01:10:34,040 --> 01:10:36,050

to, uh, to Daniel Rollins and Pauldy camp.

:

01:10:36,050 --> 01:10:38,410

I think they're having a pretty

damn good season down there again,

:

01:10:38,830 --> 01:10:42,090

uh, and hopefully pipeline and

a couple of guys, uh, our way.

:

01:10:42,370 --> 01:10:44,450

CB: Yeah, he survived a few

years there with rollins, man.

:

01:10:44,450 --> 01:10:47,420

Rollins is a good guy He's it's

really it's neat to see what they've

:

01:10:47,420 --> 01:10:48,620

been able to build down there

:

01:10:49,755 --> 01:10:52,975

Gary: yeah, I know far too much about

that guy from playing a lot of baseball

:

01:10:52,975 --> 01:10:56,915

with him over the years, but, uh,

glad that their program is doing well.

:

01:10:56,915 --> 01:10:58,605

Glad to see him be successful.

:

01:10:58,895 --> 01:11:01,565

Uh, maybe convince him to

carry his butt up across the

:

01:11:01,565 --> 01:11:03,225

river and, come to an ODU game.

:

01:11:03,235 --> 01:11:07,434

But, uh, yeah, so going to be a great

night for baseball Tuesday night.

:

01:11:07,434 --> 01:11:08,725

So head over to the bud, enjoy it.

:

01:11:08,755 --> 01:11:13,375

I'm going to be jealous while I'm stuck

somewhere in DC for work, but, uh, I will

:

01:11:13,375 --> 01:11:15,245

be coming down this weekend at some point.

:

01:11:15,650 --> 01:11:20,090

For a very important series against

Louisiana Monroe, the fighting Warhawks.

:

01:11:20,450 --> 01:11:20,830

I think is what,

:

01:11:21,020 --> 01:11:23,309

CB: Warhawk sure why not?

:

01:11:23,410 --> 01:11:23,880

Gary: yes,

:

01:11:24,270 --> 01:11:24,900

CB: That's a name.

:

01:11:25,170 --> 01:11:27,220

I'm a lot of warhawks down in louisiana.

:

01:11:27,240 --> 01:11:27,820

All right

:

01:11:28,730 --> 01:11:30,080

Gary: they're, they are all about it.

:

01:11:30,080 --> 01:11:32,960

Well, Louisiana Monroe,

they are:

:

01:11:32,970 --> 01:11:35,650

They are six and 12 in the Sunbelt.

:

01:11:36,059 --> 01:11:37,920

Haven't had a whole lot

of good luck lately.

:

01:11:37,990 --> 01:11:41,430

Uh, they went and went on the

road to Southern Miss, uh, lost

:

01:11:41,430 --> 01:11:43,510

two out of three, but they were

able to salvage that Sunday game.

:

01:11:43,510 --> 01:11:44,710

So maybe they're feeling

a little bit better.

:

01:11:44,710 --> 01:11:46,340

They got run ruled on Friday.

:

01:11:46,895 --> 01:11:52,485

And on Saturday, uh, before that they

lost a midweek to Louisiana tech.

:

01:11:52,495 --> 01:11:53,555

Who's who's pretty good.

:

01:11:53,934 --> 01:11:57,295

Uh, but they did take two out of three

against Texas state at home prior to that.

:

01:11:57,325 --> 01:12:02,785

So, like we always say on paper, we

should sweep them, but in reality,

:

01:12:02,785 --> 01:12:05,415

this is the Sunbelt and you're going

to have to scratch and claw to get

:

01:12:05,555 --> 01:12:07,425

every game that you can from this one.

:

01:12:07,610 --> 01:12:12,630

CB: Yeah, and like I said, it really

is a series that We gotta, just go out

:

01:12:12,630 --> 01:12:18,140

Friday night, do what you gotta do, take

it pitch by pitch, at bat by at bat, win

:

01:12:18,140 --> 01:12:22,190

that game, do the exact same thing on

Saturday, win that game, do the exact same

:

01:12:22,190 --> 01:12:26,550

thing on Sunday, don't, you can't look

ahead, yeah, yes, I agree, we absolutely

:

01:12:26,550 --> 01:12:30,040

should sweep this team, this is a team,

and this is, these are, these are Three

:

01:12:30,070 --> 01:12:32,160

conference wins we can walk away with.

