Intro:

Okay.

2

:

Gary: Hello, Monarch fans, and welcome

to another episode of Hudson Homers.

3

:

I am Gary, and I'm joined by my

co host as always, CB Wilkins.

4

:

CB, how are you doing

5

:

CB: Man, I am fantastic.

6

:

Let me tell you, I'm sure it's

a complete coincidence, uh, but

7

:

the time change was wonderful.

8

:

The time chain, because the weather

was just perfect this whole week.

9

:

Um, I saw baseball, you

know, ODU had five games.

10

:

I even went and saw, uh, one of

our commits playing for Cape Henry

11

:

against Grassfield on Thursday.

12

:

So it's just nothing

but wonderful weather.

13

:

Gary: baseball weather was

absolutely back this weekend.

14

:

I made it down for the

games on Friday and Sunday.

15

:

And aside from a little bit of a rain

shower in the middle of the game on

16

:

Friday, it was It was beautiful and

I was reminded on Sunday to bring

17

:

sunscreen for the future because

standing in Rally Alley, you get a

18

:

nice tan on the left side of your

face while you're watching the game.

19

:

So I've got that going for me this

20

:

CB: Yeah, this is the time of year I

just kind of let myself get burned and

21

:

then That comes summer time you throw the

sunblock on you have to get the nice tan

22

:

early when the sun's not actually that

bad It's probably terrible for my skin.

23

:

But you know people tell me I

look young so I guess i'm fine

24

:

Gary: I, uh, celebrated St.

25

:

Patty's Day with my Irish roots getting

nice and sunburned at a baseball game.

26

:

So I feel like it's a tradition.

27

:

CB: Just turning from just you

go from pale, uh pale white to

28

:

extremely red then right back to

pale white That's that's how it works

29

:

Gary: That's, that's been the cycle.

30

:

It wasn't like that when I was

a kid, but it definitely is now.

31

:

So I can't wait to Back at the bud here

in a couple of weeks for the next home

32

:

series is to show off what half of my tan

face looks like, but three and two week

33

:

this week for the Monarchs, you know,

book ended with losses, but some really,

34

:

really great baseball in between there.

35

:

Um, I think we got to start right off

the bat talking about the game that

36

:

we probably do not want to talk about.

37

:

And that was Tuesday's loss

to Princeton, 10 to eight,

38

:

not, uh, not ideal.

39

:

CB: be honest.

40

:

I mean, the word for

that one is embarrassing.

41

:

I mean, I, you know, Princeton's

division one team, but let's be real.

42

:

They're not anywhere close

to the same level as OD.

43

:

They got good guys, good

players playing hard.

44

:

And you know what?

45

:

They came out and just

played a better game.

46

:

They played very solid.

47

:

They got their hits when it was time

to get their hits and good on them.

48

:

They had just gotten beat

like 24 to 8 the day before.

49

:

Um, so good for them.

50

:

They came out and took on a,

we know a very good ODU team

51

:

and just played really well.

52

:

So, I mean, that's.

53

:

Our, our guys did not show up and I hope

it ended up being kind of a wake up call

54

:

and kind of a reality check for them.

55

:

Gary: Yeah, because that's definitely

a loss that can come back to haunt

56

:

you later if you're talking postseason

play, because that will definitely

57

:

drag down a lot of your chances to

either host or, you know, be a two

58

:

seed or a three seed, get a maybe more

favorable region or something like that.

59

:

You know, thankfully it was

non conference, but I still

60

:

think there's a drag there.

61

:

But it just seemed like our

pitching was off that day.

62

:

I mean, they ended up with 15 strikeouts,

which is good, but they gave up eight

63

:

earned runs, 12 hits, and they gave

out seven free passes through walks.

64

:

Or hit by a pitch, um, offense,

I mean, put up eight runs.

65

:

It's not a, that's not a bad day, but

I think you'd want to see a little bit

66

:

more against a team like Princeton.

67

:

CB: The offense, you know,

eight, eight runs is great.

68

:

But then in the late innings when

it was time to like, okay, we

69

:

actually came back in this game.

70

:

Um, and we have a, we have an

opportunity to hear, to, to

71

:

get some runs and go ahead.

72

:

They just couldn't quite

string stuff together.

73

:

So, you know, yeah, I mean, we,

we definitely saw the offense.

74

:

Started clicking there on Tuesday and it

kind of kept clicking up until Sunday.

75

:

Um, but you know, it overall just not

what you want to see out of, out of a game

76

:

that you really should have three errors

again, you know, just not what you want

77

:

to see out of a, a game against Princeton.

78

:

Gary: And I had it up and I was, you

know, kind of watching it on my phone.

79

:

And when we got to eight to seven

in the seventh, I was like, all

80

:

right, here we go, it's, it's time to jump

ahead and put this game away, but I mean,

81

:

Princeton came right back and got the

two run home run in the top of the ninth.

82

:

And that was kind of curtains for us.

83

:

But I think

84

:

CB: power to them.

85

:

They put up, they really played well.

86

:

They put up really good at

bats and just that was that.

87

:

I mean, you know, they're

a really well coached team.

88

:

They got Scott Bradley

has been there forever.

89

:

Um, my buddy Joe Homaker, the O.

90

:

D.

91

:

U.

92

:

Alums pigeon coach.

93

:

It was great to great to get to

hang out, talk to him for a while.

94

:

He's still teaching a class at Princeton.

95

:

So we like to say taking

the, um, take us 3.

96

:

1 GPA at O.

97

:

D.

98

:

U.

99

:

And really devaluing

the Princeton education.

100

:

Gary: I'll gladly take an ODU alum

that's teaching at Princeton that,

101

:

uh, makes me feel a little bit better.

102

:

That game did seem to serve as

a little bit of a wake up call

103

:

because they come back the next day

and they do what we expected them

104

:

to do and they won the game 12 to

105

:

CB: Yeah, that day was in 12 to 1 in seven

innings, which I guess they had decided

106

:

ahead of time in a non conference game.

107

:

You have to decide ahead of time

if you're gonna do the run rule.

108

:

And so I guess they did, which is good.

109

:

You know, at that point Princeton was

playing a lot of days and anytime you're

110

:

gonna play five games in a week, you

try to shorten the games if you can.

111

:

So they did.

112

:

They played really well.

113

:

Some pitchers who had not even

really got a lot of opportunities

114

:

or some no opportunities came out

pitch really well in that game.

115

:

So Wednesday's game was

just all around fantastic.

116

:

Gary: We just kind of jumped on him,

you know, right off the bat with

117

:

Stephen Meyer getting on with a walk.

118

:

Steals second, steals third.

119

:

Luke hits a double and we're

kind of off and running there.

120

:

Uh, Kenny LaVarie, Jackson

Tone, both with three RBI games.

121

:

Alex Boucher goes three for four.

122

:

And I saw the picture that you

put out, I think on social media

123

:

earlier today of Tyser getting hit by

124

:

a pitch and it

125

:

did look like it got

him right in the nose.

126

:

CB: was, I didn't even share the picture.

127

:

It's actually two frames before

that it hit him on the knee and then

128

:

bounced straight up and got him in

the nose and he got cut on his face.

129

:

I think because of his nose and

his sunglasses smashing into each

130

:

other and just he got cut nose.

131

:

He was bleeding pretty good

right there when it happened.

132

:

He's okay.

133

:

I mean, I, saw him yesterday,

didn't look like he really

134

:

had a cut barely on his nose.

135

:

Um, but yeah, that was just, it could

only happen to Tyser, I think, right.

136

:

Just getting hit.

137

:

I mean, how do you get hit twice by

the same pitch is pretty terrible.

138

:

Gary: Just some bad luck there with

that ball bouncing around like that.

139

:

Uh, couple good pitching notes, because

the pitching obviously improved a

140

:

ton in that second Princeton game.

141

:

Garrett Harker, gets the

win, doesn't give up any runs.

142

:

The whole pitching staff only gave

up four free passes for that entire

143

:

game, which I thought was pretty good.

144

:

It was really critical.

145

:

Uh, your trunk comes in, Ben Moore

comes in, locks it down, and then we

146

:

get the debut of Marco LaVar with two

innings pitched only marks on Hemi.

147

:

He had a walk and he hit a batter, but

other than that, looked pretty good.

148

:

CB: looked really dominant and it's not

easy to go out and, you know, I mean,

149

:

they've been playing about a month at this

point, and he hadn't gotten into a game,

150

:

you know, showing up every day and just

staying in shape and throwing bullpens.

151

:

And so it's a big deal.

152

:

And, on top of that, it's your first

ever appearance, you're nervous, you

153

:

know, he's there, he's first time

he's getting to play with his brother

154

:

there at third base, you know, so I

mean, that was a big deal for Marco.

155

:

That was, that was pretty awesome to see.

156

:

And Harker, you know, Harker

is a, he's a very good pitcher.

157

:

I had forgotten he

actually got a concussion.

158

:

I think, I think it was back in the fall.

159

:

It might've been in the spring.

160

:

I don't remember when it was, but he took

a line drive off the back of his head.

161

:

And so that's kind of been

what's kind of affected him.

162

:

He was a guy who probably.

163

:

Was looking at being a part of the weekend

rotation and still may end up being

164

:

in it, but he's working his way back.

165

:

And so it's, it's good to see.

166

:

Um, I think he's gonna start

again tomorrow against Richmond.

167

:

Um, but he, he really

looked good that day.

168

:

He came out and he actually

told me he kind of dinged up

169

:

his ankle on the first pitch.

170

:

He kind of just slipped off

the rubber a little bit.

171

:

So doing what he did, knowing that

he was pretty much pretty much

172

:

hurting every pitch he through.

173

:

Gary: Impressive performance by Garrett.

174

:

And I think that's really positive to

see that in the midweek two of guys

175

:

who are getting that opportunity and

making the most of it, but just seemed

176

:

like a different team coming out there

in that second game against Princeton.

177

:

And I know I talked to coach

Finwood after the game.

178

:

On Sunday and just kind of asked

if that was a wake up call.

179

:

And he said, you know, well, I hope so.

180

:

And I made it clear that couldn't

play any worse than that.

181

:

Uh, so you can see the

full quote at odmarcus.

182

:

com on the postgame recap,

uh, from the game yesterday.

183

:

But, uh, speaking of Marco's brother

at third, Kenny LaVarie, he is

184

:

our guest later in the program.

185

:

We're going to get to his thoughts

on his brother's pitching performance

186

:

along with, uh, a few other things and

what his season has been like so far.

187

:

Bye.

188

:

Glad to see the guys rebound in a big

way to get that because that could

189

:

have could have turned south in a hurry.

190

:

CB: Yeah.

191

:

I mean, that's exactly

what you want to do.

192

:

You say, look, we, we took it on

the chin and we, you might even

193

:

say they took him for granted.

194

:

I mean, honestly, sometimes I think

it's happened to them in years past.

195

:

They played some teams and

they took, I think it was one

196

:

week toward the end of a year.

197

:

I think it was two years ago when they

played William and Mary and BMI and

198

:

they got beaten both games by teams.

199

:

They should have obliterated.

200

:

So it's, it's one of those that, I think

it's the mark of a strong team is nothing,

201

:

you know, it's, it's a shame that they had

to get embarrassed a little bit, but then

202

:

to come back strong, uh, three days in a

row and run rule teams is pretty great.

203

:

Gary: That was definitely

an impressive bounce back.

204

:

And if you're going to get embarrassed,

I'd rather do it mid March rather than,

205

:

you know, mid May when when things start

getting a little bit tighter, but they

206

:

carried that momentum right into the game

on Friday, ripping off six in the first

207

:

inning against Georgia Southern, who.

208

:

Like I, I don't know if they're going

to be a bottom half Sunbelt team.

209

:

I think they're actually,

they're actually pretty good.

210

:

They just may not have played some

great baseball and we ambushed them

211

:

on a Friday and

212

:

CB: They're really good.

213

:

Apparently one of their better pitchers,

uh, got hurt and is out for the year.

214

:

So I think there's a little bit

of, um, a little bit of that kind

215

:

of mentally affects you as a team,

but they, they are a good team that

216

:

kid, uh, Tate, the leadoff hitter.

217

:

We held them down.

218

:

It was over four.

219

:

I think he only gave you had to

hit all weekend, but he's two

220

:

for four in the middle game.

221

:

He's a very good hitter that

didn't do much this weekend.

222

:

But that's again, more of a

testament to our pitching.

223

:

Yeah.

224

:

So he was two for 12 on the weekend.

225

:

Um, and that's not who

that kid is as a hitter.

226

:

Gary: We, we talked about him in

previewing the Georgia Southern weekend

227

:

on the last episode, talking about, you

know, he's the guy you got to get out.

228

:

He's their smart plug.

229

:

If you can get him out,

you can do good things.

230

:

And they did that, especially on Friday.

231

:

I mean, Oh, for four, uh, he's, he's

not even getting on base for you.

232

:

CB: Yeah, I mean, that's

exactly what you want.

233

:

Our pitching staff was

dominant this weekend.

234

:

I mean, to be frank, would you only

give up four runs over the weekend?

235

:

You should win all three games.

236

:

So that was our hitters just didn't

take care of them on Sunday, but they

237

:

certainly did Friday and Saturday.

238

:

I mean, they said, just get off

to six nothing start and then a

239

:

four nothing start on Saturday.

240

:

I mean, that's you couldn't ask for

much more than your top guys just

241

:

going out and just hammering them

to the point where I think we bad

242

:

and then we battered around Friday.

243

:

I think we battered around on

Saturday too on the first inning.

244

:

That's just you can ask

for much more than that.

245

:

Gary: And that's what some teams have been

able to do to us on those weekend series.

246

:

And we kind of got to flip the script

this weekend and I was really happy to

247

:

see it because you're getting up six runs

when on a weekend series when you've got

248

:

all your arms healthy and ready to go.

249

:

It's tough to overcome that

and to have that bounce back.

250

:

But I think you said it on the extra

fittings podcast with, with coach

251

:

Finwood and Pierce, uh, talking

about just put the damn ball in

252

:

play.

253

:

And you're going to put that on a shirt.

254

:

Well, I mean, that's how this started.

255

:

I mean, Kyle Edwards hits kind of a

pop fly behind first base that the

256

:

wind has some fun with and it drops in.

257

:

He's on second and then, we end up

kind of taking off from there with Luke

258

:

Waters getting an RBI single, Boucher

driving in two, uh, and then Maverick

259

:

Stallings started second base all weekend.

260

:

with a three run bomb to right center,

hit it perfectly into the chemistry

261

:

building wind tunnel and uh, yeah, six,

nothing through one pretty good start.

262

:

CB: Yeah.

263

:

Maverick's a really, really

good baseball player.

264

:

He's um, he's, I feel like in the

field a little bit struggling, but I

265

:

know, and I trust our coaches enough

to help him with those things and

266

:

he's I think now he's kind of gotten

the bat back to where he should be.

267

:

Um, like I said, had a great weekend.

268

:

He, he's a, he's a really good ballplayer

and yeah, there was a lot of, uh, just

269

:

put the ball in play this weekend.

270

:

It didn't happen as much on Sunday,

which is what happened on Sunday.

271

:

You see the results.

272

:

So that was, I was excited to see that.

273

:

I hope that does keep

being a, a theme for him.

274

:

You know what I mean?

275

:

I said on the weekend, these

guys are not big leaguers.

276

:

Again, Georgia State or Georgia

Southern, I'm sorry, Georgia Southern

277

:

has some very good ballplayer.

278

:

They made some great plays out

there, but they're not big leaguers.

279

:

There were a few that were

kind of routine plays.

280

:

They threw away.

281

:

So you put the ball in play.

282

:

These are college kids.

283

:

Make them, make them sweat.

284

:

Gary: And we've been looking

for some stability at second

285

:

base and also left field.

286

:

And we'll talk about left field in a

little bit, but I think Maverick went a

287

:

long way to put himself in the driver's

seat for starting normally at second base.

288

:

I mean, he ended up this week

going six for 15 with the home run.

289

:

Uh, he had at least one double, drove

in four runs, really just a solid

290

:

performance, and I think this is kind

of that week where you can go and grab

291

:

some of those positions playing against

the conference opponents, and I feel

292

:

like Maverick did a really good job

of staking his claim there at second.

293

:

CB: Yeah.

294

:

There's a few spots.

295

:

We've been dying for somebody

to establish themselves.

296

:

So it was, it was great to see that.

297

:

And to go back to the pitching

for a second, you know, this was

298

:

Finney kind of switch things up.

299

:

Had Jay Cassidy start the game.

300

:

Uh, and then bring hollabets and relief.

301

:

And I mean, you talk about

pushing all the right buttons.

302

:

I mean, Jay two and two thirds,

uh, only gave up one run and

303

:

looked really good doing it.

304

:

And then John hollabets came out

of the pen and looked like the

305

:

John hollabets that we all know.

306

:

I think again, he just needs that,

needs that rhythm about the bullpen, he

307

:

needs that adrenaline, you know, four

and a third innings, only no runs, one

308

:

hit, uh, no walks, five strikeouts.

309

:

I mean, that's, that's the guy

you expect John hollabets to be.

310

:

So if that's what it takes is.

311

:

There's Jay coming out and, uh, getting

up started, getting a little off balance.

312

:

Then John comes out, blows him

away, man, that's, that's a weapon.

313

:

That's something else.

314

:

Gary: Hollabacks was electric on friday.

315

:

I mean, that was kind of what we

got used to seeing of him coming out

316

:

of the pen and closing out games.

317

:

He was like that, but for four innings

and if that's the way it has to be

318

:

on fridays to get the win, I am good

with that because that is, uh, that

319

:

is a weapon and you hit the nail

on the head with pushing the right

320

:

buttons and getting the guys in spots

where they feel the most comfortable.

321

:

I was really excited to see that opener

plan Work so well with those guys

322

:

and see how that's returned to form.

323

:

Uh, cause he, I mean,

he's a fantastic pitcher.

324

:

He is just, hasn't had his best

stuff to start the year, but Hey,

325

:

no better time to start peeking

than a beginning of conference play.

326

:

CB: Yeah.

327

:

I mean, that's the guy that

had all the scouts and the, uh,

328

:

Cape Cod League excited has all

the scouts coming out Fridays.

329

:

I mean, that, that's, he's a dude,

he's a, he's a guy, I think, you

330

:

know, he's got more in his tank.

331

:

He's already out there throwing 94 to 96.

332

:

And he can hit, we know he can

hit a hundred and he's done it.

333

:

Get the, the engine revving, right.

334

:

The blood flowing the right way for him.

335

:

That's exactly, I love the move.

336

:

It was, it was great how

perfectly that worked out.

337

:

Gary: And obviously it was a little bit

shorter game because of the run rule.

338

:

But, uh, Vincent Becerra came in for that

last inning, pitched a clean one, only

339

:

needed six pitches to get three outs.

340

:

I mean, that's the model

of efficiency right

341

:

CB: Love that.

342

:

Gary: Uh, and then be able to do that

and save some other arms for later.

343

:

But, um, Had some home runs throughout

this game too, uh, which definitely

344

:

want to talk about with, with dollars

for dingers, you know, Maverick selling

345

:

is obviously hit that one in the

first, uh, then we have one from Luke

346

:

waters, one from Alex Boucher, really

not even like home run type swings.

347

:

Putting a good swing on the ball

and driving it out of the ballpark.

348

:

Uh, wind was, was helpful on

Friday too, I will say that.

349

:

CB: Yeah.

350

:

I mean, that's exactly what you want.

351

:

You know, Luke and Alex have

probably been our, our two most

352

:

consistent hitters this year.

353

:

They've been the guys that kind

of, you know, they've been around

354

:

300 and they might go up and down

between, you know, three 40 to

355

:

three 13, depending on the weekend.

356

:

Uh, but they, they, you know, pretty

consistently are getting about one

357

:

out of every three times the plate

getting a hit and they are, hitting

358

:

the ball hard and having good

swings and good stuff's happening.

359

:

And so it's just, it's really nice to

see both those guys just go out and be

360

:

the players that they are and be that,

really consistent force in the lineup.

361

:

It's good that it's just, just great.

362

:

We need that.

363

:

Gary: Yeah, absolutely.

364

:

And our dinger count now

in the year is at 14.

365

:

So we got 14 home runs

for dollars for dingers.

366

:

And then bucks for bags,

we are 42 stolen bases.

367

:

We're 42 for 49.

368

:

So still stealing bases at a great clip.

369

:

Uh, Stephen Meyer still 10 for 10 on

the season with stolen bases, which

370

:

is just ridiculous, especially since

he's stolen third a couple of times,

371

:

CB: Yeah.

372

:

I was actually trying to look through

some recent stats of years and I saw they

373

:

already have more stolen bases this year.

374

:

They did in 2019.

375

:

Um, seems unlikely that we're

going to get the team record.

376

:

Uh, team record was,

back in:

377

:

Uh, they were just running like wild

back then, but I think we're going

378

:

to, we're going to, I think by far

have the most anybody's had in years.

379

:

Um, and the single season leader.

380

:

Again, probably nobody's coming close.

381

:

Kevin Gibbs had over 40, like three

different times, all three of his years.

382

:

Uh, but in recent years, Connor

Myers in, I think 15 had 20 steals.

383

:

So I definitely think that, um,

either Luke or, or, uh, or Stephen

384

:

Meyer can, can match that 20.

385

:

So they can be kind of the, uh,

more recent ODU stone base leaders.

386

:

Gary: and Luke has been

very impressive this year.

387

:

I mean, yeah, he's, he's got three home

runs, which is tied for the team lead

388

:

is driven in 19 runs, which is also

tied for the team lead, but he's 11

389

:

for 12 stealing bases on top of that.

390

:

You can't ask for a whole lot

more from your three hole hitter

391

:

CB: And Luke is not fast.

392

:

I'm not saying that to be mean to him, but

he's not, you don't, you watch him run.

393

:

You don't think like, Oh

man, that guy is so fast.

394

:

He's just really, really smart.

395

:

He's a really, really smart,

really good baseball player.

396

:

He knows how to read things.

397

:

He knows how to take his lead

and he knows how to be quick.

398

:

Um, and so it's, it's really,

it is fun watching the guy who

399

:

is not, you know, just like, Oh

man, nobody can stop him fast.

400

:

Gary: He definitely understands

how to time a pitcher.

401

:

He motors around those bases and he puts

us in a good position for the guys down

402

:

the lineup to have good RBI potential.

403

:

And that's Really what the philosophy

is this year is put the ball in

404

:

play, get on, get over, get in.

405

:

And we saw that play out really all

week, except for, except for Sunday.

406

:

That was the only really bad

offensive day that we had.

407

:

Um, yeah, I was not able to

watch the game live on Saturday.

408

:

Um, I was out and about with some things,

but I thought that there was something

409

:

wrong with either my phone or the live

stats link, because I looked down and

410

:

it's 11 to 1 in the 7th, and I was

like, what, no way we did that 2, 2 days

411

:

in a row, kind of blew my mind there.

412

:

CB: Yeah, Saturday was fun, man.

413

:

I mean, that was, you know, I wasn't

really able to get there Friday because

414

:

of the time change and then the weather.

415

:

Uh, but Saturday, you know,

just the, I mean, there's,

416

:

we're dancing in the dugout.

417

:

We got guys doing, they all

got a bunch of haircuts.

418

:

They're all doing new

haircut celebrations.

419

:

That was a fun, fun baseball

game to be there as an ODU fan.

420

:

Um, and just seeing the guys, I, and

that's the kind of, you hope they had

421

:

bring that kind of joy, even when they're

behind, because they got to believe

422

:

themselves that they're going to be ahead.

423

:

So that you can, you can kind

of bottle that energy, man.

424

:

You're going to have something

special for the team.

425

:

Gary: And it was a similar blueprint,

you know, we didn't score 6 in the

426

:

1st, but we got 4, which I'll also

take 4, uh, but I mean, it's, it's

427

:

11 to nothing in the 5th after, 3 run

home run by Kenny LaVarie solo shot.

428

:

Yeah.

429

:

For Tyser.

430

:

And I mean, we just really took the wind

out of their sails on that, that Saturday.

431

:

And I'm glad the guys got to enjoy

it with their fancy new haircuts.

432

:

Hopefully those hats stay on.

433

:

Um, but just a lot of fun there.

434

:

And I mean, Kenny LaVarie goes two

for three on the day, drives in five

435

:

runs with a home run and a double.

436

:

He has absolutely come on here in the last

two weeks, and I think we're all very glad

437

:

to see him getting that bat hot again.

438

:

CB: Yeah.

439

:

Kenny is really, he's turned around and

he was definitely having those kind of

440

:

in between at bats where he, you know, he

was taking the good pitches and swinging

441

:

to the bad pitches and chasing things.

442

:

And now he's locked in.

443

:

You can see he's waiting for the

ball and he's driving the ball.

444

:

I mean, even, even when he's making

outs, they're really good outs.

445

:

Gary: Yeah.

446

:

Kenny has really come on here

in the last couple of weeks.

447

:

I mean, this week alone, he's

five for 14 with a home run,

448

:

drove in nine runs, drew five

449

:

walks, really just having quality of bats.

450

:

and the pitching again on

Saturday was fantastic.

451

:

I don't know if we did technically an

opener approach and we kind of did.

452

:

Dylan Brown got the start,

went three and two thirds.

453

:

Uh, give him no earned

runs and just one hit.

454

:

Um, you know, I thought

he, he threw pretty well.

455

:

Uh, then, Kellen comes in with

the Raptor and gets the strike out

456

:

of the only batter that he faced.

457

:

And Pond and Ransom clean

it up on the back end.

458

:

Just end to end great

pitching again on Saturday.

459

:

CB: Yeah, it was great.

460

:

I don't know that Dylan was necessarily an

opener, um, but he kind of acted that way.

461

:

I, I still personally would like to

462

:

see him throw a little bit more in that

game, but he didn't have his best stuff.

463

:

I'll be honest, Dylan, the fact

that he threw three and two

464

:

thirds and gave up no runs.

465

:

Really tells you how he was fighting

through because I think he didn't

466

:

have his best stuff and pond did.

467

:

not have his best stuff.

468

:

Um, and you know, the pond two and

two thirds only gave up one run.

469

:

Uh, and so both of them really

470

:

were fighting it.

471

:

You could tell they just, neither

one of them really was able

472

:

to throw it exactly where they

wanted, exactly how they wanted.

473

:

Um, but again, they got through it.

474

:

And then Kellen,

475

:

like I said, came with the Raptor

476

:

and got his guy and Lincoln came

in, you know, to close the game.

477

:

He got himself the save

in the 11 to one game.

478

:

No, he didn't.

479

:

Uh, but he,

480

:

you know, came in, did what he needed to

481

:

do.

482

:

And so that you know, that was a great

performance, especially for the fact

483

:

that the guys were not dominating.

484

:

I mean, you can see in

485

:

seven innings, we only

had six strikeouts, right?

486

:

Um, and three walks and three hit by

487

:

pitch, you know, so it was

not, it was dominant pitching.

488

:

That was not dominant, which is

489

:

Gary: Yeah, they were able

to avoid that big blow

490

:

up meltdown kind of ending where

they give up three, four, five runs.

491

:

They were able to get out of the jams,

both Dylan and Brandon, later in the game.

492

:

But I mean, how about Kellen

493

:

Davis?

494

:

I mean, coming on there

495

:

in the fourth, three

pitches gets the strikeout.

496

:

I mean, back to the

dugout, your day is over.

497

:

Pretty, uh, pretty good stuff there from,

498

:

from the Raptor, man.

499

:

CB: I mean, he's up to, 12.

500

:

I'm sorry.

501

:

Nine appearances, uh, in 20

games, he's only thrown 5.

502

:

1 So, you know, he's barely

getting, you know, an out each

503

:

time, but he's got nine he is,

He's just doing great as it's again

504

:

for a guy, he's a retro sophomore.

505

:

He's been around, you know,

didn't pitch at all his first

506

:

year, barely pitched last year.

507

:

I mean, he only got what, like

four games and they were kind

508

:

of toward the end of the year.

509

:

So, The guy who's just

worked, worked, worked.

510

:

I mean, maybe the most athletic

kid on the team, and, you know,

511

:

having a specialist who can come

in and get an out, we need it out.

512

:

That's a big deal.

513

:

Gary: Yeah.

514

:

It's that stopper role, I think

is what they call it now in the

515

:

pros, where you can just bring

them in, get the out, get out of

516

:

the inning and go from there.

517

:

Yeah.

518

:

And he's, whether he's a stopper or set up

519

:

closer, it doesn't matter.

520

:

I mean, he's, he's coming in and

doing some great work on the mound.

521

:

CB: Well, that was the role they, they've

actually, it's not, you can't do it.

522

:

The big leagues anymore.

523

:

Cause in the big leagues you

524

:

have to face three guys, but that was,

they were calling it, uh, if you're a

525

:

left handed, it was a loogie, a lefty one

out guy and a Ruby, a righty one out guy.

526

:

He's, he's a real, he's

a rookie at this point.

527

:

Gary: Well, I guess we can still,

uh, still use that in college,

528

:

at least to end an inning anyway.

529

:

Uh, but Yeah, just, just another great

performance in the pitching staff.

530

:

Good to see them shake off a bad

performance on Tuesday against Princeton

531

:

and come back to really give four strong.

532

:

appearances in a row.

533

:

CB: And, you know, going to the

hitting side again, talking about a

534

:

guy who's been here, it's his third

535

:

year here, uh, and it's had to put a lot

of work in to get himself on the field.

536

:

How about Bryce Jones getting his

first start of his college career after

537

:

getting his first hit the night before?

538

:

Gary: It was great to see that.

539

:

He was kind of the dark horse there to

go into left field, got inserted into

540

:

the game about halfway through on friday.

541

:

Uh, ends up being the walk off

run to clinch the run rule.

542

:

And then, you know, casual

two double day on Saturday

543

:

CB: is a kid.

544

:

He red shirt his freshman year,

Uh, barely played last year.

545

:

I mean, I think he maybe got

three or four at bats this year

546

:

before Friday, before this weekend

had maybe three or four at bats.

547

:

I don't know if you've had that many, but

I had two and I got the couple of games.

548

:

Yeah.

549

:

and then all of a sudden gets

to start on, uh, Saturday

550

:

and Sunday and had three hits

over the weekend, two doubles.

551

:

I mean, again, great kid.

552

:

he's one of those kids.

553

:

He's right there with Cali words.

554

:

I've been watching him play since He's

555

:

about 14, just a phenomenal kid,

556

:

really talented ball player.

557

:

it's, it's amazing getting

to see him get a chance to

558

:

Gary: and coach Finwood echoed those

statements after the game on Sunday.

559

:

Just talking about, you know, he's

a veteran guy that hasn't played a

560

:

ton since he's been here, but he's

been in the program for three years.

561

:

He understands.

562

:

What they're looking for.

563

:

Great kid, fantastic

teammate, all of those things.

564

:

Uh, so it kind of

565

:

seems like left field, maybe his to

lose at this point, the very least is

566

:

in the driver's seat to take over on a

full time basis, but good to see that.

567

:

I know I talked to his dad a good bit

in Raleigh alley during every game.

568

:

So excited to see him.

569

:

I think his, uh, his mom and

I believe his girlfriend were

570

:

there in Raleigh alley as well.

571

:

Sorry if I got you in trouble there.

572

:

Um, They were, they were excited

to see him get in the game, get

573

:

on base, and of course score

574

:

what ended up being the, the

walk-off run there on, on Friday.

575

:

So just good to see these guys start

to emerge and, and take advantage of

576

:

those opportunities when they are put

into the game to potentially get them

577

:

more opportunities down the road.

578

:

CB: You know, Bryce is exactly the

kind of guy that you want on a college

579

:

team.

580

:

Uh, like I said, it's his third

year in the program, so he's a, he's

581

:

a junior, um, baseball sophomore.

582

:

But

583

:

he, you know, he was coming to the

ballpark every single day, particularly

584

:

his first year red shirting, knowing like,

I'm not going to play like he's, he's

585

:

walking up like he's, I'm sure he probably

doesn't even check the lineup most days.

586

:

you know, Like a best, I might get

the pinch run at the end of the game.

587

:

I might get to come out and

play the outfield at the

588

:

end of the, game, maybe, um, but

he showed up every single day.

589

:

I mean, if you saw Bryce every day, you

you, think he was the starting, you know,

590

:

left fielder batting third every day.

591

:

Like he is a kid that just shows

592

:

up has a ton of energy.

593

:

He loves, very clear.

594

:

He loves his

595

:

teammates.

596

:

It's very clear.

597

:

He loves baseball.

598

:

And, you know, having those kind of guy,

I mean, John Keane, who is our current

599

:

volunteer coach, when he was on the

team as both a catcher and a pitcher,

600

:

you know, he was that know, showing

up every day, you're there for your

601

:

teammates, you're there to bring energy.

602

:

you know, you're not one of

these guys like, well, I'm not

603

:

playing, so I'm going to pout,

I'm going to be an energy vampire.

604

:

It's

605

:

like, no, I mean, having these

guys that are just really good

606

:

teammates, and that's a huge thing.

607

:

and so that's the kind

of guys everybody roots

608

:

Gary: And you could see the dugout

reaction when he got his hits,

609

:

uh, especially on, on Friday.

610

:

They were excited for.

611

:

him.

612

:

And you can see that that

being a good teammate showing

613

:

through there very clearly.

614

:

CB: Yeah.

615

:

It's, I mean, It's, It's it's I would

love nothing more than to see him, uh,

616

:

take a choke hold on left field and

then just dominate the rest of the year.

617

:

Gary: Yeah, that him and Maverick.

618

:

And then, uh, you know, another

kind of adjustment, very subtle

619

:

one that we saw over the weekend is

that Evan Holman was behind the dish

620

:

for all three of these conference games.

621

:

And according to coach Finwood after the

game, that is the plan going forward for

622

:

conference play where Evan is going to.

623

:

Get the start behind the dish

for all three of those games.

624

:

I mean, just what he's able to bring

to the table defensively, how he

625

:

manages a game, um, and just the

626

:

kind of his presence back there, I

think has, is helpful for the pitchers

627

:

and everyone else, but expect to

see him in that starting role, on

628

:

the weekend series moving forward

629

:

CB: You know, I love seeing that you know,

it's funny in your writeup, uh, I kind

630

:

of, I kind of forget because Evan came

from a Juco, but he's only a sophomore.

631

:

He only played one year at the Juco

632

:

before coming here.

633

:

Um, and so You forget, he is a,

634

:

little younger than you think

of junior college guys and but

635

:

he, you're right.

636

:

I mean, just what he provides you

on defense alone is worthwhile.

637

:

And then

638

:

he's been.

639

:

Really showing good with plate.

640

:

You know, He's, he's a, when he stays

within himself and just tries know,

641

:

make contact, put the ball in play.

642

:

He is a very, very good hitter.

643

:

He's had some good timely hits.

644

:

He's been driving the

ball a little bit more.

645

:

So it's, I'm all for seeing Evan

get catch every day on the weekends.

646

:

Gary: we see him in that cleanup spot,

batting forth between waters and Boucher.

647

:

which is a pretty good spot to

hit with that guy in front of you.

648

:

And then the other guys up in the

lineup and then some good bats

649

:

behind you, the Boucher, LaVarie,

and then Tyser and Stallings.

650

:

I mean, that's a good spot to be in, and I

651

:

think there was a noticeable difference.

652

:

defensively behind the dish

this weekend with him there.

653

:

CB: Yeah.

654

:

And he's a switch hitter too.

655

:

So he can provide that.

656

:

They kind of go righty lefty, you know,

Edwards, Meyer waters, Holman switch

657

:

hitter, Boucher, LaVarie, then Tyson.

658

:

It's more or less righty

lefty all the way through.

659

:

So it's kind of hard for another team

to bring in, you know, a lefty to face

660

:

guys because then, all right, fine.

661

:

You might get our lefty, but

then this guy's going to come

662

:

up right handed right after

663

:

Gary: and we just need to

make sure there's no double

664

:

headers in the conference play.

665

:

Like if we can keep it one

game per day, we're good.

666

:

Cause I, you.

667

:

know, Evan is a, is a tough kid And he

would probably, you know, catch for all

668

:

18 in one day, but we could avoid that.

669

:

I think that would be ideal.

670

:

CB: mean, I most everyone wants to

avoid a double header on a weekend,

671

:

no matter what, but that, that's

definitely a even more incentive for us.

672

:

Gary: Absolutely.

673

:

Well, we're going to jump

down to the game on Sunday.

674

:

Uh, Georgia Southern was able to salvage

a game from the series with a 2 1 victory.

675

:

Another great pitching performance, just

the hitting was not quite there on Sunday.

676

:

CB: You know, Ben Moore

677

:

looked phenomenal.

678

:

Um, he started the game.

679

:

I, I'd have to assume whatever kind

of injury, I think he had, I think

680

:

it was saying it was a groin injury.

681

:

Um, whatever he had going on pretty clear.

682

:

He looked, looks healthy.

683

:

I mean, he, he looked

great to start the game.

684

:

Uh, Bailey Mattel, I came out, uh,

it looked phenomenal again, Jacob

685

:

Gomez, three innings scoreless

686

:

to finish it.

687

:

you know, The only Trent had a little

hiccup, he gave up a two run homer.

688

:

It's like, okay, that happens.

689

:

You know, I mean, I'm sure he's still

feeling some kind of effect from a thumb.

690

:

Uh, you can tell he didn't

quite look comfortable, but

691

:

he still looked pretty good.

692

:

Um, and so, you know, you give

a bit, you have a two run Homer.

693

:

Okay.

694

:

That happens.

695

:

You can't lose a game two to one.

696

:

That's, That's,

697

:

not on the picture that

gave up a home run.

698

:

That's on the offense.

699

:

Just didn't do it on

700

:

Gary: Yeah, and the home run he gave

up wasn't like just some towering shot

701

:

to right, like it got some wind help

and it snuck over the fence and it was

702

:

a home run, but like you said, given

up two runs in nine innings, You you're

703

:

going to win most of those games if

that's all your pitching staff gives up

704

:

CB: Yeah.

705

:

I mean, I'll, I'll take, uh,

four runs over the weekend and

706

:

expect to be sweeping every week.

707

:

Um, so it's, that's just

a fluke that that happens.

708

:

That was one.

709

:

I was, my mom always, uh, gets,

uh, gets frustrated when the

710

:

team scores too many runs.

711

:

She's like, well, they got to

save some of those for later.

712

:

It's like, mom, that's, that's the crazy,

because he did it three days in a row.

713

:

I think she actually didn't say it about

714

:

Gary: Yeah.

715

:

I think someone responded to me on

Twitter and said, the bats are tired.

716

:

Geez, give them a break.

717

:

But I do want to give credit

to Georgia Southern and their

718

:

starting pitcher on Sunday, Typhus.

719

:

CB: yeah.

720

:

Oh man.

721

:

Gary: I mean, he was great.

722

:

Seven innings pitch, no earned

runs, gave up just four hits.

723

:

Uh, the one run that did

come in was unearned, six

724

:

strikeouts, one walk,

Uh, through 93 pitches.

725

:

And they kept him in there.

726

:

Uh, to finish out that last inning

when I thought that they were going

727

:

to make a move because his pitch count

was already up there in the nineties,

728

:

we got a double off the wall, to

put a runner in scoring position.

729

:

I believe it was Maverick who

hit the double and that was

730

:

close to being a home run itself.

731

:

Um.

732

:

And then they pinch hit Rowan

Massey for Bryce Jones to get

733

:

the matchup that they wanted.

734

:

and Rowan hit an absolute laser.

735

:

I mean, a screaming line drive.

736

:

It just happened to be

right at the shortstop.

737

:

CB: It wasn't right, The shortstop,

the shortstop had to jump for me.

738

:

He was, he got all the air in the world to

739

:

get that ball.

740

:

That was just, I mean, that was a pure,

you know, the guy made a great play.

741

:

Uh, that's phenomenal.

742

:

And Rowan

743

:

really, he, he really went

out and got that ball.

744

:

and still hit it hard.

745

:

And

746

:

just, that's just, that's just how they

sometimes used to have the best luck

747

:

Gary: Yeah, I mean, you know, a foot

left, a foot right, a foot higher,

748

:

and that's, that's in the gap.

749

:

And now we've tied the game and

we've got a runner on second.

750

:

So I thought that was a good approach in

a pinch hit spot there to come up there

751

:

and jump on a pitcher who was, getting up

there in pitch count up in the nineties,

752

:

finally getting a little bit, a little bit

loose, leaving some stuff over the plate

753

:

And he jumped on it just uh, unfortunately

could not fall in for him there.

754

:

CB: Yeah.

755

:

I mean, that's one where sometimes

that's just how baseball works.

756

:

I mean,

757

:

you, you.

758

:

put the exact right guy batting

in the exact right time.

759

:

he hit the ball.

760

:

Great.

761

:

And it just

762

:

happened to get caught.

763

:

That's the way baseball is sometimes

is that you can do everything well.

764

:

it just didn't work out.

765

:

I mean, it's like, all

right, that's, that's,

766

:

baseball.

767

:

Gary: uh,

768

:

CB: And there's a relief pitcher.

769

:

Uh, the kid Joey

770

:

White,

771

:

uh, fits last two innings.

772

:

He did great too.

773

:

So, I mean, they're, they really did

have some phenomenal pitching for them on

774

:

Gary: I was behind home plate for the last

775

:

three innings of that game

and watching, uh, Joey white

776

:

pitch.

777

:

I mean, he's got some pretty nasty stuff.

778

:

Like he was able to

just basically backdoor.

779

:

On left-handed hitters to get that

breaking ball in for a strike and

780

:

before you knew it, it was oh two

and you didn't know what was coming.

781

:

A lot of good late break.

782

:

Um, definitely had a great day

783

:

and.

784

:

I guess they were the same.

785

:

Some of their pitching

from Friday And Saturday

786

:

because they were not in competitive

games and roll out some of their

787

:

top arms, for that, for that

final game on Sunday to steal it.

788

:

But we actually talked about Ty Fisher

on the preview last week that he was

789

:

the Sunday guy didn't have the best ERA.

790

:

But had the lowest batting average

against of all three starters.

791

:

And we absolutely saw that play

out with, you know, only four

792

:

hits over seven innings for him.

793

:

CB: mean, yeah, I'm with you.

794

:

I figured whoever came out of the

bullpen was gonna be their best

795

:

relief guy because they didn't need

to use them Friday or Saturday.

796

:

Yeah.

797

:

Ty Fisher, he, uh, I took a few pictures

and you get a good idea of what their

798

:

delivery looks like.

799

:

And he, he's got a weird delivery.

800

:

I'm sure

801

:

it looks odd coming to the

802

:

Gary: Yeah, it's, everything

has run in late break.

803

:

And it, I was glad that I was just

standing behind the fence and not

804

:

trying to hit that because I would

have absolutely embarrassed myself.

805

:

But I'll gladly take two out of three.

806

:

I mean, we can do that

every weekend series.

807

:

We're in great shape.

808

:

CB: You take two out of three, every

conference series would be 20 and 10

809

:

conference and probably be sitting pretty.

810

:

Uh, so I'll take it, you know,

obviously you'd like to get the

811

:

sweep, but it's hard to sweep.

812

:

I think there were two

of them this weekend.

813

:

Um, even even Coastal Carolina came

in and they lost one to JMU, you

814

:

know, so it's It's not easy to sweep

815

:

Gary: Yeah.

816

:

Southern Miss got a sweep.

817

:

They're three and Oh, somewhat

of a controversial sweep.

818

:

Cause I think one game probably should

have gone to Marshall, but there was a.

819

:

A play at the plate involving

a catcher blocking something

820

:

and it got overturned and the

821

:

game was over.

822

:

and

823

:

then Georgia State swept South Alabama,

so those are the only two 3 0 teams.

824

:

Everybody else is either 1 2,

and of course South Alabama and

825

:

Marshall are 0 3, but I mean it's,

it's going to be pretty tight in

826

:

those standings I think throughout the

whole season based on what I've seen.

827

:

CB: It'll it'll work itself out in

the end But I think you're right.

828

:

It's just every every single game

is a rock fight in conference

829

:

All right, fans coming up next.

830

:

We have our interview with Kenny

Lavaris, who you've heard a good

831

:

bit about so far in today's episode.

832

:

And then we'll give you a quick preview

of the mid-week game against Richmond.

833

:

And then the weekend road series

against the raging Cajuns.

834

:

Thanks for listening and stay tuned.

835

:

Interview: Welcome back to

the Hudson homers podcast.

836

:

We are lucky to be joined today

by old dominion baseball, starting

837

:

third baseman, Kenny LaVarie.

838

:

Kenny, thanks so much

for jumping on with us.

839

:

No problem.

840

:

Thanks for having me.

841

:

Yeah.

842

:

Well, you come off a pretty impressive

weekend, taking two out of three from

843

:

Georgia Southern, getting run rule

victories of all things on Friday

844

:

and Saturday, uh, how are the guys

feeling coming off the weekend?

845

:

Really good.

846

:

I think it's just, it was a good

way for us to get our feet wet into

847

:

Sunbelt play with a whole bunch of

new guys this year who haven't, um,

848

:

maybe experienced Sunbelt baseball yet.

849

:

So we got our feet wet and we

had a pretty good time doing it.

850

:

For you personally, you

had a crazy good week.

851

:

I think I was putting all

your stats together and it

852

:

was, it was something dumb.

853

:

I'll tell you in terms of stats.

854

:

But, uh, you know, was there anything

particular that changed with your process

855

:

this week, or it was just kind of things

finally coming together, seeing the

856

:

ball well and having a good at bats.

857

:

I think just sticking to it.

858

:

I mean, obviously I got off to a little

slower start than I would have liked.

859

:

Um, my worst in four years here,

but, um, just knowing that I'm

860

:

able to do this, I've done it

for three years prior to this.

861

:

So just stick into what I know works

and trusting that eventually it'll

862

:

come around and it's starting to now.

863

:

Of course, we had the, uh, the big time,

you know, your brother Marco got on

864

:

the field for the first time this week.

865

:

Yeah, that was awesome.

866

:

I mean, this was the first time we've

ever got to play competitive together.

867

:

We play a little league and stuff like

that, but senior year of high school

868

:

would have been our first real chance to,

and then COVID took that away from us.

869

:

So getting to play with them for

the first time in a game that meant

870

:

something because we obviously we

did it in the fall a bunch, but it

871

:

was just a really cool moment for me.

872

:

He threw pretty well too, two

scoreless innings to kind of close out

873

:

that second game against Princeton.

874

:

He looked pretty good up there.

875

:

So I have to ask, have you all gone

head to head since you've been at ODU?

876

:

We have.

877

:

I think I'm 0 for 1 with two walks.

878

:

He got me to pop out and

then he walked me twice.

879

:

So I guess he has my number.

880

:

The on base percentage there

is still pretty, pretty solid.

881

:

We got to keep an update on those

stats, though, if you guys continue

882

:

to match up throughout the year.

883

:

Yeah, yeah.

884

:

Started the week in a pretty rough

way, dropping the game to Princeton.

885

:

I know the bats were going,

the pitching not so much.

886

:

Yeah.

887

:

What was the feeling within the team and

the leadership of getting guys kind of.

888

:

Letting that be the wake up call

for them to turn around and really

889

:

just have a great rest of the week.

890

:

I think it's just, I mean,

first of all, let me say this.

891

:

The pitching wasn't fully the issue.

892

:

Yeah, we didn't pitch as well as

we could have, but we didn't play

893

:

as good defense as we could have.

894

:

We had a few errors in that

game that gave them a few more

895

:

runs than they should have had.

896

:

And if we don't make those,

we probably win the game.

897

:

So, it wasn't fully on the pitching.

898

:

But I think it is a good wake up

call just for the guys to know

899

:

that anyone could beat us on any

given day if we don't play well.

900

:

And when we do play well, we could

be anyone, uh, on any given day.

901

:

Yeah, you definitely showed that by

bouncing back the next day and beating

902

:

Princeton pretty soundly there.

903

:

And then of course, what you did

to a really good Georgia Southern

904

:

team on Friday and Saturday.

905

:

Like I was saying, all right,

let's take two out of three.

906

:

Never in my wildest dreams.

907

:

I think it'd be two 11,

one run rule victories.

908

:

Cause they're.

909

:

They got some dudes that can hit.

910

:

They got some arms, like they're,

they're not going to finish in

911

:

the lower half of the Sunbelt.

912

:

No, not at all.

913

:

They've played a pretty

tough schedule too.

914

:

So far, um, they've played some

good teams and had some good games.

915

:

So we just came out and played well.

916

:

And like I said, that shows that we can

be anyone when we decide to play well.

917

:

Kenny, your mom shared a picture that I

en from a camp at ODU back in:

918

:

Um, so I guess you were probably about

to go into your senior year, maybe,

919

:

or maybe you're about to go into your

junior year, but it was you and Marco.

920

:

You were about the pitch.

921

:

Marco's giving you the ball.

922

:

And she shared that along

with the picture that I took.

923

:

This week of uh, you give a mark of the

ball where he's about to go to pitch.

924

:

I just thought that was so cool I

didn't remember taking that picture.

925

:

Yeah, that is pretty cool how

the roles have reversed, huh?

926

:

That was that was neat.

927

:

I'm glad you guys get to play together.

928

:

So that's a big deal We got and you

and uh, you and marco and then um, alex

929

:

and jacob gomez get to play together.

930

:

It's always fun Oh, it's really cool to

see the brothers get to play together.

931

:

Yeah, it's awesome.

932

:

I mean, it's awesome for all of us.

933

:

Just especially with them being young,

um, showing them the way and showing them

934

:

the way things are supposed to be done.

935

:

And they can, they can learn

from us older brothers.

936

:

Now he's, he's a lot like you

when you first got to ODU.

937

:

He's real quiet.

938

:

Is he like, is he always like that or

is he kind of annoying little brother?

939

:

No, he's, he's quiet.

940

:

Um, maybe not as quiet as he is at the

field, but he's a relatively quiet kid.

941

:

We asked Jacob about that earlier.

942

:

It sounds like it's a good thing

that they split the brothers up.

943

:

So you all aren't living together.

944

:

Yeah.

945

:

Yeah.

946

:

I think that was intentional.

947

:

That makes a lot of sense.

948

:

Kind of let them pave their own way a

little bit, but also little brothers,

949

:

not bothering you all the time.

950

:

Ask you questions about stuff.

951

:

Yeah.

952

:

Yeah.

953

:

I mean, we lived together for 18 years.

954

:

I think we can do three years without it.

955

:

Four years without it.

956

:

I think, uh, I think

you'll be all right there.

957

:

We also talked to Jake and we had him

on, uh, beginning of the season about how

958

:

he kind of felt a lot of that 2021 team

vibes from this team in terms of chemistry

959

:

and kind of everyone on the right track.

960

:

Did you get those same vibes preseason

and how's that playing out now?

961

:

Yeah, I think, I think so.

962

:

Um, maybe from a chemistry standpoint, but

this team is not, Like that team in the

963

:

sense of that team had a lot of homers.

964

:

This team's better at playing baseball.

965

:

I think than that team was that team.

966

:

Um, don't get me wrong.

967

:

We were really good at playing baseball,

but we did live and die by the home run.

968

:

I think a little bit that year

and it worked out for us that

969

:

year, but I think this year it's

a little bit more of a sustainable

970

:

brand of baseball that we play.

971

:

Yeah, you can definitely see

that coming through, especially

972

:

this week where the bats started

clicking a little bit that it's.

973

:

You know, you guys can produce some

runs when you really get things going.

974

:

I think this team has a

chance to be really good.

975

:

We pitched the ball really well.

976

:

Our pitching has been

amazing to start the year.

977

:

We play pretty good defense.

978

:

So we keep having offensive

days like we did this weekend.

979

:

We're going to be pretty good.

980

:

But speaking of pitching, we ever

going to see you on the mound?

981

:

I mean, you know, I'm getting ready.

982

:

I'm getting close.

983

:

I mean, I've been on

the mound a little bit.

984

:

Um, the last few weeks have been

hard because we played Tuesday.

985

:

We're supposed to play Tuesday

Wednesday against William and Mary.

986

:

So that was five games in a week.

987

:

We played Tuesday,

Wednesday against Princeton.

988

:

It was a little bit harder for me to get

off the mound, but I did throw Thursday.

989

:

I threw a bullpen about a week and

a half ago, so I'm getting that.

990

:

I don't know.

991

:

I don't know where they're going to

use me with this staff we got, cause

992

:

we're pretty, pretty dang good, but, um,

I'm going to be ready if they need me.

993

:

I was going to say, it's tough to get time

on the mound with this pitching staff.

994

:

Cause it feels like you just

keep trotting out lefty getting

995

:

strikeouts, lefty getting strikeouts,

righty getting strikeouts.

996

:

I mean, that's.

997

:

It's got to feel pretty good as a

position player, though, to know

998

:

that your pitchers can back you up.

999

:

You get in those one, two run leads

where you've got those locked out guys.

:

00:41:54,708 --> 00:41:56,248

I think that that's important for us.

:

00:41:56,248 --> 00:41:59,808

We don't need to score 10 runs

a game to win every night.

:

00:41:59,808 --> 00:42:02,058

I mean, there's going to be the

days that we do, and they're

:

00:42:02,058 --> 00:42:03,178

still not going to let up runs.

:

00:42:03,178 --> 00:42:07,318

Like we saw this weekend, we won two

games, 11 1, and then the one game that we

:

00:42:07,318 --> 00:42:09,348

didn't, they still only gave up two runs.

:

00:42:09,698 --> 00:42:11,418

So our staff is pretty, pretty good.

:

00:42:11,458 --> 00:42:13,048

Yeah, definitely some great arms on it.

:

00:42:13,088 --> 00:42:15,268

We had Jay Cassaday on a couple weeks ago.

:

00:42:15,643 --> 00:42:18,453

Talking to him and he kept talking about

starting pitching, starting pitching.

:

00:42:18,683 --> 00:42:21,933

Then he actually got to start kind

of in that opener role on Friday.

:

00:42:21,933 --> 00:42:25,293

I thought that was pretty cool and set

things up pretty well for a hollabacks

:

00:42:25,333 --> 00:42:26,483

the rest of the day on Friday.

:

00:42:26,533 --> 00:42:26,703

Yeah.

:

00:42:26,703 --> 00:42:28,233

I think Jay's a great guy for that role.

:

00:42:28,243 --> 00:42:28,853

He really.

:

00:42:29,233 --> 00:42:32,273

He's a veteran guy, doesn't let a lot

of stuff bother him, and he did a great

:

00:42:32,273 --> 00:42:36,933

job easing us into the game on Friday

night and letting us, like, get into the

:

00:42:36,933 --> 00:42:39,323

game before we gave the ball to Johnny.

:

00:42:39,423 --> 00:42:42,643

Alright, now we're, we're gonna ask

everyone that comes on the podcast

:

00:42:42,673 --> 00:42:46,118

this question, so you're not the

first, you won't be the last, but We

:

00:42:46,118 --> 00:42:49,958

know that the NCAA college football

video game is coming out this summer.

:

00:42:50,158 --> 00:42:53,178

It's a long way to return for

guys like me who played a ton

:

00:42:53,458 --> 00:42:54,678

in college and afterwards.

:

00:42:55,078 --> 00:42:57,538

But I was also a big fan of

the baseball version of that,

:

00:42:57,558 --> 00:42:58,678

the college baseball game.

:

00:42:59,978 --> 00:43:03,308

If at some point in the future,

the college baseball game comes

:

00:43:03,308 --> 00:43:08,718

back and you're on a roster, what

is your overall rating and would

:

00:43:08,718 --> 00:43:11,938

you just absolutely dominate the

guys on your team playing that?

:

00:43:12,928 --> 00:43:16,208

I don't, yeah, I think I'm not really

much of a video game player, but the

:

00:43:16,208 --> 00:43:17,698

games I do play are sports games.

:

00:43:17,708 --> 00:43:19,308

So I think I'd be good.

:

00:43:19,308 --> 00:43:19,738

I don't know.

:

00:43:19,738 --> 00:43:21,688

I would like to be maybe

somewhere around 90.

:

00:43:24,058 --> 00:43:25,178

I feel like it's a fair rating.

:

00:43:25,218 --> 00:43:25,638

I like that.

:

00:43:25,638 --> 00:43:27,998

I like that little push the power

number up a little bit, I think.

:

00:43:27,998 --> 00:43:28,398

Yeah.

:

00:43:28,708 --> 00:43:28,978

Yeah.

:

00:43:28,978 --> 00:43:30,048

What's the arm rating?

:

00:43:30,188 --> 00:43:31,118

Uh, 99.

:

00:43:31,308 --> 00:43:33,118

Yeah, I was going to say,

it's got to be 99, right?

:

00:43:33,458 --> 00:43:34,208

I got a plus arm.

:

00:43:34,598 --> 00:43:35,038

Yeah.

:

00:43:37,588 --> 00:43:38,048

Oh, I love it.

:

00:43:38,128 --> 00:43:40,348

I know on MLB The Show, you

can do the two way player.

:

00:43:40,348 --> 00:43:42,318

So, I mean, you're already

set up and primed for that.

:

00:43:42,318 --> 00:43:44,448

You can be the first one in

the college game to do it.

:

00:43:44,448 --> 00:43:46,918

Yeah, but I'm like a fake two

way, because I do it all, but

:

00:43:46,918 --> 00:43:48,328

I haven't really done it yet.

:

00:43:48,328 --> 00:43:51,798

I have one collegiate inning in

the Cape Cod League, and I haven't

:

00:43:51,848 --> 00:43:53,148

thrown a Division I inning yet.

:

00:43:53,158 --> 00:43:53,178

Yeah.

:

00:43:53,178 --> 00:43:53,378

Yeah.

:

00:43:54,018 --> 00:43:57,478

Well, I know that we are all awaiting

the long anticipated return of

:

00:43:57,488 --> 00:43:59,198

Kenny LaVarie to the mound for ODU.

:

00:43:59,228 --> 00:44:01,628

We've been hearing about it

for years and years and years.

:

00:44:01,638 --> 00:44:04,028

So we're excited to hopefully

see that at some point here

:

00:44:04,028 --> 00:44:04,768

in the next couple of weeks.

:

00:44:05,898 --> 00:44:06,398

Me too.

:

00:44:06,408 --> 00:44:06,908

Me too.

:

00:44:07,808 --> 00:44:10,788

Now I imagine you have not played

at Louisiana before, right?

:

00:44:10,818 --> 00:44:11,128

Yes.

:

00:44:11,228 --> 00:44:12,048

I have not been there.

:

00:44:12,378 --> 00:44:12,578

All right.

:

00:44:12,658 --> 00:44:16,658

Coach Finwood said that it's pretty crazy

environment, kind of on par with what

:

00:44:16,658 --> 00:44:18,218

you, what you've seen at Southern Miss.

:

00:44:18,783 --> 00:44:22,783

Uh, for some of their games, I think

with a little more French and farmer

:

00:44:22,783 --> 00:44:24,213

friend gibberish mixed in there.

:

00:44:24,623 --> 00:44:27,523

But, uh, is there anything different

that you all are doing from like a

:

00:44:27,523 --> 00:44:31,403

team perspective of getting prepped

to go and travel on Thursday and

:

00:44:31,403 --> 00:44:32,823

head down there for a three game set.

:

00:44:34,023 --> 00:44:34,813

I don't think so.

:

00:44:34,813 --> 00:44:36,453

I mean, I think baseball is baseball.

:

00:44:36,453 --> 00:44:40,253

If you're going to let stuff like that

bother you, you're probably not going

:

00:44:40,253 --> 00:44:41,873

to be successful in the first place.

:

00:44:41,883 --> 00:44:44,953

So, I mean, I think all it does is bring

a little bit more life to the game.

:

00:44:45,223 --> 00:44:47,873

It shouldn't really affect

us too much as a team.

:

00:44:48,053 --> 00:44:50,743

I think we're, uh, tougher

than that mentally.

:

00:44:50,773 --> 00:44:54,003

You're on the left side of the infield

with Kyle Edwards and the two of you

:

00:44:54,003 --> 00:44:56,123

make some pretty crazy plays over there.

:

00:44:56,473 --> 00:45:01,033

On Friday, Kyle made that stop deep

in the hole as the rain just started

:

00:45:01,033 --> 00:45:04,473

falling and through just a cannon

shot to first to get the guy out.

:

00:45:04,883 --> 00:45:07,043

Uh, what's it like playing

next to him though?

:

00:45:07,043 --> 00:45:09,613

And he is going to be flying all

around you, scooping things up.

:

00:45:09,683 --> 00:45:10,663

Uh, it's awesome.

:

00:45:10,673 --> 00:45:12,273

Me and Kyle have a little inside joke.

:

00:45:12,273 --> 00:45:15,153

Whenever one of us get a ground ball

and get the guy out, although I have

:

00:45:15,153 --> 00:45:17,533

made a few more errors than I would

like this year to start the year,

:

00:45:17,903 --> 00:45:20,373

but we're going to clean that up,

but me and Kyle make a joke that.

:

00:45:20,763 --> 00:45:22,803

If you hit the ball to the left

side of the infield, you're out.

:

00:45:22,803 --> 00:45:24,223

You don't even got to run to first base.

:

00:45:24,613 --> 00:45:26,503

Me and Kyle like to

joke around about that.

:

00:45:26,543 --> 00:45:27,653

You're not wrong though.

:

00:45:27,653 --> 00:45:30,823

It's a very like big league

esque side of the field.

:

00:45:30,823 --> 00:45:33,473

I mean, it's, that ball's

going to die over there.

:

00:45:33,533 --> 00:45:37,153

We make the joke that you're better

off hitting us a routine three

:

00:45:37,153 --> 00:45:38,623

hopper and we might miss that one.

:

00:45:38,623 --> 00:45:41,083

But if you got them side to side,

we're probably not missing it.

:

00:45:41,443 --> 00:45:42,003

For sure.

:

00:45:42,373 --> 00:45:44,703

Yeah, you're really good at the,

the, I was called the chipper

:

00:45:44,703 --> 00:45:47,923

Jones play going in on the ball

and just bare hands slinging it.

:

00:45:47,933 --> 00:45:49,293

You're, you're great at that play.

:

00:45:49,393 --> 00:45:49,593

Yeah.

:

00:45:49,593 --> 00:45:50,453

Those are fun ones.

:

00:45:51,543 --> 00:45:53,243

No, you play a little

bit of first base series.

:

00:45:53,243 --> 00:45:55,663

I mean, I think, yeah, we only got like

one game here maybe during the year,

:

00:45:55,663 --> 00:45:57,373

but how, how was that playing at first?

:

00:45:57,453 --> 00:46:01,203

It was new, but if that, I mean, I

might be back over there at some point.

:

00:46:01,203 --> 00:46:01,683

I don't know.

:

00:46:01,713 --> 00:46:03,043

Depending on how the pitching goes.

:

00:46:03,073 --> 00:46:06,643

Um, obviously I'd rather be

at third base, but, uh, yeah.

:

00:46:07,273 --> 00:46:10,183

If my arm needs it or that's what's

best for the team, then I'll head

:

00:46:10,183 --> 00:46:12,023

back over there and I'll like it.

:

00:46:12,123 --> 00:46:12,413

Yeah.

:

00:46:12,813 --> 00:46:15,113

I mean, it's a good, the good thing

is, you, you know how to field.

:

00:46:15,113 --> 00:46:17,713

And if you put a guy who's already

really good at fielding, you already

:

00:46:17,723 --> 00:46:21,133

have good footwork, you know, people

think you can just go play first base.

:

00:46:21,133 --> 00:46:21,618

You can't.

:

00:46:22,818 --> 00:46:24,628

I will say it's harder

than I thought it was.

:

00:46:24,968 --> 00:46:27,058

It's harder than I gave people

who play over there credit.

:

00:46:27,058 --> 00:46:30,578

I mean, I guess if you play over there

every day, it might get easier, but

:

00:46:30,788 --> 00:46:34,228

going from the left side to the right

side of the infield is not as easy

:

00:46:34,228 --> 00:46:36,108

as you would, as some might think.

:

00:46:36,388 --> 00:46:36,608

Yeah.

:

00:46:36,608 --> 00:46:39,818

I get real frustrated watching guys

speak when they play a first base and

:

00:46:39,818 --> 00:46:43,388

nothing makes me like a lot of right

handed first baseman doing where they put

:

00:46:43,388 --> 00:46:47,908

their, their left foot on the bag, trying

to catch the ball with the left hand.

:

00:46:47,908 --> 00:46:50,738

It's like, man, you just cut

off like two feet of stretch.

:

00:46:50,738 --> 00:46:50,788

Yeah.

:

00:46:50,788 --> 00:46:50,803

Yeah.

:

00:46:52,033 --> 00:46:55,573

Yeah, if you built any sympathy for

the guys over there at first base

:

00:46:55,573 --> 00:46:58,603

now that you've done it with someone

within the cannon shot, you know,

:

00:46:58,613 --> 00:47:00,213

plus arm from across the diamond.

:

00:47:00,263 --> 00:47:01,903

I mean, yeah, for sure.

:

00:47:01,993 --> 00:47:04,823

I would have to assume if you play

there every day, it does get easier.

:

00:47:04,823 --> 00:47:08,733

But for guys like me and boo aren't

used to playing over there, it is.

:

00:47:09,323 --> 00:47:12,973

It does take a bit of an adjustment

to Figure out there's a lot

:

00:47:12,973 --> 00:47:14,453

more footwork stuff third base.

:

00:47:14,453 --> 00:47:18,593

You just kind of react but first

base It's a lot more technique and

:

00:47:18,613 --> 00:47:22,643

stuff that it requires to be good

at you You're gonna play in the Cape

:

00:47:22,643 --> 00:47:24,933

again after the this spring here.

:

00:47:24,993 --> 00:47:25,923

I don't think so.

:

00:47:26,103 --> 00:47:29,193

I've been yeah went three times

I don't know what my plan is yet.

:

00:47:29,223 --> 00:47:33,358

I guess we'll see how the year

goes I'll decide that from there.

:

00:47:33,438 --> 00:47:33,738

Okay.

:

00:47:33,898 --> 00:47:34,538

I was curious.

:

00:47:34,538 --> 00:47:36,988

Are you, are you going to

be trying to play pro ball?

:

00:47:36,988 --> 00:47:37,998

Is that the hope still?

:

00:47:38,128 --> 00:47:38,888

That's the plan.

:

00:47:39,378 --> 00:47:40,248

All right, let's go.

:

00:47:40,548 --> 00:47:44,298

I, I have said many, I'll say this

to you, but I do not understand

:

00:47:44,618 --> 00:47:47,358

why every scout in the world

isn't out watching you every time.

:

00:47:47,358 --> 00:47:49,888

I don't know what a pro team

could want more out of a guy.

:

00:47:49,898 --> 00:47:53,718

Left handed hitting, outstanding

fielder, great teammate.

:

00:47:53,718 --> 00:47:55,318

I love the way you talk on the field.

:

00:47:55,318 --> 00:47:57,963

I just, It's, it's one of those

things that makes me not understand,

:

00:47:57,973 --> 00:47:59,553

uh, the pro game anymore.

:

00:47:59,693 --> 00:48:02,373

That you're not, uh, the fact

that you're here for your senior

:

00:48:02,373 --> 00:48:03,693

year, frankly, is crazy to me.

:

00:48:04,063 --> 00:48:04,943

And I'm glad you're here.

:

00:48:04,973 --> 00:48:05,513

Love you, buddy.

:

00:48:05,513 --> 00:48:06,903

But I don't get it.

:

00:48:07,043 --> 00:48:08,453

Maybe everything happens for a reason.

:

00:48:08,463 --> 00:48:10,953

Hopefully I'll get my chance at

the end of this year, but maybe

:

00:48:10,953 --> 00:48:13,443

it was just God telling me to

play with my brother for one year.

:

00:48:13,493 --> 00:48:13,973

I don't know.

:

00:48:14,263 --> 00:48:17,973

I mean, I was a pro last year, but

I'm here now and I'm loving it.

:

00:48:18,478 --> 00:48:20,218

I got one last go at it.

:

00:48:20,268 --> 00:48:22,208

I'm here with Marco and

the rest of the guys.

:

00:48:22,328 --> 00:48:22,768

It's awesome.

:

00:48:23,458 --> 00:48:24,228

Yeah, that's fantastic.

:

00:48:24,238 --> 00:48:24,428

Yeah.

:

00:48:24,428 --> 00:48:25,428

He said much worse things.

:

00:48:25,458 --> 00:48:26,288

Good to play with your brother.

:

00:48:27,348 --> 00:48:28,008

That's for sure.

:

00:48:28,028 --> 00:48:31,978

Yeah, we're definitely hoping for a

nice long run into the summer there.

:

00:48:31,978 --> 00:48:33,088

Extend that out a little bit.

:

00:48:33,098 --> 00:48:36,218

So you don't have to worry about the

Cape early on, but Kenny, uh, thanks

:

00:48:36,248 --> 00:48:38,978

so much for taking a few minutes

out of your day on a very busy

:

00:48:38,978 --> 00:48:40,668

travel week to come chat with us.

:

00:48:40,668 --> 00:48:41,988

We greatly appreciate it.

:

00:48:42,398 --> 00:48:42,928

So thank you.

:

00:48:42,968 --> 00:48:43,478

No problem.

:

00:48:43,488 --> 00:48:44,198

Thanks for having me guys.

:

00:48:49,040 --> 00:48:52,050

Gary: I want to chat through

our midweek this week, with

:

00:48:52,200 --> 00:48:54,250

Richmond coming down to the Bud.

:

00:48:54,870 --> 00:48:59,480

They're 9 and 10 so far to start the

season, uh, but the interesting fact,

:

00:48:59,510 --> 00:49:01,570

this is going to be their first road game.

:

00:49:01,580 --> 00:49:04,130

They opened with a 19 game homestand.

:

00:49:04,130 --> 00:49:07,622

CB: is, I mean, That's just a benefit

of they have a pretty nice field.

:

00:49:08,072 --> 00:49:10,842

Um, and a lot of these Northern

teams want to come down and play.

:

00:49:10,842 --> 00:49:13,062

I mean, I see Niagara

came down and Mount St.

:

00:49:13,062 --> 00:49:15,862

Mary's, Boston College, Sacred Heart,

:

00:49:15,862 --> 00:49:16,712

Central Connecticut.

:

00:49:16,762 --> 00:49:18,352

I mean, these all sound like cold places.

:

00:49:18,352 --> 00:49:19,262

I don't know where Marist is.

:

00:49:19,262 --> 00:49:20,212

I'm assuming it's cold.

:

00:49:20,762 --> 00:49:21,482

Princeton.

:

00:49:21,492 --> 00:49:24,242

I mean, yeah, Cornell, a lot

of, a lot of cold sounding

:

00:49:24,242 --> 00:49:26,882

Gary: Yeah, yeah, Maris, I believe

that they're up there in New

:

00:49:26,882 --> 00:49:27,622

York somewhere.

:

00:49:27,622 --> 00:49:30,262

I think I've followed them for

basketball in the past, but.

:

00:49:30,837 --> 00:49:36,477

Yeah, but to go 9 and 10 against maybe not

super tough competition all at home, I'm

:

00:49:36,477 --> 00:49:37,887

a little surprised that they're 9 and 10.

:

00:49:37,887 --> 00:49:39,507

I thought they have a

little bit better record.

:

00:49:39,867 --> 00:49:40,707

I think I started off

:

00:49:40,707 --> 00:49:44,417

getting swept in four games

by Niagara, so I guess they

:

00:49:44,417 --> 00:49:45,717

broke out of that hold up there

:

00:49:46,467 --> 00:49:49,547

in nearly Canada and decided to come

down and take it out on the Spiders.

:

00:49:49,959 --> 00:49:52,149

CB: They also, you know, you talk

about first year with a new head

:

00:49:52,149 --> 00:49:53,929

coach and that's always a change.

:

00:49:53,929 --> 00:49:55,629

I mean, I'm looking, I

look through the roster

:

00:49:55,629 --> 00:49:58,469

and you think a team in the

middle of Virginia, I'd recognize

:

00:49:58,479 --> 00:50:01,579

some names that they, they have

very few players from Virginia.

:

00:50:01,829 --> 00:50:04,309

so I'm I'm sure it's just kind

of a transition year for them.

:

00:50:04,729 --> 00:50:07,719

Gary: Yeah, and they did take 2

out of 3 against Cornell over the

:

00:50:07,719 --> 00:50:10,909

weekend, so they're on a

little bit of a warm up streak.

:

00:50:10,919 --> 00:50:10,939

Yeah.

:

00:50:11,689 --> 00:50:14,529

You know, as we talked about with

Princeton, we just have to show up

:

00:50:14,609 --> 00:50:18,019

and play ball and play well and do

our thing and come out with a win.

:

00:50:18,429 --> 00:50:19,449

Don't take them lightly.

:

00:50:19,459 --> 00:50:20,219

Don't overlook them.

:

00:50:20,229 --> 00:50:22,929

I hope that they have learned that

lesson from a Tuesday last week.

:

00:50:22,991 --> 00:50:25,521

CB: I mean, I always feel like whenever

you play Richmond that's the game

:

00:50:25,521 --> 00:50:26,261

you should win.

:

00:50:26,281 --> 00:50:27,691

And you know, Richmond plays them tough.

:

00:50:27,701 --> 00:50:30,081

They're definitely one every time

they play Richmond, especially when

:

00:50:30,081 --> 00:50:33,811

they play up, up in Richmond, they,

they play really, really hard.

:

00:50:33,811 --> 00:50:37,411

So again, like I said, got to

show up and, you know, Be prepared

:

00:50:37,421 --> 00:50:38,801

to, uh, to play and to beat them.

:

00:50:39,625 --> 00:50:41,105

Gary: yeah, they, they

do have some talent.

:

00:50:41,105 --> 00:50:43,143

Um, they they've announced their starter.

:

00:50:43,143 --> 00:50:45,521

I'm going to butcher his last name.

:

00:50:45,521 --> 00:50:46,540

Uh, Logan Yumker.

:

00:50:46,880 --> 00:50:48,730

Um, he's six foot eight.

:

00:50:48,740 --> 00:50:49,600

he's a big dude.

:

00:50:49,600 --> 00:50:51,960

He's got a 1.

:

00:50:52,210 --> 00:50:53,100

and two thirds innings.

:

00:50:53,240 --> 00:50:55,380

17 strikeouts, 11 walks.

:

00:50:55,850 --> 00:50:59,850

Uh, so they're definitely not trotting

out any kind of scrub here on Tuesday.

:

00:50:59,850 --> 00:51:01,080

That's going to be batting practice.

:

00:51:01,080 --> 00:51:03,720

I mean, anytime some guy's

throwing from six foot eight,

:

00:51:03,720 --> 00:51:04,930

it's going to be difficult to hit.

:

00:51:05,140 --> 00:51:06,510

CB: He needs more vowels in that name.

:

00:51:06,520 --> 00:51:08,180

It's Y M K E R.

:

00:51:08,240 --> 00:51:10,070

That's not enough letters.

:

00:51:10,720 --> 00:51:11,030

Gary: Yeah.

:

00:51:11,030 --> 00:51:14,060

I'm, I'm no expert on pronouncing

things, but I'm going to go with,

:

00:51:14,060 --> 00:51:17,670

uh, Yonker and, uh, probably be

wrong, but that's, that's okay.

:

00:51:17,980 --> 00:51:18,680

Uh, either way,

:

00:51:18,760 --> 00:51:19,360

CB: I'm thinking Imker.

:

00:51:19,645 --> 00:51:20,080

Gary: a problem.

:

00:51:20,600 --> 00:51:20,949

CB: I think it's Imker.

:

00:51:20,950 --> 00:51:21,380

Imker.

:

00:51:21,645 --> 00:51:22,325

That's my guess.

:

00:51:22,960 --> 00:51:25,410

I don't know how I'll prove

that, but it's my guess.

:

00:51:26,015 --> 00:51:28,715

Gary: We'll have to listen out

and, uh, hear if, if Jack gets

:

00:51:28,715 --> 00:51:30,035

it right on the call on Tuesday.

:

00:51:30,035 --> 00:51:30,105

Okay.

:

00:51:30,410 --> 00:51:30,860

CB: Sure.

:

00:51:32,355 --> 00:51:33,475

Gary: Um, yeah, but they've

:

00:51:33,475 --> 00:51:36,015

got four guys in their lineup

that are hitting over 300.

:

00:51:36,025 --> 00:51:37,175

So they can definitely hit the ball.

:

00:51:37,175 --> 00:51:41,415

One guy I wanted to highlight, uh, DJ

Pacheco is a junior outfielder for them.

:

00:51:41,415 --> 00:51:43,245

He's hitting 327, 1.

:

00:51:43,245 --> 00:51:49,675

100 OPS, uh, three bombs, 11 ribbies,

and he's four for four stealing bases,

:

00:51:50,035 --> 00:51:53,995

so he's got some speed too, but really

they, the top four in their lineup.

:

00:51:54,605 --> 00:51:57,505

Uh, the play regularly,

uh, They They can hit.

:

00:51:57,815 --> 00:52:00,105

So I don't think this is

going to be a game where we're

:

00:52:00,145 --> 00:52:01,335

lighting them up with pitching.

:

00:52:01,335 --> 00:52:03,875

I think they're going to put the

ball in play and see what happens.

:

00:52:04,275 --> 00:52:06,665

It's probably gonna be a pretty good

ball game on Tuesday at the butt.

:

00:52:07,120 --> 00:52:07,430

CB: Yeah.

:

00:52:07,460 --> 00:52:12,000

I mean, I always, I, they're one of my,

one of my favorite, um, mascot and logo.

:

00:52:12,000 --> 00:52:13,240

I love the Richmond logo.

:

00:52:13,650 --> 00:52:14,930

I'm not a huge fan of the school.

:

00:52:14,930 --> 00:52:15,900

They're kind of, got that.

:

00:52:15,910 --> 00:52:17,040

They think they're UVA.

:

00:52:17,040 --> 00:52:18,470

They're kind of, they got

the arrogant jerk thing.

:

00:52:18,470 --> 00:52:20,120

They were very rude last

time I was up there.

:

00:52:20,460 --> 00:52:21,770

Uh, some all four beat in Richmond.

:

00:52:21,770 --> 00:52:24,160

Gary: I, think when they built

their new football stadium.

:

00:52:24,465 --> 00:52:28,425

a lot of their fans were buying

three season tickets just so they

:

00:52:28,425 --> 00:52:29,895

didn't have to sit next to anybody.

:

00:52:30,355 --> 00:52:34,545

Um, so that was always really fun

to, to interact with up there in

:

00:52:34,545 --> 00:52:35,965

Richmond, but we got to show up.

:

00:52:35,965 --> 00:52:36,745

We got to play well.

:

00:52:36,755 --> 00:52:40,255

I think if we put 10, 11, 12 runs on the

board, we should cruise pretty well, but

:

00:52:40,585 --> 00:52:43,745

they're, they're not going to make it easy

for us and they are absolutely a step up

:

00:52:43,745 --> 00:52:45,455

in competition from Princeton last week.

:

00:52:45,844 --> 00:52:46,504

CB: absolutely.

:

00:52:46,534 --> 00:52:51,084

But then into the weekend, we

got our first road trip weekend.

:

00:52:51,084 --> 00:52:54,814

Gary: Yes, heading down to see the

old raging Cajuns and coach Ben would

:

00:52:54,834 --> 00:52:56,904

seem pretty excited about the trip.

:

00:52:56,904 --> 00:52:58,234

He said he had some good memories there.

:

00:52:58,234 --> 00:53:01,474

He knows the crowd is pretty

crazy and a good atmosphere.

:

00:53:01,474 --> 00:53:05,354

So guys are kind of, kind of, get

that first Sunbelt road trip crowd

:

00:53:05,354 --> 00:53:08,844

experience here, like you see it at

Southern miss sometimes, and some of

:

00:53:08,844 --> 00:53:09,974

the other programs that we've done.

:

00:53:10,154 --> 00:53:11,484

Always have great fan

:

00:53:11,504 --> 00:53:12,044

turnout.

:

00:53:12,444 --> 00:53:12,574

But

:

00:53:12,574 --> 00:53:14,904

They are, 11 and eight

to start the season.

:

00:53:15,194 --> 00:53:17,954

Uh, they just finished taking two

out of three from Arkansas state.

:

00:53:17,954 --> 00:53:18,734

Pretty good series

:

00:53:18,744 --> 00:53:19,074

there.

:

00:53:19,284 --> 00:53:21,724

They dropped the Friday

game, uh, 11 to eight.

:

00:53:22,349 --> 00:53:26,249

Came back in, won Saturday, seven to

six and won on Sunday, eight to five.

:

00:53:26,649 --> 00:53:30,069

They have a midweek game on

Tuesday as well against Southern.

:

00:53:30,309 --> 00:53:31,179

CB: Wherever that is.

:

00:53:31,285 --> 00:53:32,005

Gary: Southern University.

:

00:53:32,005 --> 00:53:33,265

I know, I've, I know, I've bet on them

:

00:53:33,265 --> 00:53:33,895

in basketball.

:

00:53:33,895 --> 00:53:35,755

I couldn't tell you exactly

where they are, but I imagine

:

00:53:35,755 --> 00:53:36,715

they're somewhere in the south.

:

00:53:36,849 --> 00:53:37,579

CB: I enjoy it.

:

00:53:37,579 --> 00:53:38,959

Actually have a Wednesday game too.

:

00:53:38,979 --> 00:53:42,009

They played McNeese, which

again, wherever that is.,

:

00:53:42,059 --> 00:53:42,599

Gary: I know.

:

00:53:42,629 --> 00:53:46,379

I know that one's in Louisiana because

their basketball team made the NCAA

:

00:53:46,469 --> 00:53:48,539

tournament and they're coached by.

:

00:53:48,844 --> 00:53:50,684

Uh, the fugitive himself,

:

00:53:51,094 --> 00:53:52,914

Will Wade, who was at VCU for a

:

00:53:52,914 --> 00:53:55,544

while and LSU can for NCAA violation.

:

00:53:55,614 --> 00:53:57,634

So I at least know where McNeese State is.

:

00:53:57,644 --> 00:54:00,204

That's a probably a good little

rivalry game there for Louisiana.

:

00:54:00,344 --> 00:54:03,984

CB: and I see that the Louisiana,

they got to play a weekend at

:

00:54:04,174 --> 00:54:05,564

Minute Maid Park in Houston.

:

00:54:05,744 --> 00:54:06,594

That's pretty awesome.

:

00:54:07,064 --> 00:54:08,384

Got to play Vanderbilt, L.

:

00:54:08,384 --> 00:54:08,544

S.

:

00:54:08,544 --> 00:54:08,974

U.

:

00:54:08,974 --> 00:54:09,724

And Houston.

:

00:54:10,264 --> 00:54:13,664

Um, and uh, not surprisingly

lost all three of those games.

:

00:54:14,379 --> 00:54:17,359

But not really blowouts played all

pretty close games against really good.

:

00:54:17,359 --> 00:54:17,419

I

:

00:54:17,449 --> 00:54:20,719

mean, as here Vanderbilt was

number nine LSU was number three.

:

00:54:20,719 --> 00:54:23,489

So even losing those games,

that's, That's a big deal.

:

00:54:23,519 --> 00:54:24,009

good for them.

:

00:54:24,954 --> 00:54:28,654

Gary: I'm hoping those early season

tournaments become a much bigger deal

:

00:54:28,674 --> 00:54:29,774

because they're always fun to watch.

:

00:54:30,124 --> 00:54:32,284

They've done one at Minute

Maid in Houston for a while.

:

00:54:32,634 --> 00:54:35,614

Uh, they do one up in Arlington

at the Rangers new stadium.

:

00:54:36,049 --> 00:54:40,629

So I would love to see that, like any

indoor or warm weather place, go get four

:

00:54:40,629 --> 00:54:44,469

to six, pretty good teams, throw in the

mix and kind of do what basketball does

:

00:54:44,479 --> 00:54:48,259

with those multi team events, I would

love to see ODU get into one of those

:

00:54:48,259 --> 00:54:50,269

and have a nice little away road trip.

:

00:54:50,304 --> 00:54:54,504

CB: Well, I've been in them before,

not in the big league stadium,

:

00:54:54,504 --> 00:54:56,884

but they've, they've hosted, you

know, some of those weekends.

:

00:54:56,954 --> 00:55:00,774

The last time that Virginia tech

played at ODU was in one of those.

:

00:55:00,814 --> 00:55:03,904

And that same weekend we had Kentucky

back when they were really good

:

00:55:03,904 --> 00:55:07,994

at AJ Reed, who ended up being a

a first round pick of the Astros.

:

00:55:08,004 --> 00:55:10,174

And I think it was probably

playing for Houston the next year.

:

00:55:10,504 --> 00:55:13,404

And then out of baseball, like a year

for that was very odd career yet, but

:

00:55:13,424 --> 00:55:14,694

he hit a home run that I don't think has

:

00:55:14,959 --> 00:55:16,499

Gary: I, I remember AJ Reed.

:

00:55:16,499 --> 00:55:19,329

He definitely had some power

whenever he did make contact,

:

00:55:19,339 --> 00:55:20,639

he crushed it in the pros.

:

00:55:20,929 --> 00:55:24,169

I just don't think he made quite

enough contact to stay around for

:

00:55:24,169 --> 00:55:25,709

a while, but I know that they.

:

00:55:25,934 --> 00:55:28,404

There used to be a lot of early

season tournaments down in like

:

00:55:28,404 --> 00:55:30,044

Myrtle Beach at the Ripken fields.

:

00:55:30,044 --> 00:55:32,994

They would do them down in Florida,

but would love to see that trend

:

00:55:32,994 --> 00:55:35,584

continue of using major league

ballparks to have those because

:

00:55:35,584 --> 00:55:37,444

it, it's just as a cool feel to it.

:

00:55:37,484 --> 00:55:40,504

You get some matchups that you

normally don't, uh, especially

:

00:55:40,504 --> 00:55:41,494

with some of those top teams.

:

00:55:41,494 --> 00:55:44,424

CB: Yeah, it's anything

that makes college baseball

:

00:55:44,434 --> 00:55:47,894

more prominent is uh, which you know,

it's funny There's a meme going around

:

00:55:47,894 --> 00:55:53,294

this week about how um, you know The ncaa

banning bat flips and the celebrations

:

00:55:53,684 --> 00:55:57,334

and those were the things that were going

on social media that were making it big

:

00:55:57,614 --> 00:56:02,194

college baseball last few years was really

Building up a lot of steam and it seems

:

00:56:02,194 --> 00:56:06,904

like a lot of that kind of got killed by

these, you know Arbitrary rules and so

:

00:56:06,914 --> 00:56:10,724

like I saw a guy I think uh, they did a

bad flip and got ejected from a game You

:

00:56:11,154 --> 00:56:13,164

Um, and it's it's it's disappointing.

:

00:56:13,164 --> 00:56:15,144

I mean, you know, it's

you're putting grandpa

:

00:56:15,184 --> 00:56:17,634

mentality on the modern

day It's like, you know,

:

00:56:18,054 --> 00:56:20,754

I probably 10 years ago would have

been like anybody I don't want

:

00:56:20,754 --> 00:56:21,814

to see bat flips and all that.

:

00:56:21,814 --> 00:56:23,484

But you know, the reality

is like it's just guys

:

00:56:23,504 --> 00:56:26,024

having fun You know, it's like

hey, you don't get bad flipped

:

00:56:26,024 --> 00:56:27,184

on don't give up the home run.

:

00:56:27,184 --> 00:56:31,174

So it's It is I mean, it's it's a little

sad that that just kind of made me think

:

00:56:31,174 --> 00:56:34,234

of that that these things that could

help Grow the game that we're kind of

:

00:56:34,695 --> 00:56:37,955

Gary: Yeah, especially with the talent

that's stockpiling in college baseball

:

00:56:37,955 --> 00:56:40,415

with the shortening of the draft and some

of the other things we've talked about.

:

00:56:40,415 --> 00:56:44,795

But I just wish there was more

discretion on what constitutes

:

00:56:44,795 --> 00:56:46,205

an ejection for a bat flip.

:

00:56:46,275 --> 00:56:49,075

Like, you know, if you're chucking

the bat at the pitcher or throwing it

:

00:56:49,075 --> 00:56:50,535

50 feet in the air, then yeah, sure.

:

00:56:50,545 --> 00:56:51,725

Like, that's, that's a problem.

:

00:56:52,115 --> 00:56:54,295

But some of the ones I've

seen ejections for are.

:

00:56:54,680 --> 00:56:55,830

Like they're, they're nothing.

:

00:56:55,840 --> 00:57:00,370

That's just taking the fun out of it

and ruining a good moment for somebody.

:

00:57:00,370 --> 00:57:03,170

I, I think you got to make it

as entertaining as possible.

:

00:57:03,170 --> 00:57:05,220

And like you said, you don't

want to give up the bad flip.

:

00:57:05,220 --> 00:57:08,510

Don't give up the bomb or like,

you know, there might be some

:

00:57:08,510 --> 00:57:09,960

consequences for your bad flip later.

:

00:57:09,960 --> 00:57:10,370

We'll see.

:

00:57:10,420 --> 00:57:12,090

Don't make this the no

fun league like we've

:

00:57:12,090 --> 00:57:12,750

seen in some other sports.

:

00:57:12,800 --> 00:57:17,660

CB: And the part that bugs me the most,

the NCAA, the people who are banning it

:

00:57:17,960 --> 00:57:19,680

would be the first ones to be sharing it.

:

00:57:20,310 --> 00:57:22,900

You know, they were the ones that were

had the clips and the pictures and they

:

00:57:22,900 --> 00:57:26,650

had it off and they were shoving all over

social media, which they should have been.

:

00:57:26,670 --> 00:57:28,790

I mean, you want, you want to

sell the sport and then they're

:

00:57:28,790 --> 00:57:29,710

the same ones that ban it.

:

00:57:29,780 --> 00:57:30,120

So that's

:

00:57:30,710 --> 00:57:31,300

frustrating.

:

00:57:31,415 --> 00:57:35,035

Gary: reminds me of like with NFL films

used to share photos of like the biggest

:

00:57:35,035 --> 00:57:38,985

hits of the week and there were just these

helmet to helmet concussion inducing hits.

:

00:57:39,365 --> 00:57:42,015

They're like, we have to do something

to get rid of concussions in the game.

:

00:57:42,255 --> 00:57:45,305

Well, you seem to like putting them on the

video clips out there pretty frequently.

:

00:57:46,045 --> 00:57:48,555

Um, but anyway, well, we

got, we got sidetracked

:

00:57:48,555 --> 00:57:48,825

there.

:

00:57:48,825 --> 00:57:51,375

We'll, uh, we'll get back to

back flipping at another time.

:

00:57:51,375 --> 00:57:53,785

But, likely three starting pitchers.

:

00:57:53,845 --> 00:57:56,815

I don't know what particular order

they're going to be in this week.

:

00:57:56,815 --> 00:57:56,995

But.

:

00:57:57,390 --> 00:57:59,030

Andrew Herman is their big lefty.

:

00:57:59,120 --> 00:57:59,510

3.

:

00:57:59,550 --> 00:58:03,070

04 ERA, uh, 31 strikeouts, 11 walks.

:

00:58:03,120 --> 00:58:04,990

He's had a pretty good season so far.

:

00:58:04,990 --> 00:58:07,700

Uh, Carson Fluno, a 3.

:

00:58:07,700 --> 00:58:08,550

66 ERA.

:

00:58:08,680 --> 00:58:11,080

Those are two of their top three

arms that you're going to see at

:

00:58:11,110 --> 00:58:12,810

some point starting over the weekend.

:

00:58:13,280 --> 00:58:17,040

Then on the offensive

side, Kyle DeBarge, uh, 1.

:

00:58:17,480 --> 00:58:21,600

001 OPS, eight bombs, 23

reviews, dude is a monster

:

00:58:21,650 --> 00:58:23,310

CB: He was the name I

remembered immediately when

:

00:58:23,310 --> 00:58:24,710

I looked at the stats here.

:

00:58:25,090 --> 00:58:27,280

Um, I was like, I must know

his name from last year.

:

00:58:27,280 --> 00:58:29,950

It's because he had a monster year last

year while he's already got more home

:

00:58:29,960 --> 00:58:31,290

runs than he had last season.

:

00:58:31,780 --> 00:58:32,980

So he's off to a

:

00:58:32,990 --> 00:58:33,510

heck of a,

:

00:58:33,870 --> 00:58:34,110

Gary: Yeah.

:

00:58:34,110 --> 00:58:35,360

they, they can absolutely hit.

:

00:58:35,360 --> 00:58:37,240

And, Trey LaFleur is another

one to watch out for.

:

00:58:37,240 --> 00:58:40,300

He's hitting, you know,

just a casual 404 with a 1.

:

00:58:40,300 --> 00:58:43,340

134 OPS, three home runs, 13 rubies.

:

00:58:43,820 --> 00:58:45,430

Uh, so yeah, surprise, surprise.

:

00:58:45,430 --> 00:58:47,890

We're going up against a tough team

in conference play this weekend.

:

00:58:47,890 --> 00:58:49,570

and this time you get

to do it on the road.

:

00:58:49,620 --> 00:58:51,540

CB: The roads are great guys

get a chance to go bond.

:

00:58:51,540 --> 00:58:55,200

they go down there and get some,

get some, catfish and some, uh, move

:

00:58:55,200 --> 00:58:57,760

on, which I don't know what that

is, but, uh, somebody from Louisiana

:

00:58:57,760 --> 00:58:59,020

was telling me they love boot on.

:

00:58:59,050 --> 00:59:01,880

So go and I don't know what

it is, but have fun with it.

:

00:59:02,430 --> 00:59:04,340

Um, but you get that chance to go

:

00:59:04,630 --> 00:59:08,890

and get out of your element,

only focus on the baseball and

:

00:59:08,890 --> 00:59:10,630

really just be with your guys.

:

00:59:10,640 --> 00:59:12,240

So go in there And, have a great

:

00:59:12,240 --> 00:59:12,620

weekend.

:

00:59:12,781 --> 00:59:14,851

Gary: There'll be some nerves

and some anxiety, especially if

:

00:59:14,851 --> 00:59:16,611

that crowd on Friday at six is.

:

00:59:17,256 --> 00:59:18,356

There's really cranking.

:

00:59:18,396 --> 00:59:19,976

But I mean, that those are the

environments you're going to play

:

00:59:19,976 --> 00:59:22,316

in the Sunbelt and the conference

tournaments can be the same way.

:

00:59:22,626 --> 00:59:26,346

And you know, if we're in up in a

regional, it's not going to be at ODU.

:

00:59:26,356 --> 00:59:30,236

So there's going to be some, uh, hostile

fan bases that you're dealing with.

:

00:59:30,236 --> 00:59:33,176

And just love to see our guys, you

know, get used to that and then go

:

00:59:33,196 --> 00:59:36,336

thrive in them, kind of like the way

Jacob Gomez thrived when we were down

:

00:59:36,336 --> 00:59:39,796

in South Carolina and 21, and, you

know, being able to chirp a little

:

00:59:39,796 --> 00:59:41,536

bit back and have fun like that.

:

00:59:41,536 --> 00:59:41,776

So.

:

00:59:42,051 --> 00:59:43,201

Be a good experience for them.

:

00:59:43,201 --> 00:59:44,971

CB: That's where you really

see what guys are made of too.

:

00:59:45,021 --> 00:59:50,641

It's funny enough, I went and saw, um,

Tanner Shadoe, who is our:

:

00:59:50,641 --> 00:59:54,651

he plays at Cape Henry, uh, probably going

to be like a third baseman outfielder.

:

00:59:54,671 --> 00:59:55,981

He was pitching that night.

:

00:59:56,191 --> 01:00:00,121

Actually, in Cape Henry And, avoiding

the game there, Grassfield, Grassfield,

:

01:00:00,141 --> 01:00:03,971

there was some high school kids that

decide to come over to the Cape Henry

:

01:00:03,971 --> 01:00:08,661

side and start talking a bunch of mess

and chirping at the players and the Cape

:

01:00:08,691 --> 01:00:12,541

Henry players, you know, they were just

kind of laughing and talking back and it

:

01:00:12,541 --> 01:00:17,021

just showed like they, there was a level

of just, we got this and complete comfort

:

01:00:17,021 --> 01:00:19,751

and confidence because that, that, I

mean, this is the guys who've been there,

:

01:00:20,131 --> 01:00:21,461

they won the state championship last

:

01:00:21,461 --> 01:00:21,611

year.

:

01:00:21,611 --> 01:00:22,981

I think might've won it two years ago.

:

01:00:22,981 --> 01:00:24,031

There's probably some kids on there.

:

01:00:24,031 --> 01:00:25,921

The seniors probably have two

state championships already.

:

01:00:26,256 --> 01:00:27,216

Probably lying for another one.

:

01:00:27,216 --> 01:00:27,226

I

:

01:00:27,256 --> 01:00:30,916

mean, so right there, if, if a high

school kid can show that level of

:

01:00:30,916 --> 01:00:35,581

just like composure, Then I guarantee

we got some guys at our college

:

01:00:35,581 --> 01:00:36,391

team They're going to be able to

:

01:00:36,391 --> 01:00:38,791

have that composure and enjoy that moment.

:

01:00:38,791 --> 01:00:41,921

Enjoy that experience So, you know a

lot of our players when you talk to them

:

01:00:41,921 --> 01:00:45,371

They have southern miss is one of those

places where other teams go in and they I

:

01:00:45,371 --> 01:00:48,221

mean the the Fans really get after them.

:

01:00:48,461 --> 01:00:50,941

But if you talk to our guys, they love

playing southern miss they they let they

:

01:00:50,941 --> 01:00:55,641

say the people are actually when you talk

to them genuinely nice Love baseball and

:

01:00:55,641 --> 01:00:57,871

they do they're just rooting for their

team and that's part of the whole thing

:

01:00:57,871 --> 01:00:58,211

for them.

:

01:00:58,211 --> 01:00:58,551

Yeah

:

01:00:58,611 --> 01:01:00,551

Gary: I've interacted with

a lot of Southern Miss fans.

:

01:01:00,551 --> 01:01:04,181

I've had several invites to go down there

for football, baseball, whatever it is.

:

01:01:04,611 --> 01:01:06,521

They, they truly are

awesome baseball fans.

:

01:01:06,521 --> 01:01:07,671

Their stadium is cool.

:

01:01:07,911 --> 01:01:10,621

What they do out beyond right field,

where they just basically back the

:

01:01:10,621 --> 01:01:13,871

trucks up and have tailgates to

watch the game is pretty awesome.

:

01:01:14,271 --> 01:01:17,721

I would love to see our crowd and

our fan base get to that point where

:

01:01:17,721 --> 01:01:20,541

the new ballpark comes rolling out

because it makes it a very, very

:

01:01:20,541 --> 01:01:21,841

fun environment to play baseball.

:

01:01:21,841 --> 01:01:23,981

CB: Baseball in the south is just

something special when you watch,

:

01:01:23,981 --> 01:01:27,191

you know, like Southern Miss and I'm

sure we've seen this weekend on TV

:

01:01:27,191 --> 01:01:31,751

with Louisiana and you watch some of

those SEC games and it's just, it's

:

01:01:31,771 --> 01:01:34,961

a whole different vibe and that's

really what we all want to have.

:

01:01:35,311 --> 01:01:36,081

Gary: Absolutely.

:

01:01:36,081 --> 01:01:39,301

Well, hopefully they get off to a

good start, can find a way to go

:

01:01:39,581 --> 01:01:41,471

down to Louisiana, win the series.

:

01:01:41,961 --> 01:01:44,071

Uh, cause you know, you win your

first two series, you put yourself

:

01:01:44,071 --> 01:01:47,071

in a pretty good spot, uh, for the

rest of the season, give yourself a

:

01:01:47,071 --> 01:01:48,331

little bit of breathing room there.

:

01:01:48,331 --> 01:01:51,431

Before we wrap up here, a couple of

things for you, go to youmonarchist.

:

01:01:51,721 --> 01:01:53,221

com and click on the.

:

01:01:53,541 --> 01:01:56,841

Store button, you will see a

lot of good baseball merch.

:

01:01:56,851 --> 01:01:58,501

We just, added a new shirt this week.

:

01:01:58,841 --> 01:02:02,701

All of the proceeds from that go back

to the program, either through ODAF or

:

01:02:02,701 --> 01:02:05,901

through, the pride of ODU NIL collective.

:

01:02:06,261 --> 01:02:09,631

uh, so great way to to get some

cool gear and also support.

:

01:02:09,946 --> 01:02:13,306

ODU baseball, and then there's some other

shirts out there for some other teams.

:

01:02:13,516 --> 01:02:13,726

We have a

:

01:02:13,726 --> 01:02:15,706

lot more on deck for that.

:

01:02:15,986 --> 01:02:19,326

And then we're also doing a

Monarchist Bracket Challenge.

:

01:02:19,446 --> 01:02:23,036

If you go to any of our social media

feeds, you will see the invite for that.

:

01:02:23,286 --> 01:02:25,786

You can go in there, compete

against other ODU fans.

:

01:02:26,036 --> 01:02:27,186

The password on there is VCUsucks.

:

01:02:28,256 --> 01:02:31,526

So, you'll feel right at home logging

into that for college basketball.

:

01:02:31,756 --> 01:02:33,216

CB, anything on your end?

:

01:02:33,216 --> 01:02:34,176

Where can people find your stuff?

:

01:02:34,336 --> 01:02:35,676

CB: I'm glad you told me the pad because I

:

01:02:35,676 --> 01:02:37,006

was, I need to do a bracket.

:

01:02:37,156 --> 01:02:37,216

I

:

01:02:37,216 --> 01:02:38,306

didn't realize it was a password.

:

01:02:38,306 --> 01:02:39,196

So I'm glad you mentioned it.

:

01:02:39,196 --> 01:02:42,476

I'm about to go, uh, set that up

so we see how badly I could lose.

:

01:02:43,011 --> 01:02:44,671

Um, but you know, for me,

:

01:02:44,691 --> 01:02:48,391

just, you know, keep looking at CB

sports photography, um, on Instagram,

:

01:02:48,531 --> 01:02:51,891

uh, Facebook, and we definitely, uh,

always make to try to make those co

:

01:02:51,891 --> 01:02:54,711

posts on the monarchist You can typically

see them on the monarchist pages.

:

01:02:55,101 --> 01:02:57,481

High school baseball started, so

I've already gotten to one game.

:

01:02:57,481 --> 01:03:01,781

I'm hoping to get to a few more and,

uh, hoping to see some OU tennis next

:

01:03:01,781 --> 01:03:03,311

weekend while these guys are on the road.

:

01:03:03,861 --> 01:03:08,021

And I'm just looking forward to another

beautiful week of, of enjoying, uh,

:

01:03:08,351 --> 01:03:08,371

OU

:

01:03:08,452 --> 01:03:12,732

Gary: think ODU Tennis set a record the

other day for the fastest win in program

:

01:03:12,732 --> 01:03:13,232

history.

:

01:03:13,382 --> 01:03:15,982

I want to say it was Arkansas State.

:

01:03:16,192 --> 01:03:19,822

Like, they clenched the match

in like 20 or 25 minutes.

:

01:03:20,112 --> 01:03:20,922

Something stupid.

:

01:03:21,272 --> 01:03:22,072

They are awesome.

:

01:03:22,072 --> 01:03:24,542

If you get a chance to go over

to the Tennis Complex and check

:

01:03:24,542 --> 01:03:26,172

them out, they are very good.

:

01:03:26,482 --> 01:03:30,262

They went a lot or a lot of fun to

watch, but I think that will do it

:

01:03:30,292 --> 01:03:32,502

for us on the Hudson homers podcast.

:

01:03:32,512 --> 01:03:33,972

Thank you so much for listening.

:

01:03:33,972 --> 01:03:35,922

If you're not already,

make sure to subscribe.

:

01:03:36,112 --> 01:03:39,212

We'll have a contest here coming

up in the next couple of weeks, uh,

:

01:03:39,222 --> 01:03:41,272

for anyone who leaves us a review.

:

01:03:41,272 --> 01:03:43,622

So feel free to go in there and

leave us a nice five star, review.

:

01:03:43,622 --> 01:03:46,452

If you leave us a one star, I'm not

sending you anything, but five star, I'll

:

01:03:46,762 --> 01:03:47,452

gladly do it.

:

01:03:47,601 --> 01:03:47,791

CB: We'll

:

01:03:47,791 --> 01:03:48,601

send you something, but you

:

01:03:48,601 --> 01:03:49,161

won't want it.

:

01:03:49,162 --> 01:03:51,092

Gary: Yeah, it'll, it'll be a

box and it won't smell good.

:

01:03:51,092 --> 01:03:51,652

I'll tell you that.

:

01:03:53,852 --> 01:03:54,132

All right.

:

01:03:54,162 --> 01:03:54,622

Awesome.

:

01:03:54,622 --> 01:03:55,992

Well, I'm Gary.

:

01:03:55,992 --> 01:03:57,442

Thanks so much for listening and go.

:

01:03:57,442 --> 01:03:57,842

Monarchs.

:

01:03:57,842 --> 01:03:58,612

CB: Hey, I'm CB.

:

01:03:58,642 --> 01:03:59,422

We appreciate you.

:

01:03:59,432 --> 01:04:00,392

Go Monarchs!

:

01:04:00,392 --> 01:04:02,671

Outro: Okay.