:

01:12:32,710 --> 01:12:35,370

Uh, but again, it comes down

to just, you got to focus on

:

01:12:35,370 --> 01:12:36,350

the exact moment you're in.

:

01:12:36,350 --> 01:12:38,470

If you're sitting there on Friday night,

thinking about we got to win the whole

:

01:12:38,470 --> 01:12:40,200

weekend, that's never going to work.

:

01:12:40,290 --> 01:12:42,770

They, you got to focus on,

we, I got to win this pitch.

:

01:12:43,210 --> 01:12:46,330

Uh, and I believe, you know, we've seen

our guys, they're, they're figuring

:

01:12:46,330 --> 01:12:50,520

out how to win as a team, but figuring

out how to have these strong at bats.

:

01:12:50,610 --> 01:12:52,830

So it all looks like it's moving

in the right direction for

:

01:12:52,830 --> 01:12:53,910

that kind of thing to happen.

:

01:12:53,910 --> 01:12:56,360

Gary: And Louisiana Monroe,

they've got some hitters.

:

01:12:56,410 --> 01:12:58,710

They are not going to

come in and just lay down.

:

01:12:58,880 --> 01:13:01,290

Bryce Blazer is without a

doubt their best hitter.

:

01:13:01,470 --> 01:13:04,100

Hitting 357 with a 940 OPS.

:

01:13:04,450 --> 01:13:06,520

Two home runs, 21 RBIs.

:

01:13:06,870 --> 01:13:07,190

And then

:

01:13:07,520 --> 01:13:08,380

CB: blazing?

:

01:13:10,740 --> 01:13:10,980

Gary: he's

:

01:13:11,410 --> 01:13:12,370

CB: is blazing.

:

01:13:13,760 --> 01:13:14,900

Gary: I hope he had a good weekend.

:

01:13:14,910 --> 01:13:16,170

Maybe that's why they lost, because it

:

01:13:16,210 --> 01:13:17,540

CB: he should have played at UAB.

:

01:13:17,559 --> 01:13:19,640

He could have been blazer on the blazers

:

01:13:19,640 --> 01:13:20,830

Gary: Oh, that would

have been too perfect.

:

01:13:20,830 --> 01:13:22,230

I wonder how much eligibility he has.

:

01:13:22,230 --> 01:13:24,630

He can hop in the transfer portal

and make that dream a reality.

:

01:13:24,750 --> 01:13:26,480

CB: Did they even get their did

they even get their baseball?

:

01:13:26,480 --> 01:13:29,230

I think they did get their baseball

team back Didn't they like they

:

01:13:29,230 --> 01:13:32,059

were gonna they stopped for like

a year and then had to restart it.

:

01:13:32,920 --> 01:13:33,640

They did something stupid

:

01:13:33,890 --> 01:13:35,440

Gary: I know they did that with football.

:

01:13:35,440 --> 01:13:37,040

I'm not sure what happened with baseball.

:

01:13:37,050 --> 01:13:37,540

CB: Who knows

:

01:13:37,780 --> 01:13:43,860

Gary: One of the other key hitters, Eason

Winfield, he's hitting 331 with a 984 OPS.

:

01:13:43,860 --> 01:13:46,170

Uh, he's got eight home runs and 23 RBIs.

:

01:13:46,170 --> 01:13:48,000

He's also stolen 13 bags.

:

01:13:48,000 --> 01:13:48,160

Yeah.

:

01:13:48,715 --> 01:13:51,635

So there's a couple other guys

that are hitting above 300 as well.

:

01:13:51,635 --> 01:13:55,005

Cody Lunsford is one, uh,

Sean Dalton Weatherby.

:

01:13:55,005 --> 01:13:56,415

So they've got some dudes that can hit.

:

01:13:56,434 --> 01:13:58,295

They've been able to put the ball in play.

:

01:13:58,565 --> 01:14:00,875

And it's going to be working

around those guys to get to

:

01:14:00,875 --> 01:14:02,645

other softer spots in the lineup.

:

01:14:02,645 --> 01:14:06,395

And just making sure, if we pitch the

way that we have been, we should have

:

01:14:06,395 --> 01:14:07,845

some pretty good success against this

:

01:14:08,150 --> 01:14:08,920

CB: yeah, they got a guy here.

:

01:14:08,920 --> 01:14:12,620

It looks like he's coming on late He

he's got less at bats and other guys,

:

01:14:12,650 --> 01:14:16,630

but he he's probably getting them now and

I I hope i'm saying his name correctly

:

01:14:16,630 --> 01:14:20,180

because it looks like michelle i'm which

i'm, you know, Depending on where he's

:

01:14:20,180 --> 01:14:24,910

from it could be your uh his name, but it

looks like michelle artzenberger Hitting

:

01:14:24,910 --> 01:14:28,920

361 11 doubles three homers 28 rbis.

:

01:14:28,920 --> 01:14:32,870

He looks like he's putting in

some great work there I forgot

:

01:14:32,870 --> 01:14:35,170

what position he plays, but I

hope I'm saying his name correct.

:

01:14:35,170 --> 01:14:39,190

I apologize though I'm not, I'm just, I

believe it's either that or it's Michael

:

01:14:39,200 --> 01:14:40,700

with a really weird pronunciation.

:

01:14:40,700 --> 01:14:44,350

Gary: It could be either way, probably

not someone you want to throw a lot of

:

01:14:44,630 --> 01:14:48,320

center cut fastballs to with that 1.

:

01:14:48,390 --> 01:14:48,980

046 OPS.

:

01:14:49,600 --> 01:14:53,930

Uh, so yeah, they've got some dudes that

could hit and, you know, we're just gonna

:

01:14:53,930 --> 01:14:55,170

have to be able to answer with that.

:

01:14:55,430 --> 01:14:58,190

And it's interesting over

on the pitching side.

:

01:14:58,490 --> 01:15:03,150

They seem to take a similar approach that

we have adopted with using openers and

:

01:15:03,150 --> 01:15:06,910

not stretching your starting guys out and

throwing a lot of different guys because.

:

01:15:07,575 --> 01:15:12,655

They only have two pitchers that have 33

or more innings this year, and like one

:

01:15:12,655 --> 01:15:17,455

is exactly 33, and the other one is 33

and two thirds, so they spread it out,

:

01:15:17,455 --> 01:15:21,275

but they've got some relievers with some,

some pretty damn good numbers, some sub

:

01:15:21,305 --> 01:15:26,775

three ERAs out there, a lot of strikeouts,

not a ton of walks, Dalton hit, which I

:

01:15:26,785 --> 01:15:30,325

don't know how much he throws, he's only

got 11 innings, but he's holding opponents

:

01:15:30,325 --> 01:15:36,900

to a 0 8 8 batting average, so, They may

not be as bad as that 6 record indicates.

:

01:15:37,070 --> 01:15:39,720

CB: Yeah, they got, I just

counted, they've got 21 different

:

01:15:39,720 --> 01:15:41,210

pitchers that appeared in a game.

:

01:15:41,230 --> 01:15:44,670

Um, I haven't counted, maybe ODU has the

same amount, I just thought their, their

:

01:15:44,670 --> 01:15:46,620

list of pitchers seemed extremely large.

:

01:15:47,005 --> 01:15:48,615

Um, so yeah, you're right.

:

01:15:48,615 --> 01:15:51,445

I mean, they have several guys

who are throwing up good seasons,

:

01:15:51,785 --> 01:15:55,335

but again, in the aggregate,

they have a six 13 TMR team.

:

01:15:55,345 --> 01:15:55,835

They are raised.

:

01:15:55,845 --> 01:15:58,205

So this is a team you should

score some runs against.

:

01:15:58,265 --> 01:16:01,595

This is a team that, you know, they've

given up, they've given up some runs.

:

01:16:01,655 --> 01:16:04,665

Um, they've got some are

under and runs, right?

:

01:16:04,665 --> 01:16:05,515

They've got over.

:

01:16:06,005 --> 01:16:07,765

About 23 unearned runs.

:

01:16:07,775 --> 01:16:12,495

So this is a team that again We could

go out we compete against yeah, they hit

:

01:16:12,495 --> 01:16:16,355

a little bit Uh, but this is these are

some guys that you should be able to go

:

01:16:16,355 --> 01:16:19,915

out and beat again They just got they

got run ruled twice this past weekend od.

:

01:16:19,925 --> 01:16:21,365

You can absolutely do that to somebody

:

01:16:21,365 --> 01:16:23,965

Gary: And if you're a team that's

not super clean defensively, you're

:

01:16:23,965 --> 01:16:25,625

playing right into our strategy, right?

:

01:16:25,625 --> 01:16:26,855

We want to get guys on base.

:

01:16:26,855 --> 01:16:27,675

We want to steal.

:

01:16:27,675 --> 01:16:30,875

We want to put guys in motion,

but all of those things.

:

01:16:30,875 --> 01:16:34,165

And you saw it with Marshall on

Saturday, when we were able to do

:

01:16:34,165 --> 01:16:37,875

those things, put a ton of pressure on

them, we were rewarded with, with runs.

:

01:16:38,075 --> 01:16:40,184

I won't say points like the

guys in the radio broadcast.

:

01:16:40,815 --> 01:16:43,385

Uh, but those are the

kinds of things you can do.

:

01:16:43,385 --> 01:16:46,095

And it's, it's just going to take

that effort of putting the ball

:

01:16:46,095 --> 01:16:49,485

in play and allowing yourselves

to put pressure on a team that has

:

01:16:49,485 --> 01:16:50,934

not been very sound defensively.

:

01:16:50,980 --> 01:16:53,800

CB: Oh, and and now that since i'm

looking at the roster here, uh barham

:

01:16:53,809 --> 01:16:55,980

white, uh, another peninsula pilot.

:

01:16:56,000 --> 01:16:59,000

He is not He's only been

four, four games for him.

:

01:16:59,000 --> 01:17:00,340

So I don't, I doubt he'll get to play.

:

01:17:00,340 --> 01:17:02,809

I don't know if they can be there

this weekend, but another, another,

:

01:17:02,809 --> 01:17:05,170

uh, peninsula pilot, it's always

nice to see those guys around.

:

01:17:05,170 --> 01:17:08,070

Gary: It's amazing how many guys in

the Sunbelt have come through like the

:

01:17:08,070 --> 01:17:12,000

Pilots or Charlottesville or somewhere

where we're seeing them in summer ball.

:

01:17:12,000 --> 01:17:12,770

It's pretty cool.

:

01:17:12,880 --> 01:17:13,450

CB: Yeah, it's pretty neat.

:

01:17:13,470 --> 01:17:13,750

I know.

:

01:17:13,750 --> 01:17:16,920

I know ULM has a kid that's going to

play for the pilots again this summer.

:

01:17:16,930 --> 01:17:18,900

Henry Garcia, very good outfielder.

:

01:17:19,309 --> 01:17:22,760

Um, I know, uh, They were looking

at him with ODU, but there were some

:

01:17:22,760 --> 01:17:25,400

questions about, you know, whether or

not he could get into school or not.

:

01:17:25,440 --> 01:17:26,020

Who knows?

:

01:17:26,350 --> 01:17:29,020

Uh, but he, so he'll be a good

ballplayer for him next couple of years.

:

01:17:29,020 --> 01:17:31,830

Gary: Well, three good ones at home.

:

01:17:32,040 --> 01:17:36,210

The forecast, keep your fingers crossed,

looks great all three days, all four

:

01:17:36,210 --> 01:17:39,230

days if you throw in Tuesday against

VCU, but it's going to be six o'clock

:

01:17:39,230 --> 01:17:44,590

Friday, four o'clock on Saturday, one

o'clock on Sunday, and it's, uh, Sunday

:

01:17:44,590 --> 01:17:46,720

is youth day and kids are on the bases.

:

01:17:46,730 --> 01:17:49,540

So Probably be a lot of good

opportunities to potentially get

:

01:17:49,559 --> 01:17:52,600

some more autographs and at least,

very least get down on the field, let

:

01:17:52,600 --> 01:17:53,910

the kids run the bases a little bit.

:

01:17:54,100 --> 01:17:56,660

So hoping to see a big crowd out there.

:

01:17:56,690 --> 01:18:01,580

Um, I think I might make Saturday,

Sunday, we will see, but a great weekend

:

01:18:01,590 --> 01:18:07,120

for baseball in Norfolk and second to

last Sunbelt series, which is crazy to

:

01:18:07,440 --> 01:18:07,840

CB: Yeah.

:

01:18:07,840 --> 01:18:09,000

I mean, you got to soak them in.

:

01:18:09,000 --> 01:18:12,390

I mean, so we've only, there's only four

weekends that you're guaranteed, you know,

:

01:18:12,390 --> 01:18:16,900

obviously the team's in position to be

in the tournament, uh, but you only got.

:

01:18:17,130 --> 01:18:20,620

You know, four weekends and

was a three more midweeks.

:

01:18:20,770 --> 01:18:23,610

So, you know, it's about 15

games left in your season.

:

01:18:23,750 --> 01:18:26,390

So now's the time to get that crunch down.

:

01:18:26,390 --> 01:18:28,555

You know, again, I was, I've been

looking at, you know, looking

:

01:18:28,555 --> 01:18:30,780

at the stats kind of after every

week and they don't move a lot.

:

01:18:30,820 --> 01:18:33,080

They're kind of, you're deep

enough in the year now where guys

:

01:18:33,080 --> 01:18:34,580

numbers don't really change a lot.

:

01:18:34,580 --> 01:18:38,890

So you kind of are who you

are, but make the best of that.

:

01:18:38,890 --> 01:18:41,770

You know, you can still move things

a little bit and just get some

:

01:18:41,770 --> 01:18:43,050

wins, move things the right way.

:

01:18:43,050 --> 01:18:46,010

Like I said, I really believe

this team is poised to.

:

01:18:46,315 --> 01:18:49,345

Add to their win total to really be

strong going into the tournament.

:

01:18:49,585 --> 01:18:52,945

And as we pointed out with as good as

the Sun Belt is if you do well in the

:

01:18:52,945 --> 01:18:55,645

tournament You could all of a sudden find

yourself playing in the big tournament

:

01:18:55,695 --> 01:18:59,025

Gary: And I'll point this out to

ODU's won five of their last seven.

:

01:18:59,515 --> 01:19:01,585

They won their last two conference series.

:

01:19:02,205 --> 01:19:05,445

If you think about where this team is

right now and what the pathway is in

:

01:19:05,445 --> 01:19:09,755

front of them versus last season, where

we were starting to really slide the wrong

:

01:19:09,755 --> 01:19:12,175

direction and bad things just got worse.

:

01:19:12,615 --> 01:19:14,995

Uh, the, the upside here is huge for ODU.

:

01:19:15,015 --> 01:19:16,305

They just need to go out and take it.

:

01:19:16,840 --> 01:19:19,260

CB: And you know, it's a great point

you bring that up because the guys

:

01:19:19,270 --> 01:19:24,480

that are still here That were here

last year are the guys who are good

:

01:19:24,559 --> 01:19:30,630

people who want to be here and want to

play ball and want to compete and the

:

01:19:30,630 --> 01:19:35,650

lessons they had to have learned from

What happened in the last year where

:

01:19:35,650 --> 01:19:39,920

you had some bad people who didn't

want to compete Bringing things down.

:

01:19:39,920 --> 01:19:41,300

It can only help them this year.

:

01:19:41,300 --> 01:19:44,570

Gary: Building that toughness

and mainly mental toughness.

:

01:19:44,570 --> 01:19:46,770

If you listen to the extra

fendings podcast, which Fenway

:

01:19:46,890 --> 01:19:47,830

talked about that a lot.

:

01:19:48,190 --> 01:19:52,600

In the last episode and this team appears

to have it, they have the resiliency.

:

01:19:52,610 --> 01:19:57,270

They are battle tested is about as well

as you can be at this point in the season.

:

01:19:57,270 --> 01:20:00,600

And all starts Tuesday, go beat VCU.

:

01:20:00,610 --> 01:20:02,260

Got to beat your rivals.

:

01:20:03,025 --> 01:20:03,995

CB: Yeah, that's one that matters.

:

01:20:04,005 --> 01:20:08,055

Like I said, it matters beating uva

even though It's hard to call it a

:

01:20:08,055 --> 01:20:10,585

rivalry because they definitely don't

consider us that and i don't blame

:

01:20:10,585 --> 01:20:12,865

them But vcu for sure is a rivalry.

:
